1. I looked up "The Miracle of Dunkirk" over at Amazon, and if the one you have is written by Walter Lord, I found the right one (this is one is a paperback from 1998, on order). thanks! shags
 2. I am writing a short story set during the seaborne evacuation of Dunkirk and am looking for any references to make the story more authentic, i.e., books, sites, articles, etc. with personal accounts, interviews with some of those involved with the evacuation, preferably accounts from civilians. Any help is welcome and much appreciated. shags
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by pkpowers: I've removed TOAW1 off my hard drive. To me it was way too generic of a game to cover WW2 well enough. What I have replaced it with are the Panzer Campaigns 1+2 by HPS. They cover WW2 the best right now in the realm of operational stuff. Also, HPS' Tigers on the Prowl and Panthers in the Shadows are excellent WW2 tactical games. Graphics are a bit dated, but I'm after realism, not eye-candy. [This message has been edited by pkpowers (edited 10-02-2000).]

The only problem I had with the ToP games (never played Panthers in the Shadows) was that they seemed to me to sacrifice a good bit of the fun also, in exchange for the realism. Personally, I never felt at all that the TOAWs were too generic to cover WW2--I've played (probably by now) hundreds of PBEM games and have enjoyed every one of them, most of them WW2. The game seems to me to capture the operational feel that I envision one must understand (a medium between operational know-how and intuition) as a real world general. For me, I love it, though I haven't picked up the HPS 1+2 Campaign games you're speaking of--I need to do that shags
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Silesian-jaeger: Since we are talking about other wargames, has anyone played "The Operational Art of War" (part #1)? I'm wondering how the WWII scenarios are. I have only played Part II, the modern game.

Personally, I like the first TOAW more then the second, but that's just a personal preference for WW2 (though I like to toss nukes as much as the next guy in TOAW2 ) The Century of Warfare pack from TS is a nice, all-in-one option if you haven't already picked up every iteration of TOAW (like myself--those marketing bastards over at TS are certainly cumbersome ) shags

I have also found that PBEMs help to sharpen things up. The AI is a good start but it cannot compare with another person.

I hope I got the quote thing right up above (my boot status is shining through, I'm sure PBEM is about all I play, though I have been practicing some stuff against the AI. Once I get into a game, though, I rarely play the AI. Nothing like talking smack or eatin' crow (and it just loses its allure when you're talkin' it to the AI shags
 6. I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, but since I'm relatively new to this here game (still recovering from the operational warfare of TOAW , would any of you be so kind as to direct me to any web sites that cover CM tactics (or tactics without CM ? I know very little about infantry tactics, etc., at this level, so any help would be most assuredly appreciated. 7. I love this game! 'Tis a shame that not every game has such a mileau (gotta be spelled wrong, of that I'm sure) of die hard gamers, or maybe not. Wargaming is a special genre, that's for sure. Ya'll should take it out on one another on the virtual field, where this here rivalry means something! I would be more than willing to moderate. shags "I am the effect."--Nietzche (I need to do the signature thang
 8. I believe the magazines stick with the product, as it ships, not with patches and mods and such. Seems like a good policy to me, and compared to a lot of what's out there, the graphics in CM are toward the middle of the scale. Damn, I sound like a spokesman for PC Gamer
 9. If they pander to companies who place ads to them, then why the good review of CM or any of the others (recent HPS games come to mind). I don't have the issue near at hand, but it seems like their review of CM was pretty much right on the money, overall (don't quote--I better dig that issue up before the flak starts flyin' my direction shags
 10. yeah, let's do some, since it's all I have installed, PBEM-wise, right now...shall I fire it up, or would you care to do the honors? shags
 11. Ted--only thing I have on the puter right now is CM, I'm having to play it from the wife's computer (blah shags
 12. I've finally gotten around to playing CM some, and it's certainly great, and that is, of course, why I'm here now. Just wanted to say "howdy" to any and all and a fond "you *** is mine" to the ole father-in-law--where's my turn!
