  1. I think the padlock is just fine. Clearly different. At 1024x768 the font is fine for me on a 15" monitor. I agree about the color difference being almost indistinguishable for read and unread. Looks great and lots of great work done, many thanks.
  2. I would revert back to the original setup to start with. As was stated above I would stay away from hi res grass, and go with lo res vehicles given the small amount of vram an iMac has. I have also noticed that I get similar problems after my Mac has been asleep and woken up. I suspect something gets a trifle scrambled in the process of going to sleep and then returning the memory state to running again.
  3. um, you might wish to post over in the tech forum. I'm sorry that I can't help further
  4. Scenario size (meaning number of units and associated orders), your processor speed and amount of memory allocated to the program all have an effect. No autosave cannot be shut off and has no (ok very little) effect on the amount of time needed to process a turn. So yes different scenarios take different amounts of time.
  5. Panther, side shot, 50 yds, M8 75mm Howitzer. Opponent was flabbergasted. Panther was trying to keep up with turret rotation.
  6. Thanks Madmatt. It was just a suggestion. Nice work. things look great.
  7. Welcome to the board, my aplogies for your baptism by fire. Thankyou for being so open about yourself and what you do. Sorry that someone reacted so adversely to your job, an area that does not reflect who you are or what you believe in. You had an excellent suggestion. I truly wish it were possible. If you look at your CMBO CD which is happily a Mac/Win (for me as I have both and use both at work) combo it is pretty full. As you know if CM2 is Barbarossa to Berlin and is indeed Barbarossa and onward there are a lot of German units that have to be added and a truly stupendous number of Russian units. Without compression I suspect they will have a hard time getting it onto one disk. Welcome to the board and thanks for the thread. Not all of our dogs bite.
  8. He emailed the wrong one to you. It is easy to do, and will likely happen a few more times until you get the naming convention worked out.
  9. If you can't find it I have it and can email it to you.
  10. Matthew_Ridgeway Welcome aboard, glad to have you with us. In regards to the above responses, all we would appreciate is you doing a little research on what has come before and if you have a nugget that would be in addition to the past record, please bring it up. Although we have talked it out amongst ourselves (and some of us have the scars), if you have something new to add we would be happy to discuss. After all we are in the umpteenth go around on the machine gun controversy Anyway, doing a little research allows you to learn a bit about some of us, what has transpired, and where we are expecting to go. Anyway welcome and enjoy yourself. And no not all of our dogs bite! [ 04-09-2001: Message edited by: kmead ]
  11. Only number 756 because I was a lurker for six months, I could have done much better. Ok how about date or number of your order? I don't honestly remember when I posted my order on the net, but it was right after the second redo of the website in July or maybe August or so of 99. I do have my Panther in a nice frame above mycomputer. Newbie, oh yes thats rich.... [ 04-09-2001: Message edited by: kmead ]
  12. Um, M Hofbauer, did somebody do something really bad to you today? pretty uncalled for don't you think for a FREE SERVICE? Come on, choke back your gall and apologize. Geez.
  13. I would also appreciate further patching or even a complete integration of all of the CM Barbarossa to Berlin (CM2) improvements. I would be willing to wait until after CMBB is released even . Yeah CMBO is not perfect, no one has ever acused it of being perfect. I don't expect it to be perfect, I'm not even sure I want it to be perfect (though it might be nice). We have already been the beneficiaries of many patches, which is more than I can say for 99% of the software I have bought. I still play regularly and its still fun. We can either enjoy the cup whcih is nearly full or we can bemoan the lack of the last bit that fills it. I intend to enjoy it. Eventually there will be something better, hopefully it will be CMBB and then CMBS (Burning Sands). If not it will be from some other purveyer. I can continue to take solace in the thing I do have. Nice to see some interesting threads again, it has been a bit stale of late. Thanks
  14. I frequent a few other forums on some of the other subjects I am interested in. The VWVortex forum (http://forums.vwvortex.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Golf+IV+|AMP|+Jetta+IV&number=4&DaysPrune=10&LastLogin= ) is one of those that seems to have chosen some nice ways of customizing the forum suing similar software. One of the nice things are the little folder icons at the top just right of center which allow you to jump back to the upper levels of the forum after posting or if you don't really care for the thread you are in. When you wish to post a reply to a thread, the read window (previous posts ) is much larger and its easier to read more of the relevant posts you wish to respond to. They are also a WHITE forum, but I for one do not mind it as white is a strong contrast and for me, its easy to read. I really like the graemlins, and the instant UBB code is excellent to have immediate access to. I can now format my responses so they can be a bit more readable if not understandable . Anyway, just my two cents. Thanks to you and the rest of the crew for all the hard work on getting us back up and running. Withdrawal was starting to really set in.
  15. Compare the versions of drivers for your graphics cards and other system drivers DirectX and DLLs. Also look at how much Ram you each have. Although they are the same model system, they have not had the same owners doing the same upgrades to them, look for whats different that could be the problem. Good luck
  16. I recently saw this for the first time this weekend after my Mac had gone to sleep several times with CM, IE, MSOutlook all running in unison. When a new PBEM turn came and I started up CM, it had all kinds or garbage, bad characters, parts of CM interface windows and stuff all over the place. Quitting CM and starting it back up again cured the problem. It happened more than once so now I just kill CM until I need it since it loads so quickly.
  17. Steve, the offer X-00 has put forth sounds like a great opportunity, beat down his door getting there! Regardless of whether or not what you learn from the professionals makes it into the current or even future iterations of CM (in the near future) it seems like a worthwhile way to spend some of your already overwrought time.
  18. Yes. There have been several old threads on this subject. Some of the graphic oddities that end up occurring have had quite a few comments.
  19. I will continue to play CMBO as I really enjoy the theatre of operations. The Russian front will be interesting, I really like the later Soviet equipment. I am looking forward to the new functions in the game. I do worry that I will need ot upgrade my computer to really enjoy it, so I may not play the new one as much as I have CMBO unless I can still play nice little one evening or less quick battles.
  20. I don't think a MG should be able to suppress a nearby squad, which was my point although not clearly stated. It is in effect easier to lay down longer range suppressing fire than it is to try and hit several nearby targets that are going from cover to cover in alternating leap frog movements. You don't move in the line our abstracted digital soldiers are showing, (I apologize in advance for the the following insufficient explanation which in present company is likely entirely unneeded) instead soldier A moves from one bit of cover to the next. Soldier B now moves forward in the same fashion but he is twenty yards away to the side, soldier C lays on suppressing covering fire. The further they are apart (laterally) the more difficult it is to keep track of which one is moving and having to resite the weapon on the constantly switching targets. This is hard to do and takes time by which time the next target to one side is moving and somebody is dumping suppressive fire upon you. The closer they are, the less effective a machine gun is likely to be when out of context with the combined arms that its a part of. In effect supporting the way the game works and what was found in the scenario that started this thread. Ok so this is my .02 more.
  21. This would be nice and could actually be done (this doesn't require dynamic lighting) it would just be a momentary phase change in the way the game is running (for two seconds it is "daytime" and then it would be back to night. However, beyond the eye candy what do you think it would gain you in game play? In the two seconds you wouldn't be likely to be able to see much that you couldn't already see and you couldn't direct orders against targets that are again out of LOS. Interesting feature but not of much use. It would be more like the sound contacts that are already in the game. Think about the last time you were in a thunderstorm, were you able to really discern and identify something that you didn't already know was there? How about when you were driving, could you really see more that was useful information or were your eyes/mind so shocked and overburdened that they saw was more disortion than real? Ultimately out of fairness (due to the fact that we can see the movie as many times as we like) the things you see should be exactly like the phantom sound contacts that already exist and just as misleading.   22. I don't wish to get too bound up in this but I would like to speak of my very limited experience with machine guns. I had the wonderful summer opportunity (twenty years ago this coming May) to enjoy a summer camp trip to beautiful Fort Knox, Kentucky all expenses paid by the US taxpayer. While I was there I had the enjoyable opportunity to fire a number of weapons on ranges of which the M60 bipod mounted light machine gun (a true misnomer if you have ever hefted one around for any distance) was one. I didn't for long, just a couple of 500 round cans of ammo, but it is something I remember to this day. All we had to do is run up to an emplacement, hunker down, get the weapon ready and then fire on a variety of very holey 55gal drums in groups at different ranges and angles from the emplacement. The range had a number of hillocks and very little (surviving) vegetation with a larger hill some 1500 meters distant. First it is very difficult to hit a target, in fact once the trigger is squeezed it is well nigh unto impossible for the gunner (me) to even see the target until I let off on the trigger and can see the last of my bullets impacting the drums and hitting the hill downrange. After a few tries we are then required to change to another target at a different angle to the emplacement. No you do not pick up the gun and skootch the muzzle over, the emplacement has a narrow embrasure that requires that I crab my body several feet sideways (to lift the weapon you would likely need to kneel which would bring you up above the parapet and expose you to fire, which by the way angers DIs no end...) to acquire the new target then you would have to work with your teammate to arrange the ammo feed and begin laying on more fire. Eventually you do get into a rhythm and eventually you start hitting the drums with some of the bullets with alot of help from your team mate whacking you to gain your attention for redirects. A machine gun is an incredibly violent machine, the mass of the machine running (firing) and the noise is incredible. I have no notion of how many of my 1000 shells hit the targets, but it was not nearly what I could do with my M16A1. It was interesting shooting at the targets 500 to 1000 meters away as you could fire and see the tracers in flight and then impacting down range. I then got to do the same thing over from the loaders perspective. Admittedly I was not very trained, nor am I built on the physical scale that a machine gunner needs to be (at the time I was 130lbs/5'6", still 5'6" but now 162lbs thanks honey) so I can't say that what I experienced is indicative of what real results would be. What I can say, is its difficult to hit a specific thing with a machine gun, and if the thing is jinking from side to side to avoid being hit and alternating with another advancer at some lateral distance the chance of being able to hit either one diminishes immensely the closer to the machine gun they get. A HMG mount will do better, being able to move smoothly from side to side with little effort, but the problem remains that a close infantry assault would be a hard thing to break with a machine gun as I perceive the problem relative to my limited experience. My .02, thanks;
  23. If your graphics card has a video as some do (ATI Radeon being one example) you could save the video to your VCR and then reload it to make a Quicktime or Realplayer file to look at. It will show only what you looked at when you initially played it. This is a kludgy and work intensive workaround but it will work. Could you just save the file just before hitting Go and send him the same file for his computer to process and then watch it together and talk on the phone as it is playing out? I know this will produce somewhat different results, but it would allow you to choose the one you perceive to be the better result You would then save the file before giving orders and then email the "correct file" to the other person after making your moves for your units, then repeat the playback procedure. Just an idea.
  24. Sturmgeschutz III, with later Saukopf mantlet for the gun. You can tell its a III by the number of roadwheels (6), the shape of the roadwheels, the shape of the drive sprocket and I believe IIIs had the last piece of add on armor (schurtzen) stepped down, thats about all I have to say about that. 25. Sorry, it has been a while since I have looked at the Gold Demo. I also found the Gold Demo to check my answer and found I was in error, my apologies. I still have the Beta Demo (mac version) on my computer. What a hoot to crank that up! I think I played Last Defence so many times and how to win either side so many ways it is imprinted in my mind forever. Sorry for the misinfo.
