Hull Down Not Working for Me

Recommended Posts

For the life of me I cannot get the Hull Down Movement Command to work for me. Here is what I am doing.

  1. I select the vehicle I want to move to a hull down position.
  2. I select the Hull Down movement command.
  3. I click on the furthest point where I want the unit to move.
  4. I select the colored movement path so that the white ball is highlighted.
  5. I select target from the combat command list.
  6. And when I try to select a target it reverts back to the unit's original position instead of from the end of the path, and of course it tells me the target is out of sight.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. And tell me the correct procedure to get a vehicle to be hull down to a certain location.

Thanks.

That's how it works for me, too. I'm not a treadhead, so most of my games are infantry-centric, with usually just a few AFVs in support. I don't recall ever getting it to work correctly. b

But I didn't ever have your problem #6. I would end the movement path at a point where the vehicle wouldn't be exposed (iff'n the procedure didn't work), then would try to target the thing/area I wanted to be hull down from. Never once got it to work, so I no longer bother trying. Someone will hopefully come along and tell us what we are doing wrong.

Have you seen this video already? I find this a clear explanation: https://youtu.be/ahCRncgVrqA?list=PLYvL90uFbwhOsyXZJ0wWuRdqLWIv1Bj6e&t=167

As for the LOS tool, it always starts from the unit, but actually gives you information on the LOS from the "white ball". One of those game quirks you quickly get used to.

Yes, I have seen that video. That is where I learned the procedure in the first place.

So if I am understanding you correctly; the game is drawing the LOS line from the original position, but it is actually determining LOS from the ball?

If that is the case I am not moving the vehicle far enough forward. I'll give that a try and blame any knocked out vehicles on you. (Joke.)

And yes Usually Hapless'  videos are great.

Thanks for all the replies.

That is correct, I think in the video there is an instance the LOS is checked and you can see the line being drawn from the vehicle.

I found that one can get unwanted effects, hull-down to the wrong direction, or no visibility to the objective etc.  With experience, it's quicker to do it manually via experimental waypoints.

Yep. I had a vehicle run around to the enemy side of the slope and take a hull down position to my side with his rear pointed toward the enemy. Exactly the opposite of what I wanted. Scratch one Sherman. Oh well. Gonna keep playing with it.

+1 for agreeing with me.  :)

👍

So, how successful are you on average? I don't do armor much, so haven't done it very often manually, either. I don't recall ever getting hull down purposefully. Only by sheer blind chance when not even really trying.

I do not find it difficult to get the "desired" position manually.  The problem with the game is that one often finds the tank going from "no LOS" to "Partial Hulldown" with no "Full Hulldown" location between the two positions.  I have spent a lot of time trying to get full hulldown in those situations, but with no success.  That is an oddity to add to the Weird and Odd list.

That issue is related to the problem with ATGM vehicles which (unless CMCW has solved the problem) arises because "Hulldown" for an ATGM vehicle exposes the entire top of the vehicle rather than just the missile optics and launcher.  For this reason it's easy for an enemy to see the ATGM vehicle and kill it.  Hence it's often suicidal to use ATGM vehicles unless the range is 2Km+.

I asked about whether CMCW has solved this, but my question was ignored.  So, am not confident.

I also agree with Erwin on all above comments.

Its better to just learn to do it manually, and in truth I can do it most times without even checking, Just eye ball where I thick hull down is.

and no there is no method of getting full hull down, many times it will be partial.

What you hope for is using the Hunt command as you move to the location and that the AI spots in its cycle at the right moment and stops in a full hull down position.

And in truth, the player should not have more control and guarantee full hull down anyway. Way to much micro management wanted.

Think about it , you think they can get a real tank in perfect hull down positions while in combat all the time. NOOOOO

Yessssss, if they are pre set waiting for the enemy.  two totally different things.

So pre set ambush  locations is were it suffers at times.

Watching a Bill Hardenberger tip he stated the partial hull down was acceptable. At any rate I stopped worrying about it after that. Probably means full hull down not possible considering the cover? If both were available full hull down would happen prior to partial, I assume. That is logical one hopes!

Don't get me wrong...  In many cases one can find good "Full Hulldown" positions.  But, it happens too often that the tank will go from no LOS to "Partial Hulldown" with no possibility of "Full Hulldown" - and there is no explanation for that oddity.

Camera position1 one segment up with the mouse wheel gives you the P.O.V from the fighting compartment. To click the waypoint, go to the bottom of the screen till your movement order changes into an arrow, now move up till you just regain your way point now click to get your waypoint. Check with the LOS tool.

That's pretty cool chuckdyke. Vey small incremental move.
