  1. Yup, the examples against the AI are pretty silly. I'm happy getting only 10 kills with a mortar section because it means it was causing lots of suppression and putting a serious hurt on a squad or two.
  2. Is this possible? Do you mean bazookas on jeeps firing on the move? If so, I'll try that if I have to..
  3. I just started a large ladder game in FI and I'm playing the US. I have a bad feeling about this one.. when I was purchasing units, I couldn't believe I had nothing at all to choose from to combat the big bad German tanks. People talk about tactics and things we could do to take them out, but the fact is that it generally requires your opponent to be stupid and careless with his tanks. Yeah, maybe if he sits in one place and doesn't move, or doesn't use infantry to protect his tanks, or runs straight into the middle of my forces, I might be able to take them out. The fact is though, my opponent is quite good and knows how to protect his tanks. It's hard enough to kill his Shermans and M10's with my Panthers, since he's so careful - now with the possibility of him having Tigers against my Sherman 75s and 57mm AT guns, I don't see how I can have much hope. Maybe late in the game some bazooka guy will get lucky, but that's about it.
  4. I was thinking more in terms of getting bogged down, while infantry move and ambush as they please.
  5. Here's a minor issue that isn't a game breaker or anything, but is kinda annoying to see. O.k., first of all - If you have a PanzerGrenadier(motorized) squad, you have 11 guys, and normally they can only be split into 2 sections. However, if the squad has a schrek, you can split them into 3 sections. If you simply press the split squad button, it works fine, and you get an anti-tank team and two other sections. The problem comes when you split them "manually". So, if you first split the squad by pressing the "anti tank" button, the schrek and rifleman split off, then you press "assault" or "scout" or whatever for the remaining guys, the anti-tank icon gets assigned to one the squads that isn't actually the anti-tank section. Not a big deal, but can be a bit confusing when trying to track down which section has the schrek, since they have a normal infantry icon, and the 4-man assault section is labeled with an anti-tank icon.
  6. Stormy, windy, rainy sounds like the worst possible conditions to choose almost all armor and vehicles.

  8. HAHA yeah, crazy huh? Noob and I started on Friday and finished Saturday. The turns didn't take very long at all once it started going, since it was a small scenario. We were just shooting turns back and forth to each other, and I surrendered after around 30 minutes of play. We're gonna start another one up pretty soon, and I've already set my mind on getting good at the Italians. All these people are complaining about how bad, or inflexible, they are - but instead of joining in the complaining, I've determined to simply figure them out. If I can get a win with the Italians against a good opponent like Noob, it will be a glorious victory for me. I may have to revert to using Roman Legion tactics and bust out some Julius Cesar sh*t on him.
  9. This is a game, and so decisions must be made to best represent the limitations of the Italian squads within the confines of the game. This seems to be the best way to represent how inflexible they were. It isn't perfect, but it certainly makes them play differently and with less flexibility than other nation's infantry. I just played a pbem as Italians and it was a learning experience, but it was fun. Noob and I played the "Avanti" scenario, and I had to surrender because I simply used them in the wrong way. I was trying to play them like the Germans that I'm so used to, and my guys were dropping like flies. I'm looking forward to playing with them again and adjusting my tactics and being more careful this time.
  10. I much prefer using direct fire rather than indirect for mortars. I usually have a mortar section attached to each platoon, and have them follow along wherever they go. If I can afford it, I like to make them "crack", high motivation, and +1 so they don't necessarily need to be in command all the time to be effective. When I'm getting into position, I have them slow crawl into position and hide, and when the platoon engages I open up with the mortars, too. As long as they aren't right on the front lines, they are usually fine. Best to use target light to conserve ammo since they don't carry much if they are an independant section without ammo bearers. I'm in a medium battle pbem right now that is soon to be over, and my 81mm mortars seem to have pretty much won the game for me. With a good LOS from a decent distance back, everytime I saw a squad start appearing on the other side of a hedgerow or moving through a forest, they'd get mortars raining down on them.
  11. I use Target Light for my mortars quite a bit, also. I noticed my Italians firing quite a bit with their little mortars in a pbem I just played - which is good, since they have so much ammo and need a good amount to have an effect, it seems. I only wish there was a way to target directly with mortars, and make the riflemen not fire also. I didn't notice that they did that until playing my first game of FI yesterday. The rifleman in my squad were area firing along with my mortars at a group of trees a few hundred yards away.
  12. I'm looking forward to following this aar. Sounds like fun, though it could be a nightmare trying to keep track of everything that's going on. I can't imagine how long it would take me to do a turn in a battle this size. As it is, I can take hours sometimes when planning a turn on "just" a large battle.
  13. Yeah, it looks like some sort of shrubbery.
  14. Damn, people.. some of you spend so much time arguing and should just play the friggin game. It is what it is and they have their reasons for it being like that. They aren't going to change it for you. Learn how to play with them the way the game is designed, and have some fun.
  15. Yeah, I agree. I'm having to tiptoe through some of the threads because I'm scared I'll read something that gives away some crucial info about a scenario. I like to discover that stuff myself, and not "cheat".
  16. Crazy - mine healed itself, too. It suddenly started autoupdating my saved turns, and is working fine now.
  17. Yeah, it's strange that the Italians have the doctrine of never, ever, being separated by more than an arms length - no matter what the situation. I feel like these guys are in the circus, all cramming into a clown car or something..
  18. I'm playing CMFI using h2hh 1.5.3, and it works fine - however, it doesn't seem to be auto-updating. Not too big a deal, but I thought I'd let you know - unless of course it works fine in version 1.6. EDIT: Oh wait.. It just autoupdated lol. It didn't before though, I swear. EDIT 2: O.k., it looks like it doesn't autoupdate when I finish my turn, but it automatically updates when my opponent copies his turn into the dropbox. Normally, as soon as I hit "ok" to save the file, it does it's thing - but now I have to hit refresh to get it to go. Not like it's so hard to press the refresh button, though..
  19. I just began a PBEM with CMFI. We're playing one of the scenarios, called "Avanti". I don't know what to expect, and I'm playing as the Italians. Looks good so far, and I'm curious what I'm going to run into as I head off on the attack. The thing that struck me in the first turn, is that the Italian voices sound like they are recorded in a hallway, or a bathroom or something. Really poor recording quality, and certainly not immersive. Very surprised they sound so bad. I'll be looking forward to a sound mod that hopefully fixes this.
  20. Too bad you don't have smoke. If they keep dropping and cowering when you give them orders, just give the a hide command and wait it out. In the meantime, of course, you gotta get some fire down on the guys shooting at the house. Usually, if they are on the first floor, I go fast out the back door and hide behind the house - then slow out of there, or sprint across to more cover. If I'm on the 2nd floor, I go slow downstairs and out the back and hide. It tires them out going slow, but they'll stay hidden while moving.
  21. Welcome. Play the game for a while first, then start browsing the mods. I have all vehicles modded, terrain, sound, and UI - so basically everything. The only downside is that it takes longer to load a game, but oh well. Playing against a human is MUCH MUCH more challenging and rewarding than playing the AI. I love playing PBEM games, and I spend lots of time watching replays from every angle, analyzing everything, and really caring about my forces. When I play the AI, it's not nearly so involving for me. Humans are so much more unpredictable and clever, and every game is different.
