  1. Also, this: "The last section, and perhaps the most interesting, is why the presenter shows a complete lack of understanding of what it actually means to be outnumbered (by even 2 to 1) in a modern war and where both sides have very similar levels of technology"
  2. @akd I think you're a beta tester or otherwise close to Battlefront. What's your take on this? Is the mortar halftrack working as intended or did I stumble on some issues with it? (The issues of not being able to fire from the destination waypoint, and not being able to fire fast)
  3. In this case I'm talking about the German halftrack, so Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251/2. Haven't tested out the American equivalent, but I'm assuming it's the same thing.
  4. I think so too. Compare with the MG armed halftracks, where you issue a fire order to the vehicle itself, but then a passenger steps up to man the gun and fire, if there's no dedicated gunner crewmember available. In the case of the mortar halftrack, it seems there's a link missing somehow, that doesn't tell the mortar passengers they should fire.
  5. I think it's supposed to work, because the halftract itself can be issued a fire order - even though it does not have any weapons!
  6. Would probably have been against the houserules though. Most people agree the defender can't plot any prepared artillery, even with a delay.
  7. I think you guys are over-thinking this. I'm not asking for super-fast accurate fire. I'm asking why the mortar halftrack can't be ordered to a position and then to open fire from there. Every other unit in the game can do this. Not sure why the mortar halftrack can't. It's a game interface issue, not a realism thing. I'd be happy if I could plot a movement order, then draw a targeting line from there, and the mortar halftrack would move, then say "deploying" for a realistic amount of time, and then start to fire.
  8. Well, he realised that he was going to die one day. Even the Pharaos knew that; though they were supposedly "gods", they still had the pyramids built as their tombs. Hitler thought he was building the foundations for a 1000-year Third Reich. His wars were to create space for that empire. But: I think there are basically two kinds of dictators. There are those who are content to rule their little kingdom, and then there are those who want to make their kingdom bigger. Hitler was in the second category, and not just by chance or external factors. I think it was a fundamental part of his personality that the whole purpose of seizing power was not to live a life of luxury but to realise his mad political ideas. If he had been content with ruling Germany (and expelling the Jews instead of murdering them), there's no reason why he couldn't have kept his Nazi charade going for the rest of his life. Just as the Kim Jong dynasty of North Korea. Nobody cares how cruel such dictators are to their own people, how many huge military marches they do, whatever kind of propaganda bull**** they spew - as long as they keep it within their own borders it's very unlikely to trigger war with other nations. Especially if they are useful pawns of a superpower. Hitler could have done the same thing, but then he wouldn't have been Hitler.
  9. Not sure why they'd not be able to fire quite quickly after reaching their destination though. Obviously with the dismounted mortars, there's a setup time, but that time is spent physically assembling the mortar again..
  10. But the results of the decisions of one powerful man still depend on everyone else. It's like rock-paper-scissors. What's the difference between a winning move and a bad move? It's what the other guys does. Then when we write history, we think the outcome was inevitable, but that's not apparent when we are in the midst of it.
  11. Ok, thanks. I feel quite confident now that it's not just me having this problem. I'd really love to see this fixed, as it seems to be an issue of how the game tiles the snow textures. So just installing a mod won't solve the problem. So, if anyone reads this, I'm not going to say "BF fix or somethin'".. but .. yeah. That would be really nice.
  12. Thanks for the AAR. Seems your force picks worked out great for you, but did you ever consider buying some Nebelwerfers? That village looks like a good target for those. Of course, it would be a gamble too - a crafty opponent might anticipate artillery on the town and place most of his men outside.
  13. Look at how much smoke it generates. Would be nice to see this reflected a bit more in the game.
  14. You're actually getting the same problem too. Try looking at the swampy area at the top of your first pic, and on the forest on the left part of your second pic. And some areas of the maps seem more affected than others for some reason. Sometimes there's only a hint of a fine line, sometimes it really sticks out.
  15. I don't have any mods installed. It's a fresh CMFB install, just bought it.
  16. The problem is not that the mortar can't fire before the vehicle moves. It's the other way around: I want to drive the mortar up to just behind a crest and then immediately start to fire on a target only visible from there. This is possible when the mortar team is on foot, but not while they are in the halftrack.
  17. Pour out a whole bucket of dice. All have to come up six.
  18. Propaganda pics taken in situations of little or no danger maybe? In any case, wouldn't the gunner's eye need to be level with the gun barrel while firing to aim the thing?
  19. About Germany, isn't the whole point that it was to be neutered after the war, so that it wouldn't become a danger to Europe once more? And as a result of that neutering the German people today are culturally not very militaristic. So, in a democracy, if the people are not militaristic, why would they vote for politicians who would take their tax money and spend it on the army? There's lots of other things you can do with taxes, that are better for the average person. Or at least are felt more directly than paying for having loads of tanks rumbling around on exercises in some distant field.
  20. "Allowed" is a nice way to put it Just like you kindly allowed the Romans, Vikings, and eventually the Normans into your country. Jolly big tea party, that...
  21. So I've been playing a pbem this weekend, and all's going well until suddenlt my opponent says that his game crashes when he tries to send his next turn. He can open my file 33, but after doing his orders and clicking end turn, the game crashes to windows with the generic error "Final Blitzkrieg has stopped working". We tried the following without success: He reinstalled the game. He tried sending a turn without any orders. I tried re-doing my turn, to produce a new turn 33. It still crashes. I tried opening his turn, using his password. I get the same result. Crashes on end turn. He says he only ever saw this problem with very large savegames (over 40mb). But this is a small battle, so the files are only 4 mb in size. Any way we can save this pbem? And prevent it from happening again?
