Sorry, I have the x-55, my son flys with the x-52.  We bother prefer the 55, but it is more expensive, especially now during the pandemic.

I have the old Saitek version.  Logitech bought them out and rebranded it the X-56 Rhino

The controller is manufactured overseas unfortunately and they're taking much lower priority in available shipping space over critical supplies.

I have the X-56 myself. I wouldn't blame people for sticking with the older models though, i'm not crazy about the self illumination feature. I'm overall very pleased with it though. With DCS especially i've found a job for literally every button and switch on it and I think the swappable springs for the joystick are really cool. It does have a bit of play in the stick out the box, but that doesn't bother me much. The throttle is super-fine though, and has the benefit of optional split levers.

Also there are complaints about early wear and failure of some of the stick's rheostats but I have yet to encounter this and I use mine pretty heavily. I have no doubt it's been happening to people but it doesn't seem unduly flimsy or weak for such an affordable HOTAS.

It's more than a little annoying to me that IL-2 1946 still has things like night fighters and carrier operations that none of the current IL2 games have. Carrier ops require really high fidelity and lots of new flyable airplane models so I get why that's been on the backburner but man Great Battles has the freaking 110 and Ju-88 fully modeled but that's it. No radar sets, no Kammhuber Line, no searchlights etc.

Well, it of course takes time and resources to model all of that stuff, and to date there really hasn't been that high of a demand from the IL2 community for more detailed night operations. Do recall as well that all of those fancy radar sets in the original IL2 were implemented after 1C transferred the rights to further content development to Team Daidalos.

Just as a follow up, I finally decided on IL2 1946 B.A.T., got my new maxed out rig, BAT downloaded and installed effortlessly on it, and new controllers are in the shipping pipeline. (My 14 year old CH stick/throttle/pedals are problematic under Windows 10 and just plain weren’t recognized by Windows or IL2.)

Rig is Alienware AMD Ryzen 9, 2TB SSD, 2TB SATA storage.

Sprung for Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS and pedals. (Forgot all about Virgil when shopping, cost was about the same for T-master stuff.)

Happy flying!

Personally I would go with Il-2 1946 and more specifically VP Modpack, it's not as bloated as BAT, and if your comfortable with adding mods you can specialise your install to your taste.

My particular interest is the Nightfighter/Nightbomber war, and I have built up a very specific install covering this. I have even made some of my own mods for it in the past.

Whilst Il-2 Great Battles is far better visually, I find the AI fairly predictable and easy to beat.

VPmodpack is available at SAS also

Thanks slippy. I’m thinking of doing a separate install for the VP pack. Either way, I’ll have plenty of material to pig out on for a long time!

Any updates on the flying career of @mjkerner?  And did you go for VR or TrackIR, or just the 'regular' controls?

I'm still dabbling with Il2 Tank Crew, and still feeling the need for new equipment...

Hi Vacillator, yes, I’m up and running. I already had TrackIR 5, so no VR for me. Besides, there’s no way in hell I’d ever be able to memorize all the controls! The Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS are really nice, but neither controller have wheels I can easily use for aileron and elevator trim. As for actual flying, not much so far. Been rebuilding some small, heavily defended ports that I had built and made many missions for back in the day. Went with 1946 BAT, btw.

Sounds good, although surpised there are no trim wheels - I though the throttle base had at least one?

I think I can put my old X52 back into service (I'll just ignore it's spacey looks) but my TrackIR2 is probably best consigned to the 'old parts I'll never use again, but for some reason I'm keeping' box in the attic 😉.

All this just for Tank Crew at the moment, but when they put a sale on, the prices for Battle of Stalingrad and the other aircraft DLCs are pretty enticing so I might get in the air again.
