  1. I have done indepth testing with CMBO today with the latest 21.88 drivers that are "leaked". I found that if i go into the game in software mode, I do not have any errors, while if I have the hardware acceleration on, bamm...transparency issues. I have played around and everything indicates to me a driver issue. To those who have it working, please email rune@ameritech.net what card, what version driver and any setting changes in XP. rune
  2. to answer: I did test windows xp, and tested CM on it. However, the drivers were NOT an issue until nvidia changed them when it got closer to release time. It is impossible for any software company to keep up with various drivers, changing quite litterally every week. Nvidia has been made aware of the problem, and the problem IS on their side. To expect BTS to remove all the white text out of the game, then nvidia fix it is an unrealistic demand and a waste of time. A directx call is a directx call, and CM was written to the MS spec. I am constantly testing new "beta" drivers leaked by Nvidia. When i get one that fixes the problem, will let you know. Rune
  3. Some one bring a laptop and Rob, try to make it if you can. Trust me, it will be worth it. Rune
  4. I will be there. Is there a dress code for the place? Rune
  5. Crank, You are correct, so who will all be there? Rune
  6. Are we still on? I will be there, but might be a little late. Game at 3:30 PM, then assessment by me. Should be done by 6, then travel to schaumburg. Where is this place exactly? Rune
  7. Well, you ignored me about the 28th, as I am doing an assessment on a National Candidate for Referee [soccer]. So, I won't be sure if I can make it, depends on what time the game ends and what time the assessment is. Assuming I can make it, I will be wearing a hockey jersey and a USS Enterprise baseball cap. Rune
  8. While i prefer a Saturday or Friday evening, A sunday day would work. Since on the topic opf wargames, have been looking for a wargame club that wants an old 66 mhz pc and quite a few old wargames. Anyone know of a club that would use them? rune
  9. Depending on the day, count me in. Saturdays are bad for the next 2 weeks, as I am refereeing soccer games. I tried this before but couldn't get enough interest. Hopefully we can do it this time Someone have a laptop to bring? Rune
  10. Brian, A dose of reality may help. He demolished my arguement? All I state is that in CMBO terms, it would have rare usage. That two, count them, two pictures is not common usage. Especially where one of the photos is from the Korean war. More proof is needed. Umm...how was that defeated? Selective use? RARE it was used. Rare, seldom, I never said it wasn't used. You and banned boy read into that. Try reading what I post and not into it. I also found a veteran's account where the tripod WAS used at Arnhem. However, since I find this entire thread a waste of time, I won't bother with it anymore. Bottom line: Two pictures and one account does not make for common usage. Again, come up with support as everyone has stated. Oh yeah, if I was purposely trying to misquote or make a false point, why would I post the link? Rune PS, I notice YOU didn't post a link. How does a weapon in New Guinea impact Europe anyway? Here is the site i quoted from: http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/harrytext2.htm [ 10-05-2001: Message edited by: rune ]
  11. Oh, here is another one that I have. Obviously everyone else understood I have more sites to post except Mulga Bill, who reads into things that aren't there. http://www.britishairborne.org/infantry.html Note for British Airborne, a crew of two, one with the gun and one with ammo. Umm...who is carrying the tripod? Here is one of the quotes from a veteran that I supposedly don't have. The Battery moved to Antoing in Belgium where it carried out its secondary role protecting the 48th Division moving up, by Bren guns mounted on tripods being used against aircraft. We saw plenty of action during this period as enemy aircraft were over in large numbers every day. Whether the Bren gun was very effective as an A/A gun was very doubtful. I only saw one aircraft shot down and every gunner in the Battery was convinced his was the gun that scored the hit. Altho this was early war at Dunkirk. Rune
  12. And I have a problem with someone who has to hide behind other names while being banned. In your feeble mind, you say I am against the tripod, NO where did I say that. I only stated two pictures is not proof. I also stated I have other documentation from veterans, which I will post later. They all say the same thing, they were rarely used. I never said they were never used, again, something YOU read into it. I want more proof for common use. Numbers, frequency of use, standards of use, etc. Use in Korea or Pacific proves NOTHING for the time period covered in CMBO. rune
  13. Lets see what the experts say. From the: http://www.awm.gov.au/korea/weapons/bren/bren.htm States fired from the hip or the bipod., How about this one: http://www.wwiitechpubs.com/barrack/inf-uk/inf-uk-lmg-bren/inf-uk-lmg-bren-br.html I quote:The Bren’s curved box magazine can hold 30 rounds, but usually packed only 28 in order to avoid straining the magazine spring. One version used a 100-round drum magazine for anti-aircraft purposes. Bren operators usually fired from the hip or rested the gun on the built-in bipod, and only rarely set up the tripod. British soldiers were cautioned to fire only single rounds at first contact, to hide the machine gun’s presence from the enemy and to conserve ammo. They also learned to loose bursts of four or five rounds. Expert operators could coax five box magazines a minute from the weapon. Or how about this one: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Comet/6498/t2000ww2britishsmallarms.html I have more where the people who USED them state they seldom used the tripod. Rune
  14. Bull... I can show you a photo of an T28 in Europe, and show you another 5 years later in the US. According to what you say, that means there were lots of them and used commonly. There were in fact 2 T28s [American] and neither was used. I have 15 pictures of KV-1s in German Markings, wide spread use? Nope. About 60 all told. The photos could have been taken DUE to the rarity of the equipment. Just photos proves nothing. Come up with numbers, usage reports, amounts made, common practice etc, then argue your case. I got things added into CMBB using PROOF, not obscure photos that mean nothing. Rune
  15. Phil, As a follow-up, I tried again this morning to confrim for you. I had no problem with the XP and ME workstations no matter who hosted. Rune
  16. Phil, Not a lot of people have tested the game with an Operating System not released yet. However, I played last night an XP to an ME workstation and did not have a problem playing tcp/ip. Rune
  17. Yep, a good point was brought up, what was the accuracy at 3 km? From what I have read, not too good. Also, how many times did you run the test? Once? Twice? 100 times? Rune
  18. it is a 320mm incidenary rocket. Nasty Nasty things..... Rune
  19. I just installed the final version [release version] of Windows XP and installed CMBO on it. I was playing with no errors with a tnt2 card using the default XP Drivers. I also tested with an nvidia card earlier on and had CMBO run but with the text problem which went away with the 21.81 drivers. Is anything over-clocked? Rune
  20. :a creaking noise is once again heard from within the cesspool...no, Mace is not having a go at his rubber sheep again, but the secret trap door opens to once again reveal one of the elders....Rune appears carrying a scroll...the rooms gasps...once again rune holds the scroll of NDA. He approaches the podium and calls forth David Aitken and Von Shrad. Rune speaks: "Bauhaus get those worthless gimps up here on the double...use any means necessary." :The mere threat hurries the two along to the podium: As he being to beat the hapless two with the scroll of NDA, he yells at them: "You toothless, worthless gits. Do not use the name of Krazydog in vain...the boy has got to do the 3D models BEFORE he starts on the skins. Even a SSN can see that. You two should be hung and quartered, but even that would be too good for the likes of you. Let the BTS crew work, I have seen the future, and there is more hellfire then even Berli can stand. Be patient, or I will insist you be locked in a room of Australians and Finns debating endlessly who had the better troops." :With a few more slaps to their heads with the scroll of NDA, Rune sends them to the deepest part of the cesspool to ponder their doubts. With another creak, he disappears down the trap door and a lock is heard slamming shut... Rune [ 09-19-2001: Message edited by: rune ]
  21. Actually I didn't say it, the British did in their WO report. Wire envy perhaps? Don't make me talk about Finnish wire... Rune
  22. Look at the following: WO 291/455 Cutting of wire obstacles by HE. A single 25-pdr shell will cut a gap of about 10 ´ 1½ feet. A single gun or a battery of 25-pdrs ranged accurately on the same point will require about 1000 shells to cut a gap through a wire obstacle. One cut per foot is considered sufficient for an effective gap. Bangalore torpedoes cut gaps of 19ft in British wire, 15ft in German wire. So, get 4 25 lb spotters, have them laucnh about 250 shells each, and IF they are accurate, in about 20 minutes you can cut the wire. Rune
  23. Comming to a server near you...as soon as I find who wants to host them...the lost rune files. These are scenarios that were used in tourneys/or never released. Most are historical, and include: Battle in the Shadow [Overloon] Kapelsche Veer and since I am at work, I don't remember the rest. hehehehehe I will have to remoce two scenarios out, as they are still being used, but the rest are ready for release. Who wants them? Rune [ 09-19-2001: Message edited by: rune ]
  24. The British thought the MG 42 was better then the Bren, proof? WO 291/473 Performance of bullet weapons. On the matter of relative rate-of-fire of the Bren and MG-42, this paper says "...the advantages of the German gun over the Bren are due almost entirely to the belt feed rather than to the cyclic rate." A trial was conducted to find out, for closely-spaced standing targets, whether "traversing fire" – traversing the gun over an arc without aiming at individual targets – was superior to "service bursts", that is, firing short aimed bursts at individual targets, with the Bren gun. The results tabulated here show the expected number of casualties per 30 seconds' firing: Range (yds) Spacing in feet Service bursts Traversing fire 100 4 9 16 100 8 5 8 200 4 8 12 200 8 5 7 Another trial concerned the relative accuracy of the Bren fired from the hip using ball and tracer ammunition. Firing at fixed targets at 35 yds and moving targets at 17 yds, an improvement averaging 24% was found firing tracer rather than ball. Yet another trial involved comparing the Sten gun against the service pistol. At a range averaging 10 yards, the following average results were obtained on targets exposed for an average of 5 seconds and moving across the line of fire at 10 feet per second: Type of fire Hits per shot Hits per engagement Shots per engagement Sten from the hip 0.12 1.86 16 Pistol from the hip 0.08 0.48 5 Pistol, aimed 0.14 0.71 5 Here is another interesting one: WO 291/476 Comparison of rifle, Bren and Sten. This paper investigates four theories about small-arms effectiveness: Rifle and Bren shooting is generally so poor that the real accuracy of these weapons is never used; Rifles and Brens are rarely used at long ranges except by snipers; For semi-skilled troops, automatic weapons are disproportionately better than single shot; The advantage of automatic over single-shot is increased by battle conditions. Trials conducted at the School of Infantry confirm 1, 2 and 4. "It is admitted that all the above trials have been on a small scale and that the sample of men was probably not representative of the Infantry as a whole; but it is expected that the trends shown will hold for all except possibly the first class shot." The Bren and Sten were fired at 100, 200 and 300 yards, and the equivalent 90% zones, in inches, calculated at 25 yards. Single shot Automatic Bren Sten Bren Sten 100 yds 2.4 4.3 3.8 4.6 200 yds 2.0 5.2 4.4 5.0 300 yds 2.0 5.4 3.8 5.6 Mean 2.2 5.0 4.1 5.0 Shooting was done lying with weapon rested; an improvised backsight was fitted to the Sten for shooting at 300 yards. An extra trial to confirm the lethality of Sten bullets at 300 yards was performed with ¾" deal targets covered in two thicknesses of webbing. All hits were "throughs". Another set of trials, each of 20 rounds, was shot on a 30 yard range, and the following results obtained. It was noted that "the average firer has a higher overall chance of hitting an enemy at 200 yards with a Sten than with a rifle." Note that on the above, the British feel 1,2 and 4 were correct. Just some interesting documentation... Rune
  25. Excellent job as always. Well done! Rune
