  1. The flash film was great even for one who can barely make out the names of the most prominent cities. It gives you a good grasp of timings and such. Thanks for the link!
  2. I consider myself a veteran CM player but ran into a version of this problem the other night when trying out a scenario from the Stalingrad Pack. My frontoviki were sitting in brush and were at a range so as to just sit and shoot it out with the enemy. But alas, they just kept sneaking around. There was no better cover nearby so the waypoints were just to some other place in the same brush patch. I had strong numerical superiority but since everybody and their friends were just sneaking and not firing I got no where. The option I choose in the end was to order some poor bastards to advance forwards so that they would draw most of the fire. That cost me plenty of casualties but coupled with the timely arrival of some T-34 I carried the day. My feeling though is that had my frontoviki kept their nerve and just fired instead of sneaking I would have suffered far fewer casualties. Very annoying!
  3. Yes, that was how I suspected a bittorrent setup would work. We could essentially reduce the bandwidth requirements of the central server (cmmods right now) but not eliminate the need for it. Given that we have a few people with many mods, their machines on and their bittorrent client open we could achieve good speeds as well. This can also go into testing. I don't mind having both Grouper and a bittorrent client open at the same time. The catch is we need that central server. Who's up for that?
  4. Ah, you would learn a great deal about divisions if you join up on http://www.CMMC2.org . We are simulating a Soviet Army pitted against a German Panzer Corps. I can sure tell you that the divisional commanders have plenty to do.
  5. Hey, I know both of you for good chaps. Don't ruin this by getting angry at each other, you're more like to scare away people from this little project than persuading them to get along if you continue like this. Redwolf, how do you propose one get hold of the torrents? Don't we need a common place to go to anyway to get them? Soddball, as Redwolf has pointed out there is a multitude of software for sharing files and Grouper may not be the best or most long lived. Still I think it good that you have gotten something started. What means for sharing we end up with in the end is of lesser importance.
  6. The veterans reading this thread understand where big dukes arguments went off into left field. I did not feel like educating the fellow. </font>
  7. This thread was heating up for a while but I think the gents have calmed down pretty well now. Quite unneccesary to burst in and call people 'kid' and drag in a lot of politics as well. I was enjoying the arguments and stories in this thread, not the harsh words. BTW, I think it's a little weak to try and shoot down someones argument on the grounds that it's 'incorrect'. The whole point is to prove, so far as that is possible, ones stand point by presenting some sort of fact and drawing logical conlusions from it. Eg. I have never gotten points for stating that a mathematical theorem is 'obviously' true when the question was to prove it's validity on an exam. Doh!
  8. I'm not sure bittorrent is such a good idea with the small amount of downloads of the same file going on at the same time. We're not that large a community after all. And we would anyway need somewhere to store the torrents. Let's try out this Grouper thing and then in a few months we can evaluate it.
  9. Soddball, we don't seem to be online at the same time very much. In in GMT+1 (Sweden). I have now also shared some mods I have. Do we think all mod creators are happy so long as their names are associated with the mods files? It would be nice to get a standardized file name for all the mods too. Something with the name of the artist first, then the name of the modded thing, or the otherway round. We'll have to give it some time, it costs nothing to have it running anyway.
  10. That peace by Lieutenant Backsight Forethought is just awesome! I had never heard of it before but it should be required reading for all noobs and grogs alike. Great stuff. Thanks a bunch for that link! Edit: Here's a better link to "Defence of Duffer's Drift" http://www-cgsc.army.mil/carl/resources/csi/Swinton/Swinton.asp
  11. I might be interested. Not that I'm heavily into mods bu anything to further the CM cause is good stuff!
  12. The point I think Jason is trying to get to is not that guns can't be KO'ed without crew casualties. We know that they can already. The thing is that with the current abstraction you have less shells exploding right at the gun. The target area is much smaller than it would have been if the gun itself was hittable and thus rounds that would have stuck the gun now fly well past it. Quite simple really. Has nothing to do with fuses or type of shell though small calibers would benefit more from being able to hit the gun itself.
  13. Remember that the leader attributes are relative to the experience level of the leader. I think it a bit wrong to over load the high quality units with even better leaders and punish low quality with worse leaders. A vet HQ with +2 command has command like an elite HQ with no bonuses for example. Then your green HQ with no bonuses will be 4 "levels" below so to say. I would rather like to play around with differentiating a bit among the HQs so that you have one guy suited for fire support and another for stealth missions etc. Not one HQ with all the attributes. Just my two öre
  14. The setup, I agree whole heartedly. It's the main reason I never play the AI anymore. I just can't bare to spend so much time when the opponent only spends seconds on the same job. Vs. live opponents my worst behaviour that bothers me the most is when I lose patience with my AFVs and try yet another time to use speed in place of cover. It always ends in a lot of funeral pyres and me cursing myself for never taking the hint.
  15. I'm from Gothenburg but I wouldn't really count that as the south of Sweden, more like the west. (Sounds a lot like "best" doesn't it, west.)
  16. Hey, shuffle over to www.CMMC2.org if you haven't already. We are always in need of dedicated players. The battles may have started but they are very far from over. I if you like the operational aspect you don't want to miss this.
  17. I trust my opponents as well. But then should someone look it only ruins a fraction of the games. There is a setup phase after all and the likely OOB isn't too hard to guess at anyway. So I play along thinking I'm in the happy double blind world unless otherwise agreed. Enjoy!
  18. Usually them guns can be of use even as far as 500 to 1000 meters from the enemy. It all depends on the lay of the land. Then moving them around is no problem if you keep the enemy busy at the front while you reposition guns several hundred meters off. Otherwise I have succesfully used the trick to push the gun into LOS in some woods or trees where one side is safe and the other is 'hot' so to say. It's great fun to spring ATG ambushes on a defender who thinks that joy is reserved to himself.
  19. This thing has got great potential. Let's hope it gets used a lot when it's finished.
  20. Or you could join CMMC2. We have a reinforced regiment on my current map, not puny a battalion. The ammount of arty is also to my liking. Really good stuff, worth the waiting.
  21. IIRC Redwolfs conclusion was that you can look at this a little bit but don't do it thoroughly or you'll ruin alot of the CM experience . When you have played for a while you get the hang of it anyhow. Good things to know is that tree help alot less when there are no leaves on them (duh) and that foxholes and the like are easily spotted in the open. I've been bitten by the last one when area fire starts to pour in before I even see the oncoming enemy. This was in a snowstorm!! Maybe weather only affects the visibility of units and not foxholes? Well, don't dig to deep or you might ruin alot for all those who read this thread.
  22. Ah, finally we can try out that lovely foolish mechwarrior thingy in a more or less proper tactical environment. I always thought staying low was the number one rule in warfare where firearms rule but hey, maybe a tall walking machine with lots of fancy weapons is the way to go. I certainly hope they include the possibility to model them someway down the road. Looks like a good concept anyhow, I get the same kind of feeling that I got when I first heard of CM.
  23. Why not make the basic navigation interface a toggle thing plus configurable. IIRC there is an option in the TW games to either use the classic TW camera or a more classic RTS camera. Why not be able to switch between classic CM style, RTS and FPS style cameras all with configurable buttons. Configurable buttons I know is pretty easy to implement, the other part might be slightly more work but probably worth it. This way both old CM vets and new comers would be happy. It is a mystery to me why the CM games never got an options page where you could setup buttons, adjust graphics and sound etc etc.
  24. Smertniki, I saw your post over at the CMMC2 forum. The initial problems should be solved fast. I hope you join the glorious Red Army. Yair Iny, the battles can be daunting and you will have to adapt to it. A Battalion is about the smallest we play with. And don't be surprised if you find an entire battalion of 152 mm guns in support (Thats three spotters!). The training should prepare you well though. Good luck the both of you!
