I like playing as Soviets just to make the C2 work for them. In future games I like to see more means of communications apart from radio. Real life examples cut jerry cans and face shiny part towards your troops. These could be night missions; infantry reaches them they knock them over. Other echelons can see how the advance goes. Defending troops use them as range finders. Advantage for the Soviets? Sunrise is in the east.
