dumrox
This think showed up recently in the yard of a crane company. I pass it every day on my way to and home from work. I wondered what model it was and finally pulled the truck over to take a few quick pics with my cell phone. Anybody know exactly what this thing is? Thanks, Kevin
Wicky
Dare you to paint it green during the night ;-) http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m55-8.htm http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m55-8-pics.htm http://www.militarymuseum.org/M55.html Or it could be a rare M53 155mm SP Howitzer http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m53.htm
JonS
based on the barrel I'd say 155. My god that's an ugly paint scheme.
dumrox
Thanks for the reply. Given the barrel length, I think the M53 is more likely. Painting it green is tempting. That blue and black camo scheme's pretty unsightly. I'd like to hotwire it and go for some armor plated joyriding.
Michael Emrys
based on the barrel I'd say 155. I'd agree. My god that's an ugly paint scheme. I think it's rather pretty. Can't think of a situation though where it would confer much camouflage benefit...unless you were planning to fire it from under water or something. JonS
I think it's rather pretty. Pretty? I think it's eye-jarringly ugly. I'd much rather look at this or this
Sgt Joch
its a strange camo scheme, more something you would find on a ship:
Michael Emrys
Pretty? I think it's eye-jarringly ugly. I'd much rather look at this or this You must be color blind. The alternative is of course that you are a dangerous psychotic who should be locked up for your own good and that of the community. One of those statements is definately true, the other is only probably true. It remains demonstably true, however, that the blue scheme in the first post is eye-jarringly ugly (and in NO way comparable to HMS Belfast  )

Flanker15
It might be a good colour scheme if it were parked on a glacia.

John Kettler
dumrox, Given the numerous AFV family members I've seen blown to pieces in live fire ordnance tests and demos, I marvel there are any left to exhibit--however ghastly and ridiculous the paint scheme! It's an M53 with extended barrel. 155mm, not the 8 inch of an M55. Here's a Nam shot of one in Marine service. http://www.12thmarineartilleryregimentassociation.org/P-18-A.jpg http://www.12thmarineartilleryregimentassociation.org/USMC-LRA-M53155SPHowitzer.html When these were phased out they were replaced with the 175mm M107 SP, mounting the U.S. version of the ultra long range German K 18 im Morser Lafette.
