  1. Gentlemen, I will not be offended that you have forgotten, but for those who use a Mac you will find only one mod manager--MacModganizer--found here: Pavlov's CM Page It used to be at CM Mod Database. I'd check on that but I'm at work and I have to go because the boss is coming this way. . .
  2. I know I tried that when I was working on a flag mod. One of the soviet flag slots never shows up in the game as far as I could tell. Don't remember which one it was though.
  3. BTW, I should add here, you need to also pay attention as to whether your opponent is dug in. This makes a big difference. When a gun or infantry are dug in, they are very difficult to dislodge. If the gun is in woods or scattered trees, try mortar fire because tree bursts might be more effective than direct fire in some cases.
  4. The issue of infantry response to direct fire was improved in CMBB and CMAK. The general feeling is that CMBO does not model human behavior under fire very well. I am pretty sure that the changes in infantry behavior were also applied to gun crews. In other words, in CMBB & CMAK soldiers are more likely and more quickly going to go to ground or panic and run for that matter when fired upon, especially when fired on by heavy weapons. As to your second question, we will have to wait for a grog to show up.
  5. That's one strategy. Myself, I never use OS X; why? because it doesn't run Combat Mission, of course! (besides which I have no intention of buying all new versions of all the other classic software I still use) My 15-year-old son, who is always updating his computer to the latest version of OS X (i.e., Panther, now the latest version is Tiger [someone should ask Steve Jobs why he names his OS after German tanks]) says I am a dinosaur. But, I like my old OS 9 and it is friendly to CM. I laugh whenever my son spoils his computer with the latest beta OS X and has to reload everything.
  6. Thank you for your response Denwad. That certainly puts those questions to rest. However, it leads to a third question: is it possible IRL to disable a Tiger with a single grenade? And, if so, how? I presume that it is by the simple fact that CM allows it to happen. I remember soon after I purchased CMBO, in one of my first games, a Red Devil in Arnhem managed to knock out a Tiger that was situated on top of the bridge by throwing a grenade--from the ground level no less. I suppose this is pushing the game mechanics somewhat as it has been said that CM is modeling an individual actually running up to the tank rather than actually lobbing the thing as it appears to do. That being said, I am still left to wonder where the soldier would place the grenade so that it would knock out a Tiger?
  7. Hmm. This leads me to wonder: (1) can a grenade fit easily through the driver's slit on a Tiger and (2) why were these expensive and crucial vehicles not equiped with periscopes for the driver, or for that matter, were they? I don't think they were because I remember Forest Gump firing his Thompson through the Tiger's driver's slit in Saving Private Ryan.
  8. Bravo! Your opponant will surely need treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder for years to come. This thread makes for a good read: The liberally expounded advice from wise old war gamers; the comradely esprit de grognard; the tense and richly described battles. . .it makes me feel all warm inside like the day my father first brought home the Avalon Hill D-Day box game when I was maybe 11 years old. Thanks again to BTS and BFC for making it possible.
  9. Yeah, okay, I took a look at that thread. It does seem to be a vram issue. I have an ATI Rage card with only 8 mb VRAM. But to repeat what others have also noted, CMBB runs on my system with no problems. If this is an issue of downsampling versus blacked-out textures I think downsampling may be the lesser evil. I know that some complained bitterly about the downsampling issue in CMBB, but for the record, I was not one. Perhaps BTS will consider this dilemma in a future patch? I have always commended BTS for designing software that runs well on both low end and high end systems, something the big name companies simply do not care to do. I hope this tradition continues. Not everyone can go out and buy a new computer every couple of years. Cordially, David (pavlov)
  10. What's with these black textures? I am running the demo on an iMac 450 megahertz with some one hundred and ninety-some RAM. OS 9.2.2 CMBO and CMBB run fine, no problem. Are the textures missing or can my computer not handle the CMAK graphics? Is this problem likely to occur after emptying my bank account to buy the full version? What do you think? Thanks in advance.
  11. The MacModganizer is now improved and bug-free, thanks in large part to the dedicated beta testing of DawgBonz3. * It is now fully functional even on systems that can't manage a full backup of the BMP folder (out of pity for F. Knives, poor sap). * No tedious manipulation of file names to make them 'compliant.' * Easily compare the mod BMP image with the installed version and the backup version simultaniously. * Install/uninstall single bitmaps or whole schemes at the press of a button. Exclusive for Mac OS Classic and now available for download at:
  12. Sorry, not much I can do about that problem, but I did alter the "install" buttons to allow you to install even if you don't have a backup folder--but, of course, you won't be able to uninstall. You might think about browsing Ebay or Small Dog for used and refurbished storage devices. Anyway, I think I'll be done clearing out the bugs by the end of next weekend. I'll post here when the release version is available.
  13. Done. And, BTW, I already have a 14-year-old son and don't really need another. But thanks for the offer anyway!
  14. Should work equally well on CMAK. Its just a matter of selecting the appropriate BMP folders from the application.
  15. Introducing the MacModganizer. http://pacificcauldron.netfirms.com/pavlov/pavlov.html I'd be grateful if one or two people would give the Beta version a shot and let me know how it runs. ETA for the full release version is one to two weeks. No "special" (read as tedious) file naming requirements like that other mod manager for those other computers. It should be easy to use. Gives a preview of mod files and comparison of current installed file and default/backup file. PC version: yeah right. All you PC users can suck it
  16. Splendid craftsmanship. Hands down the BEST mod work I've seen. BTW, weren't you working on several Tiger mods some time ago? Did you finish? Are they available for download somewhere?
  17. That's one of my favorite battles. Its one of the first I played after buying the full version of CMBO. It is definately a hard battle as Allies vs. AI. (its also tedious because it is so big and long). I thought I'd lost the battle midway through with so many tanks knocked out trying to cross that bridge, but I ended up with a minor victory afterall. As you can see, there are only two main approaches to the town for your armor. That rather limits your options.
  18. That's a rare statement from a game engineer these days. I buy it--and I will I don't mind shelling out a few bucks for good work and all the user support you guys have put into it. For Macintosh (at least) there's no competition anyway. My only request: When Bill Gates comes knocking, put that T34 in your garage to good use! Microsoft has assimulated and destroyed many a good software producer.
  19. What's the use? Hiding is futile once you give away your position. The only situation where I could see it being effective is when you have a lone AFV in LOS with no support of any kind. That's rare (in my experience anyway) even against the AI. Nice thought though
  20. Bah, what about the long-wished-for fix for Commonwealth helmets?! (answers self: NO). I'm sure BTS coding efforts are being put toward CMAK and CM2 at this point.
  21. IMHO, no. The Soviet defenses in that battle were very deep, multiple lines going back for many miles; the defenses were well prepared; and the scale of the battle was such that the numbers of paratroopers the germans could insert would probably have been insignificant. Part of the reason for this situation is that the Soviets knew the attack was coming. It was an obvious strategy to cut off the salient, Hitler kept postponing Zitadelle giving the Soviets time to build up and dig in, and, additionally, the Soviets had high level espionage that basically gave them the plan and the exact date of the offensive. In fact the Soviets launched bombing raids of German airfields the morning of the planned offensive in order to spoil the Luftwaffe's attack. Although the Soviet bombing raids were not altogether successful, they would likely have disrupted an airborne mission from the German side. In any case, Goring had so mismanaged things by that point it is doubtful they had the resouces to launch a sizeable assault. My 3 cents.
  22. I don't know about the East Front but the Germans did launch an airborne (parachute) assault during the Ardennes Offensive. It was very dismal. Led by Colonel Von der Heydte, they jumped a day late with maybe 1,200 men. They did not achieve any significant objectives and were never relieved as planned. Only about 300 were ever regrouped after the jump, and they were surrounded by the Americans in a wooded area. Eventually they tried to make their way back to german lines in groups of three. Only about 100 men made it. Von der Heydte gave himself up to the Americans at Monschau. Addendum: That was a night drop by the way flown by many inexperienced pilots which accounts for why they were so scattered. Most of them never had a chance to reach their designated redezvous points on the Hautes Fagnes. [ August 30, 2003, 09:31 PM: Message edited by: pavlov ]
  23. Good job. I'm glad to see modders still supporting CMBO. Finally, my Germans look as good as my Americans.
