I would be quite surprised if there's actually any account that says "we formed squad wedge and advanced", since that sort of formation will organically form, especially if that's how the recruits were drilled.

Womble, this photo will cheer you. It was taken during the Fustian Operation in Sicily and depicts British paras advancing line abreast. Keep in mind these were highly trained troops, probably meriting a 'Crack' rating in CM nomenclature. It's unknown whether they were under fire at the time. Or contributing a publicity shot to The Times. ;)

It struck me, why does this game run so much more smoothly than CMBN?

CMBN v2.0 runs more smoothly than CMBN v1.0 did too. One secret was reduced polygon count (where you can't see it) replaced by normal mapping. a LOT of tiny 8-sided 3-D running gear bolts that the game doesn't have to render anymore. And nobody seems to have noticed the difference. ;)

I'd vote for a publicity still.

I vaguely recall the famous director John Huston was assigned to take newsreel camera footage of fighting in Italy. But the thing is, on the battlefield people do their best to not be seen. Huston was compelled to restage events more 'dramtically' for the camera after the fact, oftentime reusing the same units who had fought the battle initially. If its a good shot from a good camera angle it was likely staged, or at least restaged. :)

What differences would there have been between the German Fallschirmjaeger 1943 TO&E that we'll see in GL, vs. the 1941 TO&E that the FJ troops would have had in Crete? I'd be curious to know, since GL (with its addition of FJ and Commonwealth troops to Fortress Italy) would seem to make Crete scenarios a possibility.
