  1. LOL, you're your own biggest fan. This third party agrees it is a good idea though.
  2. Honestly I don't see how/why this problem still exists in version 3.0 of the engine...
  3. But that wasn't his argument, he does not say that no one uses MG42 anymore, but that they kept using maxim-type guns long after they could have switched to MG42 derivatives if they wanted to.
  4. Frankly it is difficult to find the motivation to even think about the results of your test and it's implication, if any, until you post the detailed set up and methodology for your test. Off the top of my head I'm not sure that looking to see how much ammo was expended to kill 600 men proves anything particularly important--why do you contend that this important? Personally I would expect an MG with a higher rate of fire to expend more ammo. And how many times did you run this test?
  5. Actually I haven't seen this "lot of people" in this thread. I think the point is that showing performance on a firing range is pointless when we are taking about combat performance.
  6. I don't recall that the FO arrives very late. Again, IIRC, he arrives with the battalion commander and is in a jeep.
  7. I'm not in front of the game but IIRC an FO shows up as a reinforcement and can fire the 122s.
  8. Oh gee, someone says something controversial or maybe is acting in an obnoxious manner--let's ban him!! Even if the content of this thread does not conform to someones's sanitized view of the "jolly good, old boy" backslapping that should take place on this forum, what possible grounds is there for banning JasonC? In general, and without reference to the content of this thread, he has added a lot to the community over the years.
  9. hmmm, I'm curious which avenues of approach would be better...I had tanks on the left flank and the right flank, but the Panthers appeared on the high ground in front of my left flank and quickly wiped out that force, and then proceeded to destroy many of the tanks all the way over on the right flank (although I think the PIVs got a few of those). If anything, I would think that attacking up the center would be even worse, because it would be right into the PIV's and give the Panthers plenty of flank shots, and I don't recall any bridges or fords there anyway.
  10. So I am the only one to play this as Russian?? *********SPOILER****************** While I don't claim to be a good player, this one doesn't seem very balanced to me for the Russians--the Panthers just mop the floor with the T34s. Despite the fact that I had most of my T34s deployed in a woodline, most of them were spotted and killed by the Panthers before they'd even fired. After the game, I was suprised by the number of German games on the board--looks like about ten Panthers and a dozen or so PIVs...that's a lot of panzers, almost as many tanks as I had. The Panthers, however, kept attacking and I was eventually able to kill almost all of them (which was immobilized in the middle of a field but which seemed invisible to my tanks--none of them could spot it). The PIVs, however, were deployed in overwatch on the heights and they picked off the remaining T34s one by one--generally the T34s couldn't even see them, other than the few that blundered down to cross the bridge. Not to mention the AT guns... If I were to replay this one as Russian (although I probably won't), I guess I would take the first couple of objectives and then sit on defense and let the German AI try to attack over the bridges and through the woods. But that wasn't the mission assigned to me... The other alternative, which would certainly be more fun, but which I don't think would end very well, would be to just push the Russian tanks forward, ignoring the objectives, and try to put them right on top of the entry point for the German tanks. But that sounds pretty gamey, and might not work anyway depending on the timing of the German tanks' arrival.
  11. GaJ, I can only pay via the PayPal app (long story); can you provide your paypal addy so I can pay via the app instead of via the link on your site?
  12. *******SPOILER********* And I thought it was German for sledgehammer... Playing as Russians, things were going great until suddenly they weren't...probably 1/2 my tanks wiped out in a few turns, and as far as I can tell I've inflicted negligible losses on the arriving German tanks. I'm down in the river valley, with the German tanks up above, don't see much hope for success. Any pointers from the Russian side? The only thing I could see would be to revert to the defensive before descending down into the valley and wait for the Germans to come at me, but even that would be dicey since the Panthers could probably use their range advantage to wipe me out...
  13. I don't understand what you're saying above--why are you trying to balance JS2s vs T34s, and Tiger IIs vs Panthers? I would think you'd be trying to balance JS2s vs Tiger IIs,s and T34s vs Panthers? Also, I thought that the standard points, ie, without rarity, were generally intended for this purpose? For example, in quick battles, a KT is worth 413, a Panther A is worth 361, a JS2 is worth 341, and a t34/85 is worth 254.
  14. I am a big fan of showing the casualties. Otherwise I can't know how many losses each unit has suffered during the battle, which affects morale, etc.
  15. I'm not in front of the game right now but aren't those off-map mortars? I think you have one battery of off-map mortars and three spotters. I guess if one mortar fires long enough it will fire the whole battery's ammo load.
  16. I don't think it really matters that bullets "travel a long way" unless the maneuver element is bounding right in front of the overwatch element, which wouldn't make much sense, since then the overwatch element couldn't fire on the enemy without firing through the maneuver element. Of course I can see what you're saying if the "maneuver" element is suppressed before it has really even started to move, and so there is really no separation between the two elements. However, even in that event the overwatch element is not suppressed just because the maneuver element is suppressed, but because the overwatch element itself is being suppressed by the same fire. Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying here...
  17. Agreed, although no big deal--I would guess it might require more programming time than it is worth to resolve. But we'd better not prattle on like this or someone will accuse us of not understanding what is going on...
  18. I'm not sure why you've assumed I (or someone else?) don't understand what's going on? The point is that the elements are maneuvering in a "coordinated fashion", not simultaneously. If the maneuver element is fired upon and suppressed, the "appropriate action" for the overwatch element would be to fire on the defender, and not to assume the same suppressed state as the manuever element. Is that really controversial? And I've never said it was a bug, indeed, I don't think that it is.
  19. eh? He is not talking about the "guys out maneuvering in the open", but the overwatch element. It is not immediately obvious why the overwatch element should be considered suppressed when the maneuver element has gone to ground, especially when this is not the case if you split the squad into separate teams. This sure seems to be a programming issue, since generally all members of a squad should share the same suppression state, and it is probably not worth "fixing" for this one instance when a player can simply split teams to avoid it. But that doesn't mean that patronizing language ("deal with it") is called for...
  20. I'd be all for being able to deploy 88s in game, but I don't think it would end well most of the time. Even if the gun can be deployed in two minutes or whatever, I think that on most maps, they'd never get a chance to deploy because the prime mover would be blown away before the gun was able to deploy. As mentioned, most maps are less than two km across, and if you're trying to deploy an 88 while the enemy was within 2 km, I think you're screwed. For this to really work, you would need to create special maps/scenarios to allow the 88s to set up and then let the enemy come to them--maps 4-5 kilometers wide. From my experience with normal AT guns in CMRT, trying to move them and set them up during a battle usually does not end well, and I don't think 88s would be any different...
  21. Actually, no, not everyone wants a game where Nazis can be kicked. Some want a game where they are invincible...some (most on this forum?) want a game where the strengths and weaknesses of both sides are reflected as accurately as possible. While I'm sure we can argue about whether this weapon system (or entire army!) is under-modeled or over-modeled, I don't think it is correct or fair to suggest that Battlefront tweaks the modelling to sell more games. In fact, I think it is kind of ridiculous to suggest this...
  22. Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but as far as I can tell you're suggesting that the German troops (including of course the vaunted SS!) modeled more weakly than they should be because there are no Nazis (ie, "the nation behind it") to tell Battlefront how it should be....really??
