  1. You know, another thing I should say about CC2, the most irritating thing about it, that is. When playing allied, and you set up your armor in the safest starting points posible at the very margin of the safe edge of the map--then you click start--and--BAM!--one or two tanks are instantaniously knocked out even before you can move the mouse pointer off the start button. I hate that. It is the only circumstance under which I would allow myself to quit and restart a battle.
  2. I have to say one positive thing for CC2, in spite of all the criticisms stated above (which I agree with BTW so you don't need to flame me). The makers of CC2 did a great job portraying historically accurate maps. This was one of my favorite things about CC2 (in addition to being able to identify with the individual soldier). I have seen era aerial photos of a couple of these locations and they are almost identical to the CC2 maps. However, the problem with CC2 maps is that they do not match the scale of the units, either graphically or in terms of historical OOB. It always bothered me that many CC2 battles are played out with dozens of men over an area that historically involved hundreds of men. With the CM series, you can count on having a more accurate OOB but you never know what you're going to get with the map in terms of historicity--regardless of whether the scenario maker designates the battle as "historical"--afterall, one arm-chair-general's concept of historical is another's fiction. For example, I thought the CMBO Arnhem map to be fairly closely modeled on the real thing, but when I took a look at the Nijmegen map I was so disgusted with it that I never could bring myself to play the battle. Luckily with CMBB, I am so clueless about the depicted locations that I have no way of knowing if the maps are correct--therefore I am too oblivious to be bothered by it.
  3. You know, I , like any good CM fan, hate to whine. . .but, I've got to say something. It bothered me in CMBO and it bothers me in CMBB too-- It is my personal and modest opinion, qualified by the fact that I have never been on a real live battlefield, that the sounds of MG and cannon fire should not be drowned out by tweety birds and the pitter patter of rain. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this? I haven't been in the military like many of you, but I grew up in Oregon--I have heard the sound of rain and I have fired a gun before--and in my experience, the sound of even a small calibre weapon is a heck of a lot louder than the ambient background sound. Just thought I'd mention it.
  4. Funny that you mention it. I worked on this obsessively for two weekends in a row. I even called in sick to work one day because I stayed up too late the night before. And in the midst of it I discovered that I can't reinstall the original CMBB files because my CD is apparently defective. Anyway, the Quick Battle screen is the last thing I considered doing, but finally decided against it because I couldn't find the background file even after opening and checking thousands of bitmaps (what a pain--I don't suppose someone out there has an index?) besides which I was feeling rather burnt out on the project. At this point I do have a Quick Battle title mod and I'll gladly email it to you if you absolutely must have it, but I still can't locate the background file.
  5. Here is just a sampling of what you get: Available at CM Mod Database (as usual) Please report any glitches to ddodson@earthling.net (Unfortunately I can't double check that I have all the files included because I am having some technical problems reinstalling the standard BMP folder) This is not a -total- GUI mod, just what I've had the patience to deal with. It does not include the control interface on the game play panel. This is commonly modified in any case, so one could probably find something compatible. I find it far too tedious to be worth the effort, and I think the original does not look so bad. Best if used in conjunction with the Soviet Anthem startup music (not included). The maker of Red Victory GUI does not intend or imply support for Stalinism, totalitarianism, or waving flags enthusiastically on the ledges of tall buildings without a safety harness.
  6. GDI I guess I spoke too soon. The CMBB game crashes immediately after starting (Type 2 Error). It seems that not all the files installed correctly. And now, the installer keeps stalling again regardless of what system folder i'm using. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
  7. It seems the the CMBB installer on the Mac CD may not work properly with v. 7 of the Stuffit engine. I bought CMBB a couple weeks ago. It installed the first time with no problem. I had Stuttit v. 6 installed at the time. Since then, I installed Stuffit v. 7. Then, yesterday I tried to reload CMBB (due to excessive and impulsive modding) but the installer kept stalling and would not finish. Finally, I reverted to an older system folder using the version 6 Stuffit engine and CMBB installed fine on the first try.
  8. Dudes, I am seriously bummed. I am on a Mac and I can't do anything with this .exe file. I tried opening it on Virtual PC but it kept crashing over and over. Maybe someone will be kind enough to post a Mac accessable version?

  10. I coincidentally developed an interest in the Eastern Front when I saw the first teaser for Enemy at the Gates. I found the book of the same name and was quite drawn in. It is a good book and I recommend it. I was somewhat disappointed by the movie, but then I heard about the planned release of CMBB and was very excited. I received my copy of CMBB less than a week ago.
  11. Okay, dudes, this is my first posted mod, check it out! Two new mainscreens to choose from, one with matching buttons. Both can be found here: CM Mod Database
  12. Hmm. What the heck do the chinese have to do with it I wonder?
  13. For what its worth, I'll still be playing CMBO for awhile anyway and I hope there'll be a few others at least. I'm a bit ethnocentric myself (see sig) but I find the eastern front to be very interesting anyway (see username). My main reason for sticking to CMBO for the time being is simply because the IRS has taken an interest in my bank account and I ain't gunna shell out 45 clams right at the moment.
  14. Speaking of translations, I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned this, and far be it for a mere member number 9222 to complain, but. . . The english in CMBO leaves something to be desired. The briefings are full of strange grammar and idiosyncratic spellings. It seems all the stranger that the author's native tongue is apparently english. I suppose if you start with a flawed document, then translate it, you are bound to end up with some curiosities. I hope CMBB was better proof read, but in any case I'm sure it wont keep it from being a great game.
  15. Regarding the german infantry in Russia: "It is they who made the river crossings: the Memel, the Bug, Prush, Narev, Pripet, Stry and Dneister. These they crossed. Often swimming stark naked with only light weapons in their hands to open the path for those who come behind."* Anyone want to volunteer to mod that uniform? * James Lucas, War on the Eastern Front: The German Soldier in Russia, 1979
  16. Umm, okay guys, this should settle the CM3 question, two words: Channel Islands!
  17. Ahah! So your right Firefly. I had become so frustrated with indirect mortar fire myself that i had completely given up on it--decided it was nothing but empty propaganda.
  18. Next CM: Italy? Africa? Norway??
  19. See above for reason number 4633 why the USA is a political and intellectual backwater, and down right moronic to boot.
  20. Incidently, it is an interesting fact that fasces, to this day, decorate the interior of the United States Capitol building.

  22. Hmm, okay, and I suppose that would entail a rewrite and we could call the new version C-M- B-M [insert drums.wav]
  23. Well, here's my Member #9222 opinion for what its worth. I think most people out there (myself included) have found the demo to be good. The most noted criticism is that the demo senarios are simply not as "replayable" as CMBO's. In any case, everybody's a critic and when you have so many people waiting so long for something with baited anticipation, they are bound to find flaws when presented with the real deal. I think there is nothing you can do to stop it. No matter though. I'd bet a good portion of the critics are still planning on shelling out the dough for the full version.
  24. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing. There are a handful of vehicles that just don't seem to want to take mods. I've tried both available macintosh mod utilities with exactly the same result. When I try to load the mod, the given textures are completely erased instead of replaced. Then I end up with the "track" texture covering the whole vehicle or some parts of it. The offending vehicles being the Churchill and a couple of the german half-tracks (and I think I've now mod'ed every other vehicle in the game without any problems). I suppose its just some inexplicable and irreversable glitch, but I was hoping someone might know what to do about it. Thank god CMBB for mac appears to use straight bitmaps instead of those irritating resource files.
