  1. I'll second that. You do a good job. Patrick
  2. At www.maccentral.com there is a news report that should at least clarify the situation from Apple's side. All best Patrick Apple doesn't slam the door on OS 9 ... yet by Jim Dalrymple, jdalrymple@maccentral.com August 16, 2002 6:50 pm ET While Mac OS 9 isn't officially dead for customers, Apple does see the day when computers shipped to customers will be Mac OS X only. In fact, when Apple ships Mac OS X 10.2 next week, customers will buy a three-disk set -- none of which will be a Mac OS 9 bootable CD. Many people in the creative pro market and in education still run their machines using Apple's Classic operating system. The Jaguar software retail package that Apple will ship next week includes a Mac OS X 10.2 system install, a second install CD containing printer drivers and applications, and a third disk, which contains the developer tools. For the first time, Apple will not include a bootable Mac OS 9 disk. "We are not including a full Mac OS 9 CD in the Jaguar software update for the simple reason that an overwhelming majority of customers that will be buying the upgrade already have an OS 9 System Folder," said Ken Bereskin, Apple's Mac OS X product manager. Apple will be posting information to their Web site in the next few days enabling customers running Mac OS 8.6 or under, or that no longer have their Mac OS 9 CD, to get a copy of OS 9. Under the Mac OS up-to-date fulfillment program, with proof of purchase of Jaguar, customers can purchase Mac OS 9 for $19.95. Apple's computers still come loaded with Mac OS 9, but the only way to fix the system if you break it or to reinstall it is to use an included restore CD. With Jaguar and the new machines, you will still be able to boot into OS 9 if you so desire. "We ship all of our systems, including the recently introduced dual Power Mac G4s, with Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 preinstalled on the hard drive. Users can open the Startup Disk System preference, switch back to Mac OS 9 and restart if they choose," said Bereskin. It won't be long, however, until Apple won't be giving customers the option to even get a copy of Mac OS 9. Of course, when a few more major applications like Quark and some audio applications make their way to Mac OS X, most customers won't feel the need to run Classic at all. "Looking forward, there will be a day where we won't invest in Mac OS 9 development -- we envision a day when computers will be OS X only, but that day isn't today," said Bereskin.
  3. Checked out ZipIt 2.1 but that won't solve the problem. That's an OSX shareware and won't be of any use for any of my PBEM opponents since they're mostly using PC's and it's their file that is getting only partially loaded onto the .mac.com server from what I suspect. My Stuffit Deluxe 6.5 reads the file as correct and upon opening the file is empty so that possibly indicates the zipped file was not fully uploaded to beging with? I had no problem when I was on a local server using Outlook Express but only after I switched to .mac.com that these empty zipped files started appearing and screwing up my PBEM games. All best Patrick
  4. Slappy Thanks maybe zipit will work instead of Stuffit. All best Patrick
  5. Thanks, very reasonable advice. I suspect that it is the .mac.com service rather than my opponent's. It's happened on 4 separate occasion with 4 opponnents. All of them go through the same process of 1. resend the orginal file. 2. re-zip the original text file and resend. 3. re-play turn, zip and re-send. I'm using Stuffit Deluxe which can open and compress zip and .bin files and it's never given me problems before. It reads my opponent's zip file as uncorrupt and opens up an empty file. From what it seems to me is that the .mac server isn't uploading the data stream completely. If any other mac user out there has similar experiences then at least I know it's not just my imagination! All best Patrick
  6. Hi thanks for the reply. The problem is though that the .mac.com service seems to scamble even zipped .txt files. It's finicky in that a PBEM game is going well and then let's say file #64 for some arcane reason won't be fully downloadable. My opponent will rezip the file or sometimes replay the turn , zip anew and resend and also copy the .txt file within the email but more often than not the turn doesn't come out in full zipped or unzipped. Unzipping the file produces an empty folder and nothing for the game engine to run on. I've even sent a report/query to the Apple support discussion page and no one seemd to have an answer.
  7. Any other Mac user using Apple's .mac.com service? I've noticed since using their online webmail that I'm getting PBEM files that aren't fully uploaded and of course on d/loading the file is empty and I have to ask my opponents to replay and send the file back again. Merely clicking resend of the original mail and attachment just repeats the sending of the empty file. Anyone else experiencing the same frustrating problem? All best Patrick
  8. HI Just saw your post and if I can chip in. I'm using a beige 233 G3 desktop and had 6MB's of VRAM & 512 MB of RAM with a 4GB HD. when I started playing CM. I upgraded my system with a Radeon for MAC PCI card with 32MB and a 9GB HD installed in the 2nd bay (SCCI). No problems with my CPU running the game even when I didn't have the Radeon but it's a brand new world with the video card. The CPU concentrates on processing the game file while the video does the graphics . Get the Radeon as it is more versatile than the GeForce if you use your computer for doing graphics work as it'll speed up the processing of Photoshop/Director files and does a great job with CM. If it's only for gaming than the GF is better. Upgrading the HD was simple as you just plug in the HD with a ribbon cable to the interior scci plug in your computer. If you go for the cheaper ide HD upgrade you have to remove the 2GB HD and figure out how to save your files in the process. At smalldog.com you can get a 500mhz G3 for $199 and a 500 G4 for $250 (?) these are ZIF upgrade CPU's while a 80GB HD (IDE) will run you about $80. All best Patrick
  9. HI, This is related to the PBEM files don't load on the map. My question is why do the files get corrupted in the first place? I'm also using a Mac and it's usually text files that won't load. Most times it's resolved when the player replays his turn and sends it back but currently my opponent is sending me zipped files and those also are corrupted. Is it his computer that are corrupting the files to begin with, if so why? Or is it the process of uploading and / or downloading files on the internet that corrupts it? It happens often enough that it can frustrate the hell out of anyone. All best Patrick
  10. I have the same problem too and yes I know the file is corrupted but does anyone have any idea why the files get corrupted. Are the files corrupted on up loading or downloading? what and how to avoid files from getting corrupted. I'm also using a mac. Large files are corrupted if sent as text but I'm also seeing my opponent's zipped files corrupted. So does that mean his txt files are corrupted prior to his zipping them? For example the zip file shows a size of 2.2mb's but on d/l it comes out to be a 1.4mb zip file and on unzipping is less than a mb in size. Is it his computer that corupts the file? All best Patrick
  11. You should tyake a look at Tac Ops 3.0 it's exactly what you're requesting. The only problem with it is the lack of graphics. It's the equivalent of playing on a 2 D map with unit symbols. Other than that it's a modern version of CMBO with terrain factors, morale etc.] Patrick
  12. Dirtweasel Thanks for the additional info. Will do some tests on how reinforcements appear.. All best Patrick
  13. MARCUS, Are you still awake? You must not have had enough beers at work to put you asleep! I found out that reinforcements only show up after a night turn. It's been raining for the past 10 days here so I'm not in much of a mood to go to the G Point. I may have to build an ark soon if I do decide to venture out for a beer. Cheers & beers Patrick
  14. Hi When it comes to operations are reinforcements supposed show up at the start of each new barttle segment of the operation or is there a possibility that the reinforcements maynot show up as expected? I've done a search and can't find anything on this subject. What's the rule on this? All best Patrick
  15. Hey if you're still into sending the JagdTiger mods I'd like to get both of them. Please send to: patricklucero@mac.com Thanks Patrick
  16. Very good point and sensible. I think we've all had defensive battles where our squad mortar's were useless due to weather or terrain and having these unit specific TRP's would be plausible but only for defending units. All best Patrick
  17. I think the company doing the conversion gets a percentage of the sales not outright much like Aspyr or Westlake does when they do a PC to Mac conversion of a game. The software this company created can port to any system PC to Mac OS 9 to OS X or OS 9 to PC or to OS X. I read it a onth or 2 ago on the MacCentral .com site. All best Patrick
  18. I'd get the OS X version if BTS ported CMBB for it. If I recall there's a company that just developed a program to convert games from PC code to Max OS 9 and OS X in a fraction of the time of a standard conversion process. I think that might be a possibility but I believe the company would also get the distributor's license for any games they convert. I doubt that BTS would go for that. Patrick
  19. Fionn, I've updated my profile with my current email address so when it's my turn to battle you can find my contact easily. Patrick
  20. Fionn A 2000 point defender limit is fine. I would prefer to keep it on the minimum level as I've got work that get's in the way. I can do one turn per day. Will give you my password at the end of the battle. When it's my turn for a match let me know about the weather, night or day, conditions you prefer and who is to be on attack and defense. All best Patrick
  21. Fionn, Yes I'm interested in a PBEM game. Got the message from Tools4fools (thanks Marcus). This will be a serious match and I'll learn from the battle any which way it goes. Attack, short 75 rules, and will send the 3 random generated maps when you're available. More than happy to give a turn by turn AAR. I would prefer to limit the attack to 1,500 points, combined arms, only and max 25 turns on a small map to medium map. I've no preferrence to Allied or Axis, attack or defend. All best Patrick
  22. The specs for the dual processor G4's only use a single video card in the AGP slot. That would either be the Ge Force 4MX or Radeon 7500 card that you order the computer with. I would doubt that you would see too much of a difference with a dual since CM itself isn't coded for dual processing computer's. That's what I think at least. All best Patrick
  23. A marine sniper I met said that they have depleted uranium rounds for the .50 mg and their sniper round as well as AP sabot rounds the bulet that actually hits the target is a 7.62 round once the sabot is discarded. Anyone out there to confirm? Cheers Patrick
  24. Yo Terry, Well I was skeptical about the idea first, but you sold me on this jeep / kubelwagon courier service. That would be very funny to see. I can imagine player's being conditioned to cower in fear or jump for joy whenever they see a jeep arrive in the middle of a battle.(ala Pavlov's dog) "Oh no, more Jumbo's on the way. Time to bug out!" Variable VL's would also be a nice thing to have if that could also be totally random and if possible player chosen (2-3 alternate sets of VL's) When you finish your next scenario please send me a copy. Chinese Cracker's is a very lively battle. I'm working on a couple myself with Marco my scenario design partner. One is an operation and another a city battle attacking into Milan. If there was a Stalingrad in the Italian campaign this battle would make a good simulation. Cheer's Patrick
  25. The Archer - but then again no one in their right mind would want to use it if they had to. In real life they should have shot the tank designer!
