Help: how shoot with mortars?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

When I select a mortar (infantry or vehicle) I don't know who order open fire to any position. When I select fire they shoot with their hand guns, when I select throw smoke they approach and throw it with their hands; I want to know who fire and throw smoke with the mortar.

Thanks.

Targeting directly with a deployed mortar also relies on the mortar having line of sight, to a certain extent. You can Target *just* out of LOS with a mortar, to the other side of a crest or hedge or whatever.

Actual indirect fire requires a spotter with LOS to the target and the authority to call it in - Forward Observers certainly, but some armies devolve this down to low levels (in CMSF, US squad leaders can call in indirect fire, whereas Syrian squad leaders can not).

Hi,

It always says my mechanised mortars are "not positioned" when I go to "available artillery".  There is no option to "deploy weapon".  Is there some other order I need to give them?

Which units in particular mate? - I know back in the day, there was an issue with these being unable to fire using the indirect fire artillery dialogue, it might have crept back with the patch.  A savegame will also be handy.

Have you tried "Open Up" first?  I haven't ever used mech mortars, but some other mechanized weapon systems require that order before they can fire.

Mortars have a minimum range as well as a maximum. If you're too close to the target they won't fire. Also, you don't have access to all the options when directly ordering them to fire. When you go through a forward observer, even if he's standing next to the mortar team, you get the ability to select target type, ammo type, duration, rate of fire, etc.

"Deploy Weapon" is the top left button in the "S" tab of action buttons when you select a unit. So let's say you have a mortar section in a vehicle of some kind. You have to dismount them, then click on the white dot at the end of the movement and select S/Deploy Weapon.  Depending on the type of mortar, it should be ready to fire the next turn or the one after. Then it will show as available in the fire support tab.

Hi, thanks for all the responses.  I'm a dunce!  I had to dismount them first.  I thought they were mobile vehicle mortars and could shoot straight from the vehicle.  Thanks again for all the help!  :)
