Are there already Russian snipers operating in Ukraine? There were in 2020!

Recommended Posts

This isn't some wild claim, either, for it's meticulously analyzed captured Russian leader's helmet cam footage of his combat uniformed and high tech armed and equipped FSB sniper unit operating in the Luhansk area. Short of a portable satcom, these guys have everything but the kitchen sink, too, including a drone and an anti-drone EMP rifle. This devastating irrefutable proof of Russian troops operating lethally in Ukraine was obtained by Ukrainian Army Special Operations. The closest analogy to what is shown is the kind of rigorous OSINT done by Bellingcat. Absolutely NO gore.

EMP rifle?

There are several ways to put a drone out of business, such as jamming, hijacking the drone by electronically breaking into its flight control system, or even hard kill of its electronics--by burning them out--using powerful directed jamming or NNEMP (Non-Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse). May've pulled up the wrong term from memory, because what was said and shown in the video was anti-drone rifle. Here's an example.

In 2019, the US Army granted a patent for a device which would give any M4 firing a special blank cartridge the ability to generate NNEMP for use against drones and other electronics.

dbsapp,

Don't know how good her shooting skills are, but she looks mean and determined! What's the real story behind the pic?

Bufo,

Thanks! Almost posted this to Russian Arms thread, because of all the weapons, other hardware and kit, but that such a super well equipped unit was doing uniformed combat ops in 2020 caused me to post it in a separate thread because of the pertinence to the current Ukraine situation. All other things being equal, if they were doing that in 2020, the odds are they're still doing it now or, at the very least, have SO units in place keeping an intensive covert watch going. Either way, this was really an education in terms of just how superbly equipped the FSB snipers are, with the anti-drone rifle a real standout on that score and the Accuracy International sniper rifle an eyebrow raiser as to how obtained.

Ukrainians are buying weapons in order to defend their country, apparently:

Love how the the article writer blandly refers to the highly impressive weapon as a hunting rifle, but then goes on to say what's really being hunted!
Here's another article on her and her preparations for war. She has the fully kitted out version of this, which other reading indicates will fire both Russian 5.45 and NATO 5.56. In truth, she's better armed, semiautomatic only not withstanding,  than many soldiers on the planet, let alone civilian militia. In fact, the pistol grip is SO type gear. Her weapon is far better rigged than this one in a Ukrainian gun review video.

THH149,

According to the link below, she spent the equivalent of USD $1300 on the rifle, which would note is fully kitted out. In turn, by rough estimate, the bare weapon is far less than an AR-15 type weapon here in the US. In the States, I can't see any reasonable scenario in which the scope alone wouldn't run at least USD 300 and easily another USD 100 for the pistol grip and bipod, maybe twice that, in fact for the pistol grip and bipod, depending on what's bought and from whom. And remember, she's a mom with kids at home, so gets additional combat effectiveness from the mama bear defending her cubs effect.

Key phrase in the article: "Mariana Zhaglo, a 52-year-old market researcher". She obviously has high income. MUCH higher than avarage in Kyiv. Maybe she is owner of company or chief of department  - I don't know and couldn't find detailed info about her. Though, many people, which enlist to Volunteer detachments with own rifles also have income, higher than average. For example, I can't buy even Saiga carbine (civil version of AK/AKM for hunting) for 500-700 $

You can compare our prices on AR-15 based riflels, for example in our the weapon shop network IBIS (1USD =28 UAH): https://ibis.net.ua/en/products/oruzhie-nareznoe41/search/ar-15-mw3/

And from Zbroyar, which developed rifles Z-10/Z-15 (based on AR-10/15), which now using in army: http://zbroyar.ua/katalog

Haiduk,

Thanks! Looks like this woman I definitely had pegged for upper middle class (or close) got some sort of massive Defender of the Motherland Discount, since working from the Zbroyar Z-15 listing, the cost of the weapon alone is USD $1300. Of course, the reporter may've thought the whole shebang was that price in toto, rather than for the baseline weapon alone. The suppressor (using one for the 7.62 mm version as a frame of reference) is less than or equal to USD 204. Any idea on who makes the scope? The catalog illo of the Z-15 shows the SOF typre pistol grip is standard, meaning the only real remaining item on the weapon is the bipod, which can be any model that'll fit a Picatinny Rail. Ref the Saiga you mentioned, is your "can't buy" meant to convey none available or can't afford one at that price?
