ATR rifles

Recommended Posts

I did some tests with these babies against infantry in trenches and foxholes.

I thought it was common practise for the russians to drive enemyinfantry out of their holes with ATR fire.

Should be very effective against sandbagged positions, only they dont fire at infantry in CMBB.

Is this intentional or am I doing something wrong?

Anti-tank rifles don't fire against infantry in the open (some technical reason why they couldn't do it, I believe), but I believe they WILL supress infantry in buildings. This feature came late in the Beta process after much criticism of ATRs not targetting infantry.

Well, having an ATR area fire would be about like ordering a sniper to area fire. They have a limited amount of highly specialized ammo and a relatively slow RoF. They aren't going to just waste ammo. To be fair, in the example I cited, my ATR had a height advantage on the enemy foxhole.

I don't think that their ammo is that limited. Their ROF is 3-5 shots/turn, and they have (usually) 50 or 75 shots. I make that a minimum of 10 minutes of constant firing, a more likely figure of 15 minutes and a maximum of 25 minutes.

Sharpshooters only have 10 shots. ATR ammo is definitely specialised, no argument there, but who's going to say to themselves "Hell! An enemy machine gun nest is chewing up my buddies! I'd open fire on them with my 50 rounds of ATR, but I might need the ammo for later, so maybe I'll just let them die." smile.gif

You see my point, I'm sure.

Have you looked at what an ATR team carries?! It ain't no five or six stripper clips I can tell you! At that slow ROF, your ATR teams can shoot longer than most of your squads!!

don't know about you guys...but if I was manning a machine gun I would fear a ATR more than small arms if I had sandbags and such. ATR shoot very high velocity rounds which would have an easier time going through sand bags than your standard rifle rounds.

Well, yes, but I'm not disputing that they should fire at infantry targets, I'm just disputing their usefulness in the area fire role. Unless you score a lucky penetration on cover, it really wouldn't be any more effective than one guy with A K98 plinking away at an area. Not very "suppresive."

Once many years back while playing Advanced Squad Leader, I killed a 10-3 German leader with my Russian ATR while he was moving in the open. You should have heard my opponent squeel like a little girl who ........................Well, you just really had to be there.

Not when the target in question is a building in which an enemy lurks whom I can't quite see. Correct me but I think it's not the same.

They aren't going to just waste ammo.
It's not a waste when there are no tanks on the whole field and I'm surrounded by tons of enemy!!! Trust me, comrade, we'd better use these rounds now, or it won't matter if a tank DOES stop by later. Even if you just give the enemy a sore knee it will not be a 'waste'!!

I haven't tried, but it would be nice to know if this can be done in the game.

To reinforce the validity of targeting infantry though: many years ago while in europe I used to talk to WWII vets over a beer when I could. While in Budapest I got to listen at length (over a few days) to a veterans experiences in the battle there in Dec 44 to Feb 45. At that point in the war the Russian 14.5mm ATR would only be usefull against light armor. But this guy said that the Russians would use them as a sort of sniper rifle. He related one terrifying experience where he and a corporal found a hut with food and proceeded to eat from a jar of cherry preserves. The corporal was hit in the neck by a 14.5mm ATR while eating. In dying the man sneezed blowing snot on his mustache and the head came off the body. The veteran relating this was both hungry and afraid, but kept picking the cherrys off the floor mixed with dust/rubble/blood, etc all the while the ATR is still firing at the hut. Finally he tries to escape out a window and his SMG slung over his back catches him trapped half in and out the window and still under fire. He makes a final heave out the window -- makes it, but is knocked out in the 5 or so foot drop to the ground headfirst with his helmet on. His comrades arouse him about 20min later and tease him about being asleep on the battlefield! Sorry for such a long post! This guy gave many city fighting experiences that I saved on cassette tape... BvB

I believe I have heard that ATRs with tungsten rounds won't do it, though I'm not sure and haven't tried to verify that.

Yep. The only ones that will fire at infantry are those that have HE and/or AP rounds (Boys and Lahti L-39). AT rifles won't fire tungsten at enemy infantry. Personally I wish they would, but maybe BTS doesn't want them to be used as super-snipers.

Chris, see my post above concerning Italian ATR with tungsten rounds.

ATRs are damn hard to get out of halftracks.

Light machine guns, same thing.

Is there a better way to "tag" with your cursor units that are halftrack passengers to give them orders? I've got to stab at them a few times... a real problem with a column of mounted infantry.

Would be helpful if the unit display window for the halftrack had a little icon to tell which type of unit(s) are riding. Better yet, to be able to select from there.

Nope, enemy had no vehicles on the map. The only crewed weapon in LOS of the ATR was a light gun which was still alive at the end of the battle. As far as I can tell, the kills were on a Coy HQ in a foxhole.
