  1. Sure the Brits would use the word 'ridge' for the type of feature you described. Cameron Ridge at Keren is similar AFAIK. However the Brits also knew a small rise in the ground near El Alamein as Ruweisat Ridge when it was merely a low hill. To add to your confusion, they called another Alamien feature Kidney Ridge, which was fair enough when viewed on a map because of its shape. However when troops arrived there they found it was actually a depression! Despite this minor detail, and in the good old British tradition of eccentricity, the name Kidney Ridge stuck. So in short they called many and various features 'ridges', and the feature you describe could certainly be included. [Edit] typo. [ May 10, 2004, 11:57 AM: Message edited by: Pheasant Plucker ]
  2. I wish I could remember his name but the Italian general at the battle of Ghirba ought to be mentioned. When his large motorised column was threatened by some British armoured cars he gave the order for everyone to stop, dismount and form square in the middle of an open plain. Oddly enough a square of infantry against armoured cars turned out to be a rather bad idea...
  3. The current rarity setup in our experience unbalances CMAK QBs unless anticipated. In the early war the Brits almost always get very cheap Matildas (on Variable) and in the mid-late war the Germans get very cheap Tigers. We usually agree before that both types are not purchasable because they will ruin the game. One other last rule use if we are playing early war is to ban 20mm ATRs and AA guns - especially for the Italians who can buy AA guns at @ just 15 points each  These ATRs and AA guns in CMAK will shred Cruisers, whereas in my reading I can't recall it being such a problem. With a 20mm ATR/Gun and Matilda ban in place you can get a reasonable and balanced game with the commonly seen combination of Cruisers v's PZIIIs or M13s.
  4. One new option which I would prefer to see above all others is for rolling artillery barrages. Restricting batteries to continually pound the same point of the map during pre-planned bombardments is frustrating. I'm sure most people here know how important rolling barrages became during the war. Shouldn't be that difficult to do, strike one preset area on turn one, lift and move to the next preset area on turn two etc.
  5. Cheers JonS, that second link was one of 'em. The first one doesn't seem to work at the moment. Anyway thanks for your help
  6. OK thanks anyway Michael, it was a long shot. IIRC there were only two posts on it, and it's seemingly so insignificant that the forum search engine can't spot it. Back to Googling!
  7. Michael - while you get stuck into the Russian tactics experts, can you remember a thread you started and I chipped into with some websites containing TO&Es? Searching hasn't found it, and I lost my 'favourites' in a system crash. A long shot but just in case....
  8. What's wrong with that picture? Looks perfectly normal to me. My copy of Combat Misson Arrows Kaleidoscope has given me hours of fun.
  9. Hmmm, a further investigation definitely confirms what you guys are saying, and unfortunately it seems to me that the British Infantry Battalion is royally screwed up. Wasps become available in Feb '45 at which point the cost of an Inf Btn drops by 50% (because the Wasps are not 500 points each ) However, from Dec '44 to Jan '45 inclusive the Brits are left without the chance of purchasing a vanilla Inf Btn because of the Wasp problem. Both Inf Btn '44s and Inf Btn '45s are affected by this. Secondly, the Brits do not get the chance to purchase an Inf Btn '44 until November '44, they are smitten by the Wasp problem, and almost immediately superceeded by the Inf Btn '45 in January '45. Prior to November '44 the only option is to purchase an Inf Btn '43, this doesn't seem right. Thirdly the plague of flamethrower teams which inflate the price of the Battalions affects both '44s and '45s. Perversely there are no flamethrower teams at all in any of the Engineering companies  ISTM that logically the FT teams need taking out of the Infantry Battalions and adding into the Engineers. A search of previous threads doesn't help, so any chance of some of the boards resident grogs commenting? A summary: <= Oct '44.....Inf Btn '43 only available. Nov '44.....Inf Btn '43 & Inf Btn '44 available* Dec '44.....Inf Btn '44 available* Jan '45.....Inf Btn '44 & Inf Btn '45 available** Feb '45.....Inf Btn '44 & Inf Btn '45 available*** *....... Wasp problem rules out purchasing '44s **...... Wasp problem rules out purchasing '44s + '45s ***.... Wasp problem goes away Suggested fixes FWIW : A) Resolve Wasp cost problem Reschedule '44 Inf Btn availablility C) Move FT teams out of '44 and '45 Inf Btns, and into the Engineer Co's. Thoughts appreciated. [ March 29, 2004, 08:51 AM: Message edited by: Pheasant Plucker ]
  10. Similar to the US Engineers problem which IIRC was fixed in the patch, this time it's the '44 British Infantry battalion which is ruled out of purchasing by vastly inflated prices for attached AFV's (Wasps) - I don't know if the game will be patched further, but would submit that as a stock infantry battalion should be a common purchase option it is worth addressing. While I'm here I'm also curious to know - did all those flamethrower teams really get used by the Brits as a generic part of their platoons? They are a pain (and an expensive one) to use in CMAK. Thanks.
  11. Hi guys - could anyone please be kind enough to post a link for this new driver? All I'm getting on the official site is the old one and google hasn't turned up anything. Mind you, I have been taking my extra strong stupid pills lately...
  12. and not necessarily in that order! Many thanks Madmatt and Schrullenhaft for the very quick response. I'm off to sort my CD cases out but I will return to collect 'The Most Embarrasing Post On The Tech Support Forum 2004' award...
  13. Having just upgraded my system I am attempting to reinstall CMAK the CDV version. It does not Autorun when inserted into the drive which is odd because my other software does. I have checked the readme file on the CDV disk and also the troubleshooting guide on this site and both suggests browsing to a setup.exe file. Unfortunately this doesn't help as there is no setup.exe file. There is a silent.exe file which when double clicked upon appears to do nothing at all. That is the only .exe file on the disk. If anyone can help me reinstall one of my favourite games it will be much appreciated. Hopefully then I can get around to finishing my Beda Fomm scenario after 3 months [Edit] to add - using Windows XP Pro and this screenie of the CMAK CDV file layout may help: [ March 16, 2004, 10:15 AM: Message edited by: Pheasant Plucker ]
  14. Hi Martin, I hadn't noticed the BFC booklist until your post so many thanks for that, there are a few that I own and many I would like to own. It should cover my holiday reading for the next few years or so However, it's made me want to ask about whether BFC are comfortable recommending an author such as David Irving, and to a lesser extent Paul Carrell. I guess that someone at BFC has read the books in question, that they are clear from ideological sub-texts, and that they are primarily military history works and very valuable for that? I personally have an informed choice. I know that whatever their literary worth, by purchasing one of their works I am contributing in a very small round-about way to the estate of a holocaust denier or an ex-nazi propagandist. However I guess that quite a few wouldn't know, and may think twice if they did know. Would it be worthwhile to put a sort of caveat emptor note by their works for anyone who might be uncomfortable purely on moral grounds?
  15. The penetration model for the PIAT still needs a look please. IIRC someone else has mentioned that bazookas are also ineffective. Pre-patch I hit an L3 with three PIAT bombs in a row and it drove off unconcernedly. Three bombs going off in something smaller than most cars should be somewhat noticable. Post patch I have now just hit a 251/1 halftrack with four PIAT bombs in rapid sucession and it simply reversed away
  16. Seems like we're getting close to a patch so I don't know if this is too late, but I spotted much oddness while trying to purchase US armoured engineers for a QB. Seems like someone has dropped an extra 0 into the halftrack price cost (390 points each!). Excuse the split format caused by my free image hoster. Also, has the large US platoon HQ size issue been caught?
  17. More info available in this thread. There was approximately a quarter of a million Italian troops in East Africa. The British needed to clear them out quickly to get free passage of the Red Sea, which allowed them to run convoys unmolested to Egypt.
  18. Mmmm, errrrrr, - I reloaded the same game and the STUG IV now has just one gun  If it is a bug then it's an intermittent one.
  19. STUG IVs seem to have two main guns  They have the same ammo layout as a Lee/Grant. Umm...feature or bug?
