1. BIG OOPS! BTS storms this thread! I can't believe it! I always think this is a private countdown party. Oh, Matt, close this one please. Thanks. Giffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?"
 2. YES! One more day to go... Thanks! BTW, I suppose Steve shouldn't post the update and just do the update right and right away! ( sue me ) Probably gonna lose 1 sleep or 2. Thank you very much. 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Doug Beman: Johnno, there are programs available on the internet that allow you to view Excel spreadsheets. You can't edit them and they probably aren't perfectly identical to Excel, but you can at least look at the spreadsheet. I don't have any links offhand, but a web search on something like "Excel viewer" should get you what you need. DjB

Yep, The Excel file viewer is directly from Microsoft web site. Try their MS Office section: http://office.microsoft.com/2000/downloaddetails/xlviewer.htm Or get Sun's StarOffice 5.2 if you want to mess the file around. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Johnno: Bestables Oh and by the way, thanks Beman for sending the file but I haven't got Excel and can't open it. I will try again to access it through Frontpage or another program but all I have tried so far is Wordpad.

Hey, I suggest you try out StarOffice 5.2 from Sun Microsystem. It can read Excel 97/2000 and it is FREE! Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?"
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Kitty: "Stopping power" is a widely misused and misunderstood term. The only way a bullet, regardless of caliber, can immediately incapacitate an assailaint is by piercing the central nervous system. Instead of making this into a huge post I'd suggest going to http://www.gunnery.net/hwfe.html for a good article on this subject. As for your second question, when you say "PPK" are you referring to the Walther PPK? The most obvious asset that this weapon possesses is it's small size which makes it easy to conceal. My father, who was a Superior Court Commissioner in L.A. County, used to carry one with him when he wasn't in the courtroom for just that reason. He could easily carry it in his pocket or the inside of his boot, etc. without drawing it attention. However when he WAS in the courtroom, he had a 6" Colt Python .357 under his desk. Kitty

Thanks for the answer. I came across Walter PPK issue from an article in a Taiwanese defense magazine. It is about the history and mechanism of this gun. It also talks a lot how this infamous gun related to James Bond. "6" Colt Python .357"? Cool! 6. Hey, time is not my primary concern, just make it right Afterall, the exercise of waiting my copies of CM to arrive this June makes me able to wait for everything. BTW, a few people of my profession are noctune workers, they like to work at night and in the dark. I remember a comics guy at UserFriendly who wear dark glasses during coding. Just keep up the hopes. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" 7. WBW, May I suggest you put them also on CMHQ or your Boots'n Tracks section as well? Thx in adv. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?"
 8. My recommendation would add "Chambois" and "South to Sword". They are both on CD and are also by WBW ( go figure ) I tried some mentioned and they are pretty good! 9. Allow me for my ignorance: Why did rockets in CMBO time peroid inherently inaccurate? I think the German ones were fin-stablized. I am not sure about the American ones. 10. I agree CC2 is good. I was playing CC1 and 2 from time to time. The greatest drawback is the scale of the CC series does not encourage descent tank-to-tank combat, let alone the die-hard tank pathfinding problems. I am not sure why I did not buy CC3. May be it is the CM demo. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. Expect to see "GriffinCheng76", "GriffinCheng(105)" or "GriffinChengA3E8" more should Forum problems occur again

 12. KMan, Please send it to: griffincheng@hotmail.com Let's see if my C/C++ (?) has gone rusty. Griffin.
quote:
Originally posted by KMan: Well, its not GNU (yet), but I'd be more than happy to share source code (just email me if you want the source). I don't know enough java to know if the same things are possible in java. Basically, what is needed is a way to find windows and pass mouse clicks and key strokes to them. If that can be done portably in java, then there is a chance to make a java version which works on both Mac and PC. -K

------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 13. I ll take this: 1. After both sides complete their moves, the movie is played showing the execution of moves for both sides. However, the "movie" only show 1 turn ( equiv to 60 sec.). The good thing about this utility is: you can view all the movies whole battle in 1 command. 2. For single player and hot-seat battle, it is kina hard since save is only possible in command mode. Autosave file is generated on the instance right before you hit the "Go" button. For PBEM, a movie file is generated for every move each side made. 3. As 2, for pbem, the recordings are automatic. 15. Thanks for the correction Mk. IV. Looks like I have been messing up w/ small arms lately. BTW, I read one mentioned breifly on stopping power and could anyone elaborated on it? OTOH, I read an article of PPK and its lack of stopping power. What is the use of such weapon? Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 16. Is Thompson M1A1 submg the same class as MP44? I suppose the book "German Automatic Weapons of World War II" by Robert Bruce should be a good read. 17. Oh Maximus, OT: I have teleported myself temp to "South of Sword" and whacked the Tommies hard. I killed all their AFVs but just loss 13 AFV on my side. In the 2nd game, one Lynx even managed to shoot down one plane who slatured my troops. BTT: Still eagerly waiting. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 18. Just back from the realm of Amn... I check this forum but seems that the TCP/IP patch is not out -- yet. If the schedule is met, we shall see the beta patch in 2 days? Right? Let's have our fingers croxxed. Cheers, Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 19. Thanks a million! Wow! That is a great job that you ve done. Viewing the whole movies is one of the most-requested-features by many people, including me, from the start. BTW, is it a GNU software? If it is, we may be able to rewrite this in java or whatever and view it in say Mac. Words here cannot express all my appreciations. 20. Usual spoiler warnings: : : : : : : : : : : Well, the downside of Jagatiger is the number of ammo it carries. But you will love this baby when she shoots a column of Allied tanks from the rear in the scenario "Magnificent Seven". BTW, in "South of Sword", you have a unit of Flak-88, I think it may be the only direct-fire weapon to deal with thouse Churchiles there. Oh people, this scenario is hugh, I used 3 hours last nite but just in turn 10. However, I managed to pin down most British armor at the exit to the village and make prey for my mortars! HeHe! So far the British has lost at least 5 Sherman V, 1 Firefly II, 2 Straut, and numerous HTs. I am not sure about their infantry loss though but I have pulled down at least 2 buildings with a lot of "dots" inside. I have lost 4 PzIVs and 1 STuG III. Looks like they are paper-thin even getting hit from range > 600m. And I can see the Churchills are rolling forward behind the trees -- but my 88 is operational in 5 turns. More to tell later if you are interested. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Lee: GriffinCheng: I highly recommend you try Thief. That is one excellent game. Starfleet Command II will be a lot of fun, also. It will have some of the combat options we didn't have time to put in the first one.

Thanks Lee. I almost finish Thief Gold and then -- Dues Ex arrives. BTW, I hate zombies! 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Captitalistdoginchina: Yes, the spreadsheet is a great accessory to CM, i printed out all the vehicle details for Axis, American and British armour/vehicles and put them in seperate binders. Whilst playing CM i can open the binder at the page of the vehicle and see the instant stats - it is also useful at the purchase screen to use as a reference. I always keep the binders close to my computer. Well worth the download - and make sure you add the pictures!! CDIC

Total OT: CDIC! Ah, I see you use office supplies for CM but not playing it with office machines??? It is a sin!!! BTW, can you spare me some binders? BTT: I think Churchills are the heaviest flamethrowers in the CMBO. It is wierd and thank goodness I have never go against this one so far! Anybody tried to ko'ed one using grenade? Looks like it is an exception to my rule "always engage Allied panzers > 500m" Will try South of Sword tonite. Griffin. ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. 23. OT: About FPS in office: I have came across a client with the boss, and his son, who was a BIG fan of Quake (yes the original) and he actually ordered a Linux (RedHat 4.1) server installed just for Quake server when we later found that WinNT does the job just right, especially for the official mod from Activision. After that we played DM when we had time -- during lunch, after 2000hrs, etc. Oh, did I tell you how cool proximity generade was? ( Better cut this short or somebody will complain... ) Griffin ------------------ "+" is just the beginning. The designer was the one for Talonsoft's Battleground series (sorry can't remember the name of that gentleman ). There is a quike take and an AAR on CGO. 25. Ha, looks like we can start a Greater China Area Chapter of CM. Just kidding, really BTW, 420, I have send u a mail about PBEM game yesterday. Please check. I think we better start our conversation over there. And BTW, I live in Peng Chau. 45-min trip is never enough even for the Tutorial. CDIC, excellent you are coming ot HKG again. Now I can beat you on the face. My notebook have a built-in 10-base-T port but I am not sure about the networking issue here -- I mean over your notebook. Actually I strongly suggest you use your lunch time to play a PBEM or two. It speeds things up. Personally, I am not very fond of Chinese tea, I like English tea (black tea favor to be exact). But I am not sure if we can find a good resturant for Long Jing (or in Cantonese Lung Chang), I have to dig out my resturant guides at home. Stay tuned. See ya all.
