  1. Okay fellows let's agree to disagree. Probably the best take on all of this is Stephen Jay Gould (paleontologist and baseball conissieur) His point, that Science, ie provable fact, and religion operate in two distinct spheres. You can't use science to prove or disprove religion, nor religious belief (essentially faith/grace) to prove or disprove science. SO everyone, please back of. No tautologies (or tauntologies here please. M. Bates, don't get in a huff. Whether "real" or not religion plays a major part in most people's life one way or another. To say that religion is stupid simply falls into the trap of "belief" ie you cannot prove or disprove faith. You may not accept the unsupported belief but as CavScout observed the tightly held, unsupported belief in a dictrine or non doctrine can be classified in some ways as a religion That being said let's wait to see if there is any further development in this war version of an urban legend or at least what the facts may be, or let it sink out of sight ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  2. Have 8 pbem's going. Process usually 1-3 games in AM before work [somehow still mange to feed dogs and get them outside -eventually] then after about 8-9pm can get back to CM. Ususally have full complement of turns, and often, if timing matches up can have several exchanges durng the evening. Midnight has been about it since I got the game. Often manage a few turns on a scenario or two while waiting. Check the forum and CMHQ from work and during evening. As was noted, rather this than watching Regis on "Millionaire"
  3. Pham/Bates You haven't been around all that long so you may not be aware that Matt quite some time ago disclosed that there was a financial arrangement with TGN, based on the number of hits. He has JOKED about this as well at other times. There never has been any attempt to disguise or hide that fact. Further your claims that he is in essence is using their work and stealing or is somehow sleazy what is "rightfully" theirs is legally incorrect and insulting. Also, that BTS's policy is being infirnged is also incorrect. What you quoted says that no one may sell a scenario, ie charge for the privlige of downloading. Who is paying are the advertisers, not for the scenario but acess to us, the people hitting his sight. Numerous people here "advertise" their sites, Rob1, Colin, PeterNZ etc. perhaps they have a financial interest in our accessing. Granted prob not, because their draw wouldn't be enough, but they could find hosting sites, that do pay, they just want to advertise though, just as with CMHQ. Remember what you are implying that the mod/sceanrio makers should get a share of the pie DOES violate the BTS restriction. Finally, is the need you felt to post this. The fact you started it off with essentially the phrase "I'll prob piss some people off" shows that you made a deliberate and calculated act to piss people off, ie start flaming. Of passing note is your claim that people get all bothered when one of the "hero's" is attacked, is insulting to us as a community. Some people seem to thrive on being anti everything, and creating conflict, this smacks of that. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86

  5. I guess why I have a visceral reaction to this is summed up in a recent "preview" which would be based on Hasbro's marketing material http://www.mpog.com/e32000/software/squadleader/ <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Squad Leader, from Microprose / Hasbro is a turn based Strategy game very similar to Warhammer 40K. It's based on Avalon Hill's game Advanced Squad Leader.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> So very shamelessly they are specifically tying it into AH's reputation as a reputable source of games. Of course "based on" is code for we will change anything we damn well please and applies to movies, tv etc You know history is going to take a bath when it says based on true events [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 09-15-2000).]
  6. I have been reading the Ambrose book on the building of the transcontinetal railroad: "Nothing Like it in the World" I was reading of the Chinese labor that built the Central Pacific, which reminded me of the opium dens of China and San Fransico, which reminded me that I am NOT getting any work done, just killing time, reading the forum and waiting w/ much of the same slack jaw, glassy eyed disinterest until I can get home to fire up (light up......coincidence?) CM. I keep checking CMHQ praying that something new has been posted, feelimg an empty drop in my stomach when I see, that no, Matt hasn't yet posted anything new in the last 1/2 hr. BTS has, as has been mentioned before done more to bring down the economic output of this nation than any other thing, well since opium. We constantly hear storiesof how our slavish devotion to our addiction and cravings has ruined relationships, sleep , health and who knows, lives. After all does Seanachai have anyother purpose than to compose odes to the Peng thread and get his PBEM's in? I think not. Does OB&G/Maximus, brooding in his lair have anything else to do? Does Tiger, electronic paintbrush in hand do anything except keep posting these tantalizing mods, we can never have?! Do I care? No. For me it is too late. My soul is lost and riven from any chance of redemption or salvation. So dear reader, if you are perchance new, and not yet hooked, then flee, flee, run as if the hounds of hell are pursuing you. Pause but a moment and you shall be sucked down into a phantasmagorical dream of Tigers, Panthers and Kangaroos, of 8 inch artillery shrieking down singing their death cry of doom.......for us it is too late, only the next fix will suffice. Go then, turn away, I am too weak, BTS posses my waking existence. Hearth and Home, and employment pale with the orgiastic shiver that courses thru my blood as the 'zook draws down at the encroaching menance, nothing compares w/ the release that consumes me as artillery smashes into the hovel, exploding in a expanding cloud of death, and that penultimate moment, that sine qua non, that orgasmic convulsion as the shell penetrates it's target, driving deeper into the bowels of it's victim displaying for all to see "frontal armor penetrated at weak point" YES, oh god YES! Then, I am at peace, floating in the clouds of nirvana, a peaceful lassitude suffusing my being. But as all things are transitory, the blood lust builds again and must be satisified. There is a darkness abroad in the land, and we are becoming it's oh too willing victims and converts. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by 109 Gustav: Tiger, will you be doing these Sherm mods for Macintosh too? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Gustav: It doesn't matter. I suspect most, if not all mods will be bmp's. With the MacMod and CM Modmaker utilities, there is no need for a separate Mac download. In fact the MadDog mods from CMHQ are now only .bmp's If you haven't got those utilities [available at CMHQ under 3rd party mods] GET THEM NOW!!! On my iMac I've installed them all, no more pc mod envy. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  8. What is not appreciated in the "it's only a name" arguement is that the name has power and a $ draw. Why would Hasboro pay money for the AH stable and why market a game under that title? Is ALL about markets. Marketing is not about quality, but quantity. A whole group of people (former SL and ASL players) are a potential market. The general game popultion that heard of AH or the reputation that SL and ASL created are potentials. People, marketing cares only about how to create hooks, to get people to buy products. Whether it is "true" to original is not their concern, it is about manipulation, and yes deception. Playing off nostalgia or a reputation. The question will be does the company care about what happens AFTER the sale? BTS does, Hasboro doesn't. What I hear are people sad about what could have been, sad that a part of their past has been coopted. But what is sweet is that frankly, what happened LED directly to Combat Mission, the game that we who played SL (and Panzerblitz, Panzerleader, Tobruk etc) dreamed itcould be. The past is past. I have no affection for the demise of a great era, but hey, I have CM in my hands now, and I ain't stopping. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by aikidorat: Or, you can use Graphic Converter....to open up a bmp that works, use the color picker to pick the purple/pink value, and then use those values to set the color.. ok, here they are: either: 100% magenta or: Hue Angle: 300 degrees Saturation: 100% Value: 100% <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Thanks for info Dave. Got around to playing w/ GC. The Saturation was at 97% for several Tiger versions. Cleared up right away. For other Mac users, if you do not have Graphic Converter, GET it. It's shareware and easily available. To get rid of those dots, open bmp w/ GC, use sampler/eyedropper icon to read the color, select the color and adjust the proper numbers per above. Then use paintbucket icon to change that portion (place over area and click) save and close. Viola. Reload into the Graphics w/ MacMod Or CM modmaker and there you are. Even I did it and that's saying alot. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86

  11. MB: Go to CMHQ, 3rd party mods, Madmatt has a "guide to mods" It steps you through and links to them I believe. For me I recc. MadDog Packs 1 & 2, the full Monty of Winter Camos (whether Stephen's or Dave's is personal) The Full Infantry winter camos, etc. There are some new Tiger mods, but for now I am running with Madmatt's Tiger in MDMP 2 as I had some little purple spots in road wheel areas on Desert Fox's and the Hi res (grey/green Tiger) But you can load and see how thay look for you. I didn't like the velvet grass and the hi res grass didn't have any noticible improvement so I have low res grass. The velvet texture terrains has some nice work that I individually selected. Such as Church, new roof tiles, bridge, ponds, wheat field etc It really has a MUCH better rocky ground tile MacMod allows you to compare the image of the new bmp to be converted w/ the resource in the current graphic. So I just load it up , skip through and select ones I want. Both are handy little buggers (MacMod and CM Mod Manager) Gunslingers are interesting (although a bit on the darker side, like a cloudy day feel. You may view it differntly) and I have an alternative set up w/ just his installed. Since they look very different I do not reccomend mixing them. So if I want to use them I just change name of the data folder. I have added the realistic flag start up screen, unit bars, command indicator , new flags as well. I have also put in battered Panther A and David Ol' Blood and Guts Maximus has just sent me a new version for the Panther G. He is sending it to Madmatt and posted a email request on the forum. Truth be told there probably is very little of the original graphics that I haven't replaced in some way. Some, several times!! I think it really enhances the game! ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86 [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 09-12-2000).]
  12. Divorce lawyer to the CM stars at your service For me it's get out pbem's 6:45-7:30 am. Play while she's goes to bed, so gives me 9pm-12 But ya got to make room. I keep emphasing that CM is what I do to fill otherwise dead time and that I won't use it to "avoid" her. So if there are things to do, I'll do them, but also make clear to her that this is something I do for me, as I do for her> ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  13. I am uncertain as to what you are referring. The basic mods, MDMP 1&2, the 3rd part stuff at CMHQ, or the gunslinger mods. I have an iMac DVD SE that I play on. I have loaded both MDMP's, all the Winter Camo (inf and vehicle) stuff and several panther variants, weathered allied tanks, and some selected terrains and textures from the velvet textures. That being said, I think they really enhance the game. You said you use the two widest views most often. You mean the go's eye views. At that level, mods won't matter. I usually play at 2-3. There you an really appreciate how much more they can do. Some are little tweaks. like the stained glass in the church, or the "battered" panther A, etc Also as mentioned, winter/snow changes the appearance if you have the winter camos. If snow is on the ground, then the inf all have winter uniforms, and the vehicles have new paint jobs. No snow, then it's regular. MacMod and the CMMM converter are great and make handling the bmp's a snap. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  14. Has anyone any suggestions for handling/ sizing this on a Mac. I can print it okay since it shows as Quicktime, but unsure what settings. Normal is too big, half size too small Thanks JD ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86

  18. don't think there is a jagdpanther though. I haven't seen one but I'd like to. The MDMP-1 texture kind of "stands out" in winter scenarios LOL ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  19. Also when approaching a hill crest that you want to go hull down over watch out for indiscriminative "hunt" commands if other units, say infantry are visible. Nothing more frustrating than to plan on sneaking up the enemy's backside, only to have your tank first (in current LOS) target that squad acroos the valley then advance w/ the turrent facing the wrong direction as you come into LOS of your intended target, only to learn how much faster their turrents turn than yours!! You may just have to issue a move command and eyeball the hull down position ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86 [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 09-07-2000).]
  20. I previously posted a thread about a limitation I ran into re a 500m limit on indirect fire. Well fianlly figured out problem, I was doing it wrong (Doh!) but in doing so I did find out an alternative way to utilize it as well. You can initiate indirect w/ mortars by the standard way, selecting the mortar and (if target is in LOS of HQ it fires) but also if you have double clicked (right click? for PC's?) which select all C&C squads, targeting the HQ unit also targets the mortars as well BUT there is a 500m limitation for max range, even if mortars range exceeds that.Caveat/warning, the HQ unit also fires and this may reveal his position. Not sure why the limitation( it's most likely a product of the range of the HQ's weapons, but inconsistent as to mortars use. ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86
  21. here's also a bit of information i have just learned . FromTopic: Was I assimilated? posted 09-05-2000 06:58 PM <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>opinion is divided / the jury is out on the question whether the CM Borg can assimilate old time veteran CM-followers who have actually been here, and assimilated in a natural, self-assimilating way, way before the Borg entered the CM community hive. 24. More specifically the third party mods section. There is a Document, Madmatt's guide to Mods. He steps through the various ones available and suggests the installation order (incl. the MadDog Mods 1&2 ) must gets, but they are in a different section, Maddog mods Where's me gavel? ------------------ "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" -- King Henry VI, Part II, Act 4, sc.2, l.86 [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 09-07-2000).]
  25. Mr Meeks, as noted above was simply extending an invitation to Mr Croda who seemed to exlemplify the spirit of the cesspool. He is one of the few ever to be extended an honor of being recruited. Sorry if Meeks gave the wrong impression, we do try to keep him under control, but then again he has several personas [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 09-06-2000).]
