  1. It is comments like this, which pull in politics for no related reason without fear of retribution that lead some of our members to believe that there are different rules depending on which side of the aisle you sit. I am not a fan of any of the candidates we have, but I have to wonder if the results would be the same if the post referenced Biden's supposed dementia?
  2. I was snapped at by a senator for referring to him as a member of congress, "I am not a congressman, I am a senator and expect you to refer to me as such". I asked, "Is the senate not part of the congress?", he told me that representatives were in the congress, senators were not. I lost faith in many of our elected officials that day.
  3. Not to nitpick, but the Union burned the Merrimack to keep it from falling into the hands of the confederacy.
  4. Sounds a lot like something the evil orange man said years ago. You can argue about his motivation, but not the accuracy of the statement.
  5. Could someone please explain to me how recruiting in the UK and US relates to the current conflict in Ukraine? I think we have spent enough time on this. Now if someone did a study on how hamster behavior was affecting recruiting in Russia and Ukraine, I would be all for it, but this discussion is simply a distraction bordering on ideological/political sniping.
  6. Please tell me I am not the only one that thought Snuffleupagus joined the dark side!
  7. Not to get technical, but amendments to the constitution were passed, according to a process laid down by the constitution to end slavery and give women the right to vote. So, the outcome various compromises may have been their "intent" as stated, they also intended the constitution to be modified via a process they laid down. Not sure women as chattel was ever mentioned in the constitution. It may have been common practice, but it was not a status proffered by the constitution. Just a little constitutional nerdery.
  8. I am not sure that is true, the speaker pro tempor takes over immediately upon the speaker vacating the position to ensure that normal operations of the house continue. You may be thinking of what happens when there is a change in power and the new house cannot conduct business until a speaker is elected. For the last few decades a vacancy during a term is handled through the speaker pro tempor.
  9. I am envisioning a game like CM where anything out of LOS is blurred except a radius around drones you control. This would allow you to plot movement or call-in strikes based upon the limited view you have from the drones. Of course, you could also layer in occasional updates from satellite or other overhead sources.
  10. After reading the article I note that the headline could be re-written as "Approximately 10% of republicans in House and Senate write letter opposing further aid to Ukraine"
  11. Catastrophe, I thought it was more of a cleansing of biblical proportions, only there was no ark. We were a messy bunch
  12. Ok, as a long-time member of this board I have an amazingly small post count, of course I was a victim of the great general forum flush many years ago, but my count is still paltry compared to others of my longevity. Why? I very seldom post my opinion unless I have taken the time to do the research to back it up, I learned from painful experience that if I don't take the time, I will get my a$$ handed to me by those who do. So now if it is important to me I will do my research and share it along with my post. Simply screaming that the sky is actually bluish purple over and over will not convince anyone. Now if I provide some reasoning or at least a link to support my opinion I know that I have at least attempted to provide the bare minimum out of respect to others on this board. If they come back with a counter argument, I am willing to listen, debate and often be proven wrong. That is how discussions work in a civil environment, and how we all grow. By the way, "Technically, the short wavelengths that scatter across the sky correspond to the colours blue and violet, making the real colour of the sky a bluish purple." https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-science/why-is-the-sky-blue
  13. While I would love to see this, I just don't think anything will come of it. For the most part these guys are mercenaries not "true believers" and unless someone steps up to arm and pay them, I doubt much will come of this.
  14. It doesn't matter how good the engine is if the tires are shredded.
  15. It looks like it, east/southeast of Tokmak. Of course, I could be wrong.
  16. When I lived in Germany in the late 80s I had a friend who gave me a hard time because I only knew two languages. Which was not quite true, I knew English, German and could pass with Swedish. He kept telling me how linguistically isolated Americans were when he grew up speaking 3 languages. German, Dutch and French. I pointed out that since he was from Frankfurt, he was within 2 hours of Belgium and France. Whereas I could drive 6 hours and still be in the same state. I argued that proximity makes a difference. To this day we disagree in multiple languages.
  17. What about an intervention by our new space lobster overlords? Are we still good on that?
  18. Mining the approaches to a Russian city would be a step to far and St Petersburg would be a poor choice. If one were to go this route, which I would not, I would choose to hinder access to Kaliningrad in the Baltic. Easier access and it is surrounded by NATO(or soon to be NATO) countries.
  19. That would make sense for one span, but I don't think it would be so uniform on both spans. I also note that it is fairly consistent on both sides of the support columns. I am no expert, but I am curious.
  20. I find the scorching on the surface to be interesting. Considering the speculation that the detonation was below the bridge, in my mind we have two options. 1 - the fireball wrapped around and back over the bridge to scorch the surface. Seems implausible to me as energy tends to travel in straight lines. The heat would blast out the sides then up with some minor wrap around, but not over the width of the span so uniformly. 2 - The blast was of such intensity that its heat discolored the surface from below implying extremely high temperature. If this is the case, I would question the strength of the rebar within the pre-stressed concrete spans and the supporting column.
  21. Typically when I say or hear "not ideal" the intent is that it could be better, but it could also be worse. I don't think of it as awful. Perhaps I am an outlier in this case. Now when a politician uses it, they could mean almost anything Could be better It is awful I disagree with the plan
  22. I would think a coordinated ATACMS/Storm Shadow attack would seriously tax any air defense with radically different attack profiles and increase likelihood of success. Similar to the US at Midway, although it was unplanned. Get the defenders to focus on one attack vector and hit them from another. In this case I would reverse and get the eyes up with ATACMS then hit them low with shadows. It would be expensive, but soooo worth it.
