  1. Yes if you have a DV there is little you can upgrade. Main system RAM, the hard drive, and thats it. The newer iMacs are effectively a closed system as the video circuitry is mounted t the motherboard, there is no slot to install anything into. Now if you had one of the old G3 PCI desktops (beige or blue) you could install on of the PCI based Radeon 32 Mb cards... (and sometime soon the NVidia Gforce2s). You are in luck in that you do at least have a video out to run a larger monitor if you want : ) Sorry for the news, but don't despair as your iMac will serve you well for quite a while.
  2. Just out of curiousity, how much is RAM where you live? Just so you know, your name is no indication of your current locale, so kindly tone down your sarcasm. I was just rying to be helpful with a litltle info I know. Have a nice evening. Alright, so I should have looked at his signature line, my stupidity. I do have one question, why are your prices so high? [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 02-01-2001).] [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 02-01-2001).]
  3. Kindly send it to my email in my profile. Many thanks, I look forward to the opportunity. KMead
  4. Okay so I was wrong, the lowest price was $43 plus shipping
  5. I have to chime in here, the iMac is clearly a starter computer that has many limitations. The thing is it is an excellent computer and very reliable. My kids have been using our rev B iMac for over two years every day, installing their own software and so on. It hasn't broken, nor crashed very often and has not required system reinstalls. I am a designer and among my many duties is software and hardware testing and specification for my department. I have 11 hot NT systems, several plebian Win95 corp spec machines, 3 iMacs and 14 G4s. Of all these machines the iMacs (running 20" Moby CRT) have been the most reliable and trouble free. My G4 with a 22 CInema Display (its great to be King) has been great but it is much newer so I wouldn't expect anything less. The NTs need constant tinkering and maintenance and the software problems we have are huge. I can't wait for OSX and Maya to arrive so I can dump the NTs once and for all. Don't sell these little machines short, are they the be all or end all of computing, no. Tehy will play most of the available Mac games adequately including Driver and the recently released Rogue Spear. They are not great gaming machines, but they are more than adequate for 90% of the tasks average users need a computer for. [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 02-01-2001).]
  6. As an FYI, a revision A or B 233 Imac can accomodate a iMac GameWizard 3DFX Voodoo II w/ 8MB Vram in the mezzanine slot. The card you need is in limited production and can be found at: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC.taf?_process=additionaloptions&Type=Acceleration&Model=61 the price today is 84.95. This is a fairly old card and the company that originally developed it is now gone. If you go to the Tech forum there are several references to useres some of whom have had success with it. The revB iMac is adequate for most any scenario, you will want to upgrde the memory if it has not already been done. A 128 meg chip is @$80. Look at Ramseeker.com for the best prices. It is kind of a tedious install but done in 20 miniutes. Good luck. Karl Mead
  7. WOW! What a great job on the mods. I will have to finally download and use some mods. I have been liiking forward to battling in the desert since BTS stated their intent to for CM 3. Cruising the sands in my M3 Honey reenacting the exploits of Robert Crisp from his book Sands of Fire. Looking forward to the downloads. Thank god for broadband!
  8. I fall in the 1 and 2 camp. I do truly appreciate fine graphics. I spent innumerable hours in my wasted youth detailing and painting my Tamiya, Monogram and other models in 1/35-1/32 scale and later 1/72. My limitation re graphics so far has been that my home machines are not the most state of the art. I have chosen to use Macs at home so my fmaily can easily use them. I am happy that I have as my sons have both been computer users since they were age three. I can't justify a full on killer gaming machine so I can play one killer app. There are too many other things I know are more important. to my family and it would be a selfish extravagance on my part.. So I choose games on how much fun I can have within the limitations of my hardware ( in this case a Rev B Imac and a 400 Mhz iMac DV). I think that our hosts have done a remarkable job of creating a product that was released for Win/Mac simultaneously, provides remarkable accuracy and play with graphics that can be adjusted (moded) to better meet the needs of those who can afford them. In terms of their balancing of time/efforts they have already shown judgement in their current offering. Hopefully they will be able to better serve the desires of group 2 who currently lack their PantherIIs and E100s. Yes they could do a better job for group 3, and now that there are more and more mainstream applications that require serious graphics muscle, 32Mb (or more) on graphics cards will be the norm soon and not the exception (meaning a game driven geek or like me at work a graphics driven profession). I would bet that given the release time frame, CM2 Barbarossa and Beyond will add more features to better resolve battles, will have an amazing number of new vehicles modelled and the battles will be bigger over larger fields. The last two items will likely cause the graphics improvements to be modest given that many of us will likely still have the computers we have today, and all of us will be caterwaulling over the time BTS is taking to release the next fix for our habit! Karl Mead By the way, a nicegroup of posts.
  9. Could you make available the actual jpegs for download? and scan them at fairly high resolution? I am sure several of us can give you some IDs. Thanks Karl Mead karlmead@hotmail.com
  10. First wargame: In the sandbox (literally) at age 2 using lead W Britians and SAE troops and handmade Panther tanks with my Dad in 1963 First board wargame: Blitzkrieg and later Panzerblitz in 1972? First computer wargame: I think it was called Ambush, a top down map with Xs and Os for your troops @ 1984 [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 01-23-2001).]
  11. Gustav, if you are behind a firewall generally iTools will not work as the firewall sees it as an outside intrusion and won't let it mount.
  12. Generally, they (the AI) will pop smoke and reverse of their own volition when confronted with opposition that the AI perceives as a real threat. If the Stuarts can see the King then to some degree the King can see the Stuarts. What may have happened is that the King's AI became unable to choose a target that had precedence over any other and given the KT slow turret travese speed was unable to actually acuire a target after a while. I have rarely seen tankers in the game suffer faintness of heart to the point of being shocked. Shocked usually occurs when a crew member has become a casualty, usually the commander. When this happens the tank becomes severely limited in its ability to perceive threats and acquire targets. Another thing you will see happen when a vehicle becomes immobilized or has a gun hit, is the crew often abandon the vehicle if they percieve too great a threat. Especially when immobilized. The difference between tanks and infantry is that an infantry man can break and run or cower deeply into a hole in the ground, I've rarely seen a hole big enough to cower a King Tiger in : ) Tankers also have a misplaced sense of security (especially Sherman crews ) in the armor around them. You also have to think about the type of tank and the crew's experience. Wittman and his crew in the course of getting all those kills on the eastern front had to have suffered a huge number of ricochets from their behemoth. IMHO kmead
  13. And to think I thought of buying a game that even looked like that! I mean after all, what else could I play on a Mac...
  14. I'm sorry, no it was not a tcp/ip game. I neglected to note the full title of the thread in my haste to note a minor bug. Sorry
  15. I had several units surrender in a quick battle with the latest build (24). two of them accepted the order to move and another just stayed in place. I have a file if one is wanted.
  16. You will find that there have been others with this problem related to the ATI drivers and Open GL. You can acquire the latest version (1.2.1)at version tracker, or you can download it as part of the Cro Mag Rally Demo, and lastly you can buy the latest issue of MacAddict whose CD has that and several other demos. I could email the installer to you, it is @4Mb in size. Let me know; KMead [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 01-01-2001).]
  17. Doh! double post but hey....bumpity bump [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 12-31-2000).]
  18. Ordered mine in Aug 1999 received it July of 2000. Man, what delivery : ) : ) I was an early preorder, even have the Panther to prove it! The great staff at BTS deliver as quick as the postal service can (in my case I moved just when the time came for shipment of 1.0 and they got it to me). [This message has been edited by kmead (edited 12-28-2000).]
  19. As an FYI you can get the new drivers, as well as several fine demos for new games on the latest MacAddict CD. The new drivers are part of the Cro Mag demo on the CD. Unless you have a fast internet, dnldg the 43Mb of the demo could be tedious or impossible (my cable modem makes fast work of it though! : )
  20. When I was perusing the History Channel site today I noted the following factoid: Today is the anniversary of his death. As many of you know he died a few weeks after a traffic accident between a US Army truck and his limousine. A truly ironic ending for a man who truly wished to fall on the battlefield. Do yourself a favor, don't read the bio on the History Channel site as it is terribly written and poorly organized. http://www.generalpatton.org/ Will lead you to the Patton Museum website at Fort Knox Kentucky. A great place to visit, as long as you're not attending basic training during the height of the summer.... Sorry his full name was George Smith Patton Jr.. 21. Deanco: Another approach to the problem is stop below the crest such that your vehicle is invisible from your opponents side. Then use other units to 'spot' the intended victim, and once they appear in the ambush area use the hunt command to have your vehicle move into hulldown position. This has worked very well for me especially with light skinned vehicles such as Shermans, Pz IV and armored cars. Keep in mind that any hits you receive will likely be kill shots as turrets are crowded spaces. I believe there was a thread a couple of days ago about hulldown turret hits. Good luck and nice site. kmead
  22. This is merely my opinion, based on my reactions to what others have written. No flame intended nor sought. As I recall, these threads have gotten attention from our intrepid hosts. They are trying to improve this area in the last few patches. In addition I suspect that CM2 will not abstract armor to the degree CM1 does. I realize that you all play more ( and certainly write more) than do I so these relatively small issues are particularly galling for you. Keep in mind how nearly perfect all of the thngs you have ever created in your life are. Not to be an apologist, but I think that their continuing efforts to make a very good (towards great) simulation of an intensely complex situation are alot more than I have ever seen ANY other game/sim publisher deliver. Witness the recent Panzer patch that took a year or more to deliver on a game that was heralded as the greatest (Germans do...). The game is perfectly playable, both sides suffer the same disadvantages and advantages dependent on your tactics. So yes all the units in this game are part of a dance of death, thats the point as I recall. As a constant reader and sometimes writer, the plaintive notes some people write come across as strident whines. Please look at your approach, and try to adjust your fire... JMO kmead
