Hiram can be a bit spotty sending the correct turn. I think that glorious mac he keeps blabbing about has some hand in it. I don't want to accuse him of being a complete ninny, but sometimes I think he is. -
17. SS-panzer Grenadier-Division

I read that SS Armored formations in the East, namely Viking and Totenkopf were filling out their tank battalions with StuGs because of a shortage of actual tanks in 1943-44. Also SS formations were being transfered from East to West in anticipation of the invasion, and taking most of their tanks with them. If you look at German tank production throughout the war, for the most part German industry maintained a reasonable production rate, even under air bombardment. So Waffen SS formations in the West did not initially suffer from lack of armor, they were really short of qualified infantry. -

They certainly knew which were armored formations, no? I remember a scene from "Band of Brothers" when they saw some German bodies and realized they were Fallschirmjaegers. At the grunt level they were probably never informed as to who would be on the ground that they were dropping onto, other than that they spoke German. Sometimes we, with all the knowledge and documentation we have now, assume that those people involved in those events knew as much as we think we do. -

There is an interesting quote from a 17th SS Staff Officer in the book, "The Germans in Normandy" by Richard Hargreaves, that describes air attacks by US fighter bombers on a 17th SS column moving into the Normandy area. Apparently they were not that used to being harassed like that from the air, and they finally halted their move and pulled all serviceable vehicles off the road. All the men stayed under cover. This was their first expossure to their new opponents. Allied command of the air certainly prevented adequate movement and manuever by German forces throughout the Normandy campaign. -

I think Allied planners had a pretty good idea of the disposition of German forces before the invasion. Therefore they must have known of the existence of the Waffen SS units like the 12th SS and the Leibstandarte in the Commonwealth sectors. The fact that the British and Canadians became embroiled in one pitched battle after another with high quality German units did accomplish what was either part of the initial plan or something that developed later after the invasion, keeping the German armored formations tied down, so that the American units could build up sufficiently to effect a breakout from the bocage country. -

Please lets not start the "Who did more fighting in Normandy, the US or UK/Commonwealth" argument. -

Thats for sure, all of Monty's tank heavy operations around Caen should make for some interesting encounters. Mostly against the SS I might add, and the Panzer Lehr, which in comparison to most other units in Normandy was fairly lavishly equipped. -

What problem did you anticipate with a thread title of "17th SS Panzer-Grenadier Division"? Had it been titled "CMbN, and all testers suck a big weenie" and I opened it to find a lot of mundane geekstuff, then I might have a reason to be annoyed. You testers should lighten up, sometimes folks post things because they are interested in a topic and want to discuss it with other like minded folks. -

In most of these Normandy battles the orders are issued at shouting distance. The C2 link is the sergeant shouting or giving hand and arm signals. Its not like you are getting grand strategic plans delivered over the radio. There really should be no delay for "Joe take your fire team over to the farm building and set up an OP" -

While you're at it, poke yourself, just to check if you are still capable of recognizing stimuli other than alchohol sliding down your gullet. Its been a while since you and I did battle, send me a scenario set up, I'll play any side. -

I don't know where you got your brains, Sergeant - God must have given you that pair of eyes. They're Arapahos, alright. Headin' the same way we are. Now why would they be movin' on Sudrow's Wells, Sergeant? Answer me that. My mother didn't raise any sons to be makin' guesses in front of Yankee captains. -

Aw, your rant wasn't half as bad as some of the stuff put up here on a regular basis, and a lot of those posters never bother with a public mea culpa. I thought I was old, brother you must have a serial number that starts with 19 or even 18. Semper Fi. -

It would be an excellent idea in practice if scenario designers could create just such a situation by having units in the assembly areas at the start of the game be in various stages of distress. It was done in the scenarios of CMx1. Of course this would not work in QBs, but other work arounds have already been discussed here and could be agreed uppon by the players before starting a game. -

MrSpkr Family problems can be the worst, but you must deal with them sometimes. The little kid is important, he needs the support you are giving. -

Mormons...Schmormons, Have you noticed over the years how Hollywood has changed the focus of war movies from hating our fellow human beings to hating bugs....I guess its easier to hate bugs, everyone hates them and they are the most populous species on our planet. Independance Day....Bugs invade the earth, we kill them all. we hate them, we scream epithets at them, and never do we feel guilty of racism, religious intolerence or the like. Attack Los Angeles....Bugs invade Los Angeles, we kill them with glee, we dismember them, poke them and eviscerate them without a care. Again no guilt, wow this is great! District 9....Bugs invade South Africa of all places, Apartheid returns,we experiment on them, but we dont care, they're bugs, however in this one we can also loathe the Nigerians with just a slight twinge of guilt. On to TV, new show Falling Skies...once again we are beset by bugs, they slaughter us by the millions, but this time they take our kids and give them opiate like drugs to control them. We hate them, we kill them when we can, we torture them, again no guilt they're bugs after all. We all hate bugs. I say forget nuclear weapons, bring back DDT!! -

I hate to be the one to tell you, but I will anyway. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge, the second largest suspension bridge in the US in fact, and employs no trusses in its design. Had you said...."I hear you employ more trusses than the Sky Gate Bridge" you would have been technically correct in that statement. Anytime I can give you a hand with the accuracy of your comebacks, just let me know.
