el T
Good day all. I just wanted to say hello and at the same throw up a test message. With that ... TEST! So, is anyone interested in starting a game via pbem (besides you, Strider ). el T ps. I apologize if this wasn't the correct forum for this type of message.

ng cavscout
I would be interested in a PBEM. Go ahead and send a setup to the email in my addy. QB or scenario, doesn't matter, they are all fun! Welcome to the forums, and to CM.
John Kettler
el T, Welcome aboard! NG cavscout, Got your missive and am reviewing VERY rusty PBEM procedures in consequence. I propose we make it CMBB, since I'll need to be pretty up to speed by the time ROW CMC begins, and I've barely played the game. We can alternate sides from game to game. Before I do anything else, though, I need to go over to Tech Support and get the crash course in working from OS X, where my E-mail program I believe resides, to OS 9, which is where I play the game, thence back to OS X. ng cavscout
elT, I sent back my setup, did you get it? John Kettler, sounds great. I look forward to it, do you want to send me a set up or vice versa?
John Kettler
NG cavscout, Sorry for the delay, but my computer's been giving me fits. Based on similarity of symptoms to what my Gen One iMac used to exhibit before a quake, and the fact that someone with same model as mine has also been having similar problems, though not as bad, I suspect seismic flu. Regardless, five lockups in one night are enough to tax anyone's patience. Fortunately, it's only done it once today. I suggest you take advantage of this and send me a smallish scenario, rather than a QB. I prefer a scenario because ROW is fought this way, I like to train the way I'll fight, and we'll get to play sooner, instead of having to debate what is and isn't a gamey force. John Kettler
NG cavscout, I tried a quick vs. AI scenario last night, only to have my rig lock up on me just as I started force deployment prelims. It has already locked up on me once today and is threatening to do it again. Am therefore not terribly optimistic about how we'll fare, at least under present circumstances. Don't be surprised, though, if you don't hear from me for a time. Regards, John Kettler
John Kettler
NG cavscout, Got your setup or whatever it was, copied the text, but have failed miserably when it comes time to paste it into my PBEM folder. Why? The Paste command doesn't work because it's not active! The computer itself is probably fine, but we are getting significant interference here. We've noted Time Warner Cable has had several varieties on local stations, my housemate noticed the same and has had voice outages on his Time Warner Cable VOIP phone, my rig has locked up several times today, usually when I'm trying to get something done--like paste your file! Also, someone in Santa Cruz I know with the same kind of rig has been having significant problems with her iMac, too. This may sound a bit weird, but I have repeatedly observed and experienced these sorts of problems before quakes hit the West Coast, ranging from a 5.5 70 miles from my then Carson home at my latitude to the 2001 Nisqually 6.8, after which things went back to normal. Before this latter quake, there were numerous cases of electronic malfunction with burglar alarms, keyless entry systems, garage doors, computers, etc., all over the Pacific Northwest. Not only were hard drive failures reported, but in some cases, motherboards were fried by Earth emissions prior to the quake. Someone with expensive firsthand experience of these phenomena is Larry Park of www.terraresearch.net He was at one time in charge of a massively parallel processor supercomputer which was plagued with anomalous hard drive failures. Painstaking trouble shooting eventually found that that Earth emissions were frying hard drive controller circuits. Lab tests by Japanese scientists wherein they squeezed a big granite cube at just before failure levels produced broadband emissions (from many different sizes of embedded quartz crystals) which caused anomalous oscilloscope traces, interfered with garage doors, opened and closed computer programs, switched computers on and off, and my favorite, caused quartz wristwatches to run backwards. This is what I think I'm dealing with, and it's not fun! Regards, John Kettler
ng cavscout
ummm, ok. Do you need me to resend the setup?
John Kettler
NG cavscout, The vexed device seems to be working more stably today, but the problem remains--no Paste command! Correct me if I'm wrong, but am I not supposed to copy the code block received from you into my PBEM folder, then restart in OS 9, start the game and go from there? If so, then we have a problem involving either a) my rig, a corrupt file, c) data format incompatibility (odd, considering how many PC equipped combatants I've fought), or d) some combination of the above. Personally, I think your file is fine and rather doubt a corrupt file would even affect my Paste command's functioning. If the file was corrupt, I'd expect to find that out after it was copied to the folder when I tried to open it in CMAK, not before. If you want to send me the setup file again, that's fine with me. John Kettler
NG cavscout, Spoke too soon! The dreaded system lockup is back! Nor is it OS X 10.4 specific; this time, it happened twice while in OS 9.2. John Kettler
NG cavscout, While we are definitely still getting interference here, the major problem turns out to have been a mouse generating so many contradictory commands that the CPU basically had a nervous breakdown. Details are over in the relevant thread by me in Tech Support, but all you need to know here is that the new three-button Logitech optical mouse works great; cursor lag, stutter, jitter and dreaded system lock are all gone, but I still can't Paste the code block and have left a request for help at the Tech Forum. Once that's solved, we should be able to fight! Appreciate your patience! Regards, John Kettler
ng cavscout
JK, Glad things are getting better, you just seem to have very bad karma when it comes to computers. When I get a PBEM file, I just save it as a notepad file, and then when I start a multiplayer game, I just open the file from where ever. It should already be in notepad format, unless I zipped it. Just download it to where ever, and open it from inside CM. If I did zip it, then you will have to unzip it. If you don't have a zip tool, do a search for winrar or winzip. I use winrar, but also lets me put files in zip format. If you are unable to unzip files, you will have to wait till I get back to my tent in Kuwait where I have my computer. I am currently at an undisclosed location in Iraq escorting a convoy. Should be back in around a week or so. When I get back, I can then send you the uncompressed file if it is needed. As for your OS questions, I have no idea, I haven't touched an Apple since 7th grade, back in about 85 or 86.

John Kettler
NG cavscout, After consultation with several on the Tech Support board, I think we should try again, but this time Zip the setup/turn file and I'll drop it into my PBEM folder and unZip it there. This seems easier, faster, and more reliable. Regards, John Kettler

John Kettler
NG cavscout, The Zipped file angle worked like a charm, well enough to scare me when I misread the briefing and thought it was best played vs. AI. Am hoping there was a gap where page 2 normally appears in the briefing, since mine was blank. I expect to get my setup back to you later today (okay, much later--haven't been to bed yet). It's great to finally have the game working! Regards, John Kettler
John Kettler
NG cavscout, My setup is en route to you. Amazing how fast such things go when, despite appearances to the contrary, your entire force starts padlocked! And might I add that I'm not impressed by what they're teaching these days in Italian Staff College?
