  1. As in the title, has anyone tried CMBO on Mac OS X beta? How does it run? Personally I hesitate to pay USD29/HKD240 for a beta software. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 2. Congratulations, cheers! (Glass up) I suppose Matt's op involves in removing Borg cybernetic implants. One doesn't need to be in the BTS office as an employee? Oh, I am available for freelancing! BTS, can you hear me? *knock* *knock* Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 3. If that interview is not a hoax or something like that, it was an interesting read. I speak only personal experiences here: I taught myself C++ when I was in the college and used it in a project. After I went into the "Business World", I found I rarely have to chance to use C++, if you want to program windows, my bosses tell me to use Visual BASIC. About Java. It is a dangerous myth (yes it is) about its cross-platform or write-once-run-many capability. I read in 1997 from Computerworld that many Real Life stories about Java is not really a cross platform language. I would say after writing 2 years of Java it is a pretty good language to learn, write and maintain. You don't have to worry about those pesky pointers but it still have strong typing, strong modular structure. Don't get a illusion, you still get poor Java codes from poor programming practices. Another draw back is the client performance. I am not sure if the new Hot Spot for Clients in JDK 1.3 really shines. Colonel_Deadmarsh, C++ and Javascript are quite different animals. Javascript are mainly used in WWW clients or web servers (Netscape brand of servers to be precise.) It is generally marketed as Server-side Javascript (SSJS) or Livewire Pro. ASP -- hum, do you mean "Active Server Page"? It is just an API to MS IIS. You can use Java, VBScript, VB, Perl and now C#. I am not sure about C# but I suspect it is yet another can of worms under Microsoft brand. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 5. Thanks for your reviews, as usual, you have done an excellent job. Keep it going. I hope you can also review ASL-converted scenaioes some time. 6. Is there any reviews I can reference to about converted ASL scenarioes? Many I scenarioes I played are small, with very large maps -- which converts to larger possilbe tactics options. Some are very challenging. I think the ASL2CM site had a poll on the best "Human vs. AI scenario" but well I think I need a critics on this one. The only major gripe on the scenarioes is they come out faster than I can play them. Damn, where can find a time dialation device? Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 8. According to the book "U.S. Infantry Weapons of World War II" by Bruce N. Canfield, US soliders were issued with combat shotguns, e.g. Winchester Model 97, Model 12, Remington Model 11 and Model 31. According to the book (page 126), the production figures for 1943 was 2,607 riot guns, 60,896 for trench guns and 51,944 traning guns. They were used in both Pacific Threatre as well as as in the Western Front. Again according to the book, actually in WW1, German at that time reacted strongly against the use of this weapon, any american captured with such a weapon or even the ammunition were threatened to be executed for they claimed the user of such weapon violates the international rule of combat. Hope it helps. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. Expect to see "GriffinCheng76", "GriffinCheng(105)" or "GriffinChengA3E8" more should Forum problems occur again
  9. Hello, I live in Hong Kong and I think my cost of living is even higher than Australia. Normally, a US game costs HKD220-280 (convert to slightly less than USD40). So a game costs USD45 would be a tag higher than normal, not including the cost of shipping. Two things I think it really worth the price: 1. It is beyond doubt that this game is the best WW2 tactical game I play so far. 2. More important. It is so addictive so it saves you money from buying other games. 12. CAS is literally "out-of-control" in CM, they show up "when it is ready" and they have their excuse for not showing up at all (and they don't have to tell ya). Well even if they show up, they can miss, near miss, wreak havoc to opfor -- a "near-hit" of 2 500-pounders are good enough "scare" tank crew away from their AFV, of course, they can wreak havoc to your own troops too. Search in the "CM - Scenario" section to see my screenshot on how they wipe out over 60% of my troops in one shot. I remember a joke goes similiar like this: "When the Luffwaffe came, the Allies hid; When the RAF came, the German hid; When USAAF came, everybody hid!" In short -- better spend your money elsewhere. May the Il-2, Ju-87G, Hs-129, Fw-190F/G be better in CM2. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 16. Gunslinger, I think you should remove "MOD NOW READY FOR DOWNLOAD" from the news page, it was a little misleading but well, it is minor. Just tell us when it is ready. 18. I find Borg pretty boring, expecially after the movie "ST:First Contact". Well, I don't know why Borg likes to simulate human who are prone to stupidity, selfishness and greed as Scott Adams says. But well, cybernetics implants are cool, but I rather like those in Ghost in the Shell. BTW, I get the episode guides of B5 from Amazon and the Secuirty Manual too. Frankly, I have just watched 3 episodes randommly. I really like the CG battles and I am impressed by the idea of Vorlon biological warships which hides the scientist within its body and the scientist hears it sing. Cool! I know Scott Adams stars in an episode in Season 4. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 19. Humm, nice idea. CM Star Wars Mod! We already have stormtroppers, now we can have KT for AT-AT, what about those AT-ST, X-Wing and snowspeeder? *Gasp* What forum am I in now right now? 20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Eating while playing? no no no, grease and crumbs all over the screen and keyboard, tsk tsk tsk.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Ah, ya see I have a good comrade here. BTW, after a second thought, I feel strange that people have time to eat and / or drink when they play CM. I think we all sucked into CM. (Picking up the radio) CM Borg, come in, we have run into a TRA, repeat a TRA. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 21. "Lysol"? Is it an insectide? Sorry we don't have that in Hong Kong. Personally I hate to touch controls (including TV remote and mouse) when I feel my hands are salty. If I have to choose, a glass iced of Cola or Cream Soda is fine. Of couse I cannot have those when I am playing flight-sims. Both hands and feet are bz. Enjoy. 22. No, thank you. I don't eat before my home computer. You know, your food derbis attracts oragnic bugs to live inside or near to your computer. Not good. 23. Well, the tracer thing can also be found in the first chapter of the book "Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering" by Robert L. Shaw. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0870210599/o/qid=968232296/sr=8-2/ref=aps_sr_b_1_4/002-5934466-5321638 I am not sure if it is true but it sounds reasonable. BTW, only less than 10% of all WW2 US enlisted fighter pilots were qualified as "ace" for 5 or more confirmed kills. I remember a phrase that goes like this: "In air combat, there are only two: the fighter and the target". Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 24. Those hi-res skins are stunning. I just got MDMP-2 last nite and installed it on my PC! I fire up the Tutuorial and my jaws could not spring back up when I saw the new high-res Pz IV! It was too late to watch other vechicle and do the translations for my Mac. Keep it up people!. Grififn. P.S. Is it possible to add new 3D models like Starfleet Command? Is there anyone working on this direction? ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 25. With honor and pleasure, Steve. Ya know, normal citizens here in Hong Kong have no access to mail chops and stamp values here are normally small (hint!), I have to fill the entire upper right corner with stamps. OT. I am no stamp collectors. If your family like stamp collections, I think Brazil uses stamps made of plastic sticks other than paper in many other parts of the world. Griffin @ work place. P.S.
