  1. Is there a reason I can't have the icons off and all the unit bases lit up? This has long bugged me because I loath the icons as I think the unit is where the icon is and not below, which may mean it is this side of a wall or hedge and not that; whereas a lit up base would show me where it is and which way it is facing. I raise this because womble says in post 4 the icons require lots of computer power, so having them off would be good.
  2. Well I think Jacksteri is winning this one. 90 posts in this thread in just over three hours. Must be close to a record.
  3. It's all so sad. ! But at least today we also now know the Mayan calendar merely ran out of space rather than running out of time.
  4. Now being a naive chap I thought that when I'm watching my one minute action the clever little computer is whirring away calculating who should live and who should die and I watch in "real time". But after clicking on the red button prematurely, so to speak, and seeing it jump to the minute end, which means it looks to me like all the clever stuff is when the little blue bar makes its way across the screen, and it's all over before I to see anything. Frankly, it's a bit like finding out Santa doesn't really exist. But if he doesn't, where do the presents come from?
  5. Is that a variation the old line about the tanks having one forward gear and nine reverse?
  6. I thought the waterproofing was for fording rivers because bridges were too weak.
  7. For a game that's supposed to be realistic loads of people seem to like to do USA vs USA or German vs German. I thought I was the only one who did this. So many men have died unnecessarily I've court martialled myself.
  8. Merde. You got that joke in before me. I blow my nose in your general direction. Oh what a lucky man he was.
  9. Maybe I confused "last year" and "the last year". A site called icasualties shows only one death in the 12 months since November 2011 - assuming it has been updated of course. This would seem to be the number Brecher referred to in his article of about September.
  10. Fighting on interior lines, plus it's their country rather than someone else's. Wasn't 2011 first year no US casualties in Iraq sine 2003 (or maybe one road accident). Do any of you read a column called "War Nerd" written by Gary Brecher on a thing called "The Exile" ?
  11. Yeah, there's no point. They've all drunk the Kool-Aid.
  12. 23 posts in just over two hours. See what you've done. You've unleashed a horde of Barbarians (Civ2 reference?). There is only one true Wargame and ***** is its prophet. I think I came out of the last scrap reasonably well, but it's just so tempting to wade back in again.
  13. I agree with sly sniper post 497 that this is one of the things that could be made adjustable by sliders. Then at any one level BFC could have their defaults and individuals can up or down factors as they feel suits their idea of realism or playability.
  14. Oh dear, aren't we allowed to use the F word in case children are looking? I think it was even printed with the F word when it was published in about 1929.
  15. I'm late to this thread and haven't read it all, but a hmg if properly set up (e.g. as in WW1 with interlinking fire zones) will kill or hit almost everything that passes through it (95%+). There's a slightly chilling episode in Robert Graves's autobiography "Goodbye To All That" where an officer orders an advance and runs forward, looks back after a few seconds and sees nobody but his ADC - and so says to him "Where are they? Are they all cowards?" To which the ADC says "No Sir, willing enough. But they're all ****ing dead".
  16. Great link. Other things that seem interesting, to me at least: p160 - German? helmets on the front of US tank. p162 - re-positioned 50 cal p163 - 11% 1945 tank casualties due to panzerfaust or similar p196 - that M10 with Cuilin still attached was in Duren 24 Feb 45 p203 - US white tank stars painted over p221 - M10 with 50 cal p223 - US put German markings on tank (M5) and used German speakers in a ruse p243 - use of dozer blade Shermans to lead assault to get some protection from panzerfaust p243 - Pershing hit by 88mm from 200 yards, ammo set off, but crew survived.
  17. Yeah I'm up and running again and 1.11 fixed the invisible troops problem in Win8. Thanks to those who helped or gave support through showing I wasn't the only one who can make a mess of what a tech person regards as obvious.
  18. Just read one of the links John Kettler provided, and read about Murphy dying in a private plane crash after the war aged 46. Reminded me that a great book on 82nd Airborne is an autobiography by Ross S Carter called "Those Devils in Baggy Pants". He served in Africa, Italy, Normandy and the Ardennes. One of only 3 (I think) of his original platoon to survive. He wrote the book while dying of cancer aged 28.
  19. Ok I'm sorted now. Re-activated and 1.11 cured the invisible soldiers under Widows 8. Thank you. End of whining and back to the killing.
  20. Playing CM and playing with the mistress. Well, she turns up early, so it's just as we'll I was whining on the forum rather than playing CM because at least I was able to say I was just finishing off an email. Whew. That was a close call.
  21. I ran a computer support operation back in the 1980s when 20mb was the size of IBM PC hard disk. People usually get annoyed when they genuinely feel they've been misled or something isn't as a normal human being would understand it. For example, at the time referred to above, the company sold an accounting suite that said the stock control module could handle up to 32,000 stock lines. Salesman promises it will do as advertised to get the sale; turns out the customer ran an aircraft spares business and did have about 20,000 stock lines. No wonder it took about 36 hours to update the stock system. Here, I go to my Battlefront CMBN directory, click on the file marked: "Battlefront.com Helpdesk" directory and it immediately takes me to a page on eLicense FAQ. I read it; do some of what it says; muck up my installations; go to the help desk and get a siupport ticket which tells me - "CMBN's copy-protection system does NOT have an unlicense feature like our previous copy-protection system, eLicense. The game comes with 4 initial activations. Uninstalling does NOT remove the activation. The activation remains in place until a significant hardware or operating system change takes place. At that point the activation disappears and you would need to reactivate the game. ....." I've done that about 15 hours ago. Still waiting. Sorry, I think potential customers should be aware of the potential horrors of this activation system.
  22. So the fans will agree with Steve whatever, drunk or sober. Others will feel v2.0 does what should have been in v1.0; but that's an old software rule. And I can't even get 1.11 to run on my only laptop that might run it because I've messed up with my activations after installing and getting the invisible soldiers Windows 8 problem; uninstalling and now it can't find the supposed activation on attempting re-install. It's like religion really, those who believe smile smugly, those who don't believe can't understand why people who otherwise seem to act intelligently suddenly blow it by professing belief in some medieval or other primitive belief system. Believe it or not I drafted in even more uses of "believe" or "belief" but couldn't believe what I had written.
  23. Now I've lost activations I had: I went to the directory and clicked on Battlefront.com helpdesk I read about unlicensng: " Thirdly, the unlicense screen is opened automatically whenever you choose to "uninstall" software. Before the uninstall procedure starts, you will see the unlicense window appear. Verify if the correct license key is entered and click on the "Unlicense" button. Pay attention to see if the unlicensing procedure is successful" So I did uninstall - and it has completely wiped the install. But now I find those instructions don't apply to CMBN. Gee thanks guys.
  24. Yeah, see Seedorf is Peedorf, like me. And also someone called Glynn41 or somesuch who did post on a tech place.
  25. Because that's the place to do it. It's customer action. If they treat me like a teenager they are scared will rush off and pirate their games I respond accordingly. I've got almost all AGEOD, Matrix, and Paradox games - they don't mess me around. And BFC didn't on CMx1. Instead BFC have got a grumpy 58 year old who can't understand why he can't just play the darn game he paid for.
