  1. Thanks for your reply Streety. You've reminded me that Sid Meier's Gettysburg had that feature - create a random game and it has a code so you can recreate exactly the same game. Sometimes I think game designers are a bit dictatorial in the way they treat their customers in telling them how they should play the game and what options are allowed or not. I like having unit bases on so I can see where my guys are, others don't. CMBO gives you the option (Shift but the newer CMBN removed the option. How is that an improvement.
  2. All in all CMBO more fun than CMBN and it plays on my laptop and notebook.
  3. Just played a small QB. Still good stuff. Can anybody remind me if there is a way to do a QB and save it immediately so as to do a replay from either side before placing units and starting?
  4. From the OP ""kills the squad leader in one quick burst. He then... throws his hands up in surrender no more than a second later." I think I read about a very similar incident that happened to the Australians attacking Italians at Bardia. A group of Italians in a foxhole were surrendering and as an Aussie sergeant or officer went towards them one of the Italians drops his hands, picks up his rifle and quickly shoots the Aussie, then drops the rifle and puts his hands up again with a big grin on his face. The next Aussies pushed the guy back in the trench and gave him a quick burst from the Bren. The next couple of Italian foxholes saw what happened and surrendered immediately with no hanky panky.
  5. Didn't even Wittman assume the anti-tank gun would always get the first shot? Basically you won't spot a decently camouflaged AT gun until it has fired. "Soldier, I want you to drive down that road and keep going until you get blown up." Patton, maybe.
  6. Only girls pause in RT. or is it: Real men don't pause.
  7. I've got a question about mods too. Can you mod the icons and bases, or the height above the unit the icon is positioned? Maybe it is my eyesight or my laptop screen but I find it barely possible to see units and I don't like the floating icons. What I would like therefore is to have all unit bases lit up brightly - not just the selected unit; and then play with icons off. Alternatively, maybe if you can adjust the height of the icons so if I switched this so the icon was actually on the unit - it might not look nice but at least I could see exactly where my units were.
  8. I'm with Pearl Harbour too. The Japanese had a SE Asia empire; I don't think the US would have gone to war with Japan no matter how pissed off they were without some such outrageous attack to move sentiment. So the Japs blew it by doing Pearl Harbour. Then four days or so later on December 11 1941 Hitler, who had a european empire, blows it by declaring war on the US. Bad move. We all know how that turned out.
  9. Thank you Pak40. That is what I would like. I did "stop yer bitchin" as some clown with a vulgar turn of phrase put it, and tried some of the mods but they do seem to only affect the bases of the units selected.
  10. Well I feared mention of CMx1 would start the vitriol flowing. So let's just leave it. I'll play one for fun and one for less fun. At least there's a lively forum.
  11. Thanks for your replies guys. @Blazing 88's. I entirely agree. I didn't want to mention CMx1 because it's heresy around here. But yes, frankly it's so bloody obvious. Plus so easy to play with mouse in one hand, champagne in the other. I don't need no stinking hot keys. I blow my nose in the general direction of better graphics.
  12. Bloody icons. Hate them; can't see whether my men are in a tree or behind a wall, in a field or in a house. I first hated icons when I saw them in Theatre of War and what an awful gaming experience that was. Why can't bases or units be highlighted as brightly as the icons? If I toggle icons off I can't see anything. Sorry, but for me this (plus other UI gripes) means it just isn't an enjoyable gaming experience. Maybe those of you with great computers or those who are enthusiasts will see past all this. As for the RTS clickfest, well ............ I guess I'll drift by the forum occasionally to see the interesting threads but I'm so disappointed. Time for the medication.
  13. Ready Rack - the truth? "The main ammunition rack was a fabricated aluminium box approximately three feet wide, two feet high, and three feet deep. It had a series of three-inch longitudinal tubes nested together in several rows to accommodate thirty-four rounds of ammunition.................. ....the trouble was obvious once I got inside the tank and examined the front of the rack. This particular tank had thirty rounds of 75mm ammunition and four bottles of Cognac."
  14. Ok, so here's a bit from Normandy, the Tigers bit was in Germany 1945. Action at Villiers-Fossard "...the Germans ..would run telephone wire completely around the perimeter of each of several fields in a row. As they were driven out of a field into the one behind it, they could hook their telephone clips into the wiring and immediately call for mortar fire in the field they had just left. This abilty to get mortar and artillery fire almost instantly would prove devastating to our tanks and infantry who had just occupied the field." "after the two dozer tanks were knocked out, the only way to get through the hedgerows was by planting explosives and blowing enormous gaps so that the remaining tanks could pass. This of course warned the Germans where the next tanks were coming;" Actions at Airel, Pont Hebert, and Vents Heights "The building was in flames and two dead, young American soldiers were lying naked on the ground near a Jeep. Apparently, they had taken cover from artillery fire in the courtyard; a shell had struck the building and the blast had been deflected directly down on them.It had blown them both out of the Jeep and torn off their clothes. Their horribly burned flesh was splotched red and black." "We found out later that the Germans had been able to hoist a 75mm PAK41 anti tank gun into the church steeple about quarter of a mile from us.... close to daybreak one of our tanks located the anti tank gun in the steeple and knocked it out with one shot. This decreased the incoming fire considerably. "The first casualty was an M4 tank with the body of one of the crew still inside. According to surviving crew members they were hit on the highway. The German gun crew apparently held their fire until the tank was no more than fifty yards away." "When a tanker inside a tank received the full effect of a penetration, sometimes the body, particularly the head, exploded and scattered blood, gore and brains throughout the entire compartment."
  15. "Although the entire column was trapped some of the veteran crews stayed cool and utilized their advantages. One of the crews with a M4 Sherman with a short-barrelled 75mm was near the middle of the column when the three King Tigers appeared on the right side........in a split second he told his gunner to load a white phosphorus round. It struck the glacis plate right above the driver's compartment with a blaze of flames and smoke. Although there was no chance of penetration, the shock in the tank must have been terrific. The entire faceplate in front of the turret was covered in burning particles of white phosphorus which stuck to the sides of the tank. The smoke engulfed the tank, and the fan in the engine compartment sucked the smoke inside the fighting compartment. The German crew must have thought the tank was on fire and immediately abandoned it. Although the tank suffered little damage, had the crew stayed inside they would have been over come by the deadly fumes. The Sherman immediately turned its gun on the second tank in the column and fired white phosphorus, with the same result. Although the ingenious tank commander knocked out two King Tiger tanks (without ever getting a penetration), his tank was then knocked out by another Tiger." From "Death Traps" by Belton Y. Cooper So, now you know how to do it.
  16. Are those krauts wearing puttees? Did they nick them from the Brits? What machine specs give those pictures? I'm on a 3gb Acer laptop 2.13 giga something with Intel HD graphics and frankly I prefer CMBO graphics. Time I bought another PC so just let me know what I need to get that quality. Money no object.
  17. Quick OT - do I need another login for the repository as well as forum - it keeps asking me for registered user and I enter my forum stuff again, and again and again etc. Thanks
  18. Maybe they've forgotten how to do it since CMx1 days.
  19. Agreed completely. But probably part of the whole design ethos philosophy thingummy
  20. Seeing as there are whole threads on bazookas, snipers, and tanks firing while moving I thought easy tailoring would enable people to change it to what they wanted. I didn't realise CMBN was a cult and what I suggested was a heresy. Sorry, or 'my bad' as the children seem to say these days.
  21. Surely as it is a game people should be able to vary it to make it enjoyable for them. Rather than a fixed value for certain features why not have sliders that can be changed under options? Examples: Bazooka - default 50% chance hit at 100 yards. Slider to vary from 0% to 100% Snipers/marksmen - default 3x accuracy of ordinary rifleman. Slider to vary between 1 and 10 times. Tank firing on move - default setting, variable to 0% or 100% You could even do it differently for each side if you think Shermans should be able to fire on the move; or German snipers better than US.
  22. There's a wikipedia article on snipers which gives some background. Basically I think German snipers should be more numerous or effective than allied. I once met a guy who was a British sniper in WW2. The thing he liked was that he was basically independent - e.g. he didn't have to conform to uniform requirements and the one thing in particular I remember him saying was that he wore plimsolls (gym shoes) because they were light and quiet, unlike army boots.
  23. I have the cdv 3 pack CMBO CMBB CMAK anthology and they all work on a Acer 4820T laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The graphics is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. Of course the fact it plays the old games so well also means it is really slow with the new. In fact I am playing more CMBO than CMBN because I simply find it more fun and the quick battles are, well quick.
