1. A few people seem to question the benefit of having this option in the game. Several of the reasons against this option seem to focus on the fear of "gamey" issues such as green artillery spotters with crack infantry, etc. Shouldn't this be avoided by selecting your e-mail opponents wisely? You can tell where many people stand on these issues by reading the gamey threads. My thought is what would it hurt by having it? Just because it is there doesn't mean that you have to use it. It would not hurt anyone, as it would not have to be used. I don't personally use the editor due to time constraints. Most of my CM usage revolves around QB's versus the AI. I would personally love to have this option. Not being a programmer, I don't know what it would take to activate the option, but I know that when I click on the regular or veteran option, the other options are already there, just greyed out. I think activating it would allow people such as myself to develop tactics utilizing mixed quality troop types and would add to the variety in the game. With these points in mind, it seems to be a very reasonable thing to ask for. ------------------ CrapGame
2. I was living on Long Island at the time the Mattituck museum left. It was an amazing site seeing some of those tanks being loaded on to the transport trucks and getting on to the road. That was a great place. ------------------ CrapGame
3. Kwazydog has apparently been downloading pictures for the models already, so perhaps he can enlighten us with this one. ------------------ CrapGame
4. I think that for what a PzIV costs, I'm usually better off with a Hetzer and some form of support weapon. The Hetzer is fairly survivable, and even though its ammo supply is limited, it usually lives long enough to shoot all its shells (unlike my PzIV's, which usually die shortly after being spotted). The combination of HE shells from the Hetzer and whatever support weapon(s) you choose with the remaining points (mortar, mg team(s), shreck, sharpshooter, etc.) usually provide more total firepower for a longer period than the PzIV does. Just a thought. ------------------ CrapGame
5. Banshee, You're getting that huge Panther? How much is that going to run you? ------------------ CrapGame
6. Tom, Those are simply amazing. I don't even know what to say. They must run off lawnmower engines or something. I am extremely jealous. ------------------ CrapGame
7. ck, I'd love to see anything that you can post. I was looking at those links, and saw the 1/6 scale Tiger. Whew, my eyes lit up when I saw that. How cool would that be to put a servo-controlled paintball gun in the turret, and play wargames in the back yard! Too bad it was $8-Grand! ------------------ CrapGame
8. CK, Thanks a bunch for the links. And yes, you are now on my wife's hit list. ------------------ CrapGame
9. I just got back from Toys R Us, and I picked up the Panther and a couple of infantrymen to 'ride on the back' as it sits on my monitor at home. The Panther is a few inches longer than the Sherman, even though the boxes say they are both 1/18 scale. I did see the 1/6 Stuart, and I would buy it in an instant if it was R/C, even considering the divorce it would certainly entail. Can anyone tell me if they make any R/C tanks in 1/6 scale, or similar? Thanks ------------------ CrapGame
10. Claymore, Keep it coming! I think it is very disturbing how accurate a visual I get from reading these things. Perhaps that is a sign that I have been playing too much?? ------------------ CrapGame
11. Df, In CM, the Priests are direct fire only. That means ou must take extreme care in eliminating enemy AT assets before exposing them! ------------------ CrapGame
12. Pascal - Please edit out the name of the scenario so others can still use it in double-blind games. That's why I didn't use its name ------------------ CrapGame
13. I do agree. Last night I was playing a scenario with a few Tigers versus an assortment of Allied armor and personnel, and the TacAI kept rotating the Turrets of my nice Hull-down Tigers to their rears to attack some rifle squads that were 200m away! I wanted to kill them as a number of Fireflies, some Cromwells and what appeared to be a Hellcat kept coming from their front and flanks! - So Annoying to watch your elite Tiger get taken out by a Cromwell that walked up to within 50m unmolested, and then put some AP into the rear of the turret. ------------------ CrapGame
14. ahaus, Funny - you're probably right, the crew did seem to be a little too relaxed as they were mowing down those tommies. Oktoberfest is coming to an end soon, isn't it? Schugger, I had a thought about that, too, but the AI had purchased the forces for both sides. I think it wasted all the Brit's points on Air Support which didn't arrive. I did hear it circling around, though. It gave me a ton of artillery - a 75mm spotter, a 105mm spotter, a 75mm infantry gun and 2 81mm mortars. The end result was 110 casualties for the Brits, of which only around 20 were credited to my StuGIII and the 75mm AT gun. My 2 platoons of fallschirms didn't fire a shot before the Brits surrendered. Did seem like a lot of firepower for a 1000 pt qb. ------------------ CrapGame
15. I was playing a QB this morning, and the AI was pushing its squads of Tommies towards one of the VL's when I moved one of my StuGIII's out of its hiding place. It blasted a few troops, then exploded from a "Top Hit, Weak Point". After scanning the map through multiple viewings of the film (at least 5 times), I have determined that the kill was done by a 2" mortar. There were no PIAT's, all troops were properly identified, the Brit Armor (1 firefly, 2 shermans) were already dead, and no troops were even close to near enough to assault the StuGIII. I have no difficulty in believing that artillery of some size (say 75mm at least) could cause this death to an AFV to happen, but a 2" mortar? I figured the mortar would just give some big headaches to the crew of the StuG at worst, so I had it target the visible HQ units as a priority over the mortar. Serves me right, I suppose. Just my $.02 ------------------ CrapGame
16. Check out the "Articles" section of CMHQ here: http://combathq.thegamers.net/ and look at the tactics articles on some of the other sites related to CM such as this one: http://www.combat-mission.com/ and go to tactics. ------------------ CrapGame
17. Titan, You said:
quote:
My opponent is a very good player in his own right, and i understand this to be more of a joke than a gamey tactic to win on his part...

The fact that he is a very good player makes me think that this fits the definition of a "gamey" tactic. Just my $.02 ------------------ CrapGame
18. Berli is right. Let them pick their own targets at their own time. I have had an elite one take out an Arty Observer at 575m (open flat terrain), and believe me, they button up tanks real fast, when you let them pick their own targets. I hated them at first, but they are very valuable assets when you employ them correctly. ------------------ CrapGame
19. Hey Sparky, Please edit your post to delete the reference to the name of the scenario you were playing - some people haven't played that one yet, and it ruins the ability to use it as a double blind PBEM in the future for them. It is a fun scenario, though, isn't it! ------------------ CrapGame
20. Dervulf - Very funny. My wife hates CM as well, whenever she gets pissed off, I often hear the "MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!" yell coming from her direction. ------------------ CrapGame
21. Popper - You're absolutely right. I didn't hunt for those jumbos, they stumbled through some heavy smoke right into the path of my Hummel. Watching the super-slow reloading time of a Hummel race against the fast turret of a Sherman caused me to curse loudly and often at the crew of that thing, that's for sure. Thank god the 2 jumbos didn't appear at the same time, or old Mr. Hummel would have had a really bad day... ------------------ CrapGame
22. He might not be - I've had a Hummel make short work of two jumbo Shermans in one game. Those shape charges can be deadly (if you can get them to hit). ------------------ CrapGame
23. This has been discussed several times previously. It will be ready when Steve says it is ready to go and not before. Please lock this up before flames start flying! ------------------ CrapGame
24. My old PC was a Pentium 200 w/ 80Mb RAM and a 16Mb Voodoo3 2000. My only complaint was processing turns. This machine ran every scenario fairly well, (except the large ones) and you can buy an equivalent used PC at any used place for about 200 bucks (17 inch monitor included) with another 60 for a new Voodoo at WalMart. ------------------ CrapGame
25. In terms of bang for the buck on defense a well-positioned Hetzer is a tough nut to crack. On offense, the US 75mm (M8?)Motor Carriage gives a lot of Antipersonnel power for very, very low cost. ------------------ CrapGame
