  1. Take this one: effective thickness = thickness/cos(PHI) PHI...angle in degree between the horizontal and normal vector of the sloped plate your example: 45mm/cos(30°)= ~52mm The trigonometrical functions are no linear functions. Therefore it's not possible to say something like 'additional x mm of effective thickness per 1 degree sloping' [ July 22, 2003, 09:02 PM: Message edited by: Schoerner ]
  2. To get a quite good impression of the scale and timing at divisional scale, i suggest you to take a look at HEARTS OF IRON. There you'll have a lot of the influences that affect strategic decisions and everything will become clearer simply by playing a game. btw: THE grand strategy game.
  3. The government of Vienna (Austria) has decided, to remove the grave of Major Walter Nowotny. It's not enough for them to take the honorary-grave away. They even want a grave-desecration. In times, when former enemys are reaching the hands over the graves of the fallen soldiers (whoever has seen this i.e. in Stalingrad, will hardly be able to suppress the tears), words are not enough to describe this kind of baseness. The biggest Austrian daily newspaper, the 'Neue Kronen Zeitung' (3 million readers per 8 million inhabitants), publishes every day a side with reader-letters. Due to the big amount of letters they receive against this barbary, they are publishing almost every day one letter dealing with the planned grave-desecration of Major Walter Nowotny. Although the 'Kronen Zeitung' has a lot of influence, all the other austrian mass-media are concealing this, including the TV-stations. As every German and Austrian knows, their 'tolerance' and 'humanity' isn't existing, if german soldiers should be treated correctly and their honor needs to be protected. The 'Kronen Zeitung' is even plublishing letters in English, so it definitely makes sense, if you would write your opinion. Here are two of them: Sogar aus Queensland This is an e-mail at the supposed removal of Nowotny's grave. I'm a person who is apolitical and has no Nazi sympathies, but I'm distressed as to why a soldier's grave should be moved. I also protest when the French government wanted to build an airport through the Commonwealth war cemetary. I feel that the resting of all soldiers are sacred. Willian Gracie, Queensland, Australia Ein Amerikaner schreibt Please do not remove the grave of Walter Nowotny. Let him rest in peace! From an American. Let bygones be bygones. Scott Graham, per e-mail For those of you, who want more information about Major Walter Nowotny, here a few data: Walter Nowotny was born in 1920. He freely joined the Luftwaffe. On September 4th 1943 he received the Oak Leaf (to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross) (Eichenlaub zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). On September 22nd 1943 the Swords of the Oak Leaf (Schwerter des Eichenlaubes zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). On Oktober 19th 1943 the Brilliants to the Swords of the Oak Leaf (Brillianten des Eichenlaubes zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). He was the highest dekorated Austrian in the Wehrmacht and only 27 soldiers received the Brilliants. Although it was forbidden to him, to fly any longer but to educate other pilots only, he preferred to fly again. Major Walter Nowotny died at the age of 24 on November, 8th 1944 due to a turbine-defection of his Me262 nearby Osnabrück. He was the winner of 258 dogfights. And he was the leader of the first jet-fighter Geschwader in history. The city of Vienna dedicated 1956 a honory-grave to him, among other things because of his success in denying strategic bomb-throws against the civilians in Vienna. It's interesting to know, that this grave is legally a soldier's grave and falls under the laws for war-graves, which are protecting in theory all fallen soldiers, no matter of the nation and confession. If a nation dishonors soldiers graves, it's definitely not a civilized one. But how should a nation be called, if it even dishonors the own fallen soldiers? Is it possible to sink any lower? It would be great, if you could write your personal opinion, about the plan to disturb the dead person-silence of this brave fallen soldier. The e-mail address is: leser@kronenzeitung.at Thank you all very much. Schoerner Ps: if someone could offer some web-space, I could include one photo of Maj. Nowotny and another one showing his grave [ July 17, 2003, 03:44 PM: Message edited by: Schoerner ]
  4. Mike, Jim, no clue what you're talking about, but prepare your yankee butts becoming kicked.
  5. Guys, do you play as good as how much you're talking BS?
  6. Seems BTS doesn't care about ATI-card users. IMO this isn't very clever.

  8. Monty, i bought a Radeon8500 mostly for CMBB when it came out. I'm so disappointed about the no-fog problem, that i'm more and more thinking about replacing it. I really miss the atmosphere fog created when i played CMBO with my old TNT2-card. Don't make to fast decisions.
  9. Most maps allow, to reduce this advantage: the defender can mass his forces, too. With some experience, it's quite good possible, to estimate the approach and attack routes and mass forces/firepower on the one or two key-positions, while the others stay ignored. The minimum an attacker against a competent defender needs, is to have at least enough time for preparing a decent attack. Still most scenarios don't give enough time for that and i agree that they are usually favouring the defender.
  10. possible SPOILER ALERT . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I don't understand the complaints: the current engine makes it even more simple than it was in reality: there are no trigger levels for AT-guns. In the current engine it is possible to trigger all AT-guns with cheap vehicles. In reality there could have been always a 76mm AT gun waiting for it's chance... (hopefully CMX2 will offer AT-trigger-levels for scenario designers). In reality such situations slow down the advance. Advancing over open terrain and you don't know what's in the woods on the other end? That is dangerous and has to be quite difficult in the game, too. It's not enough to bring a tank forward, see how it becomes knocked out and expect the overwatching tanks will do the rest. And it means there's no need to clean the area within 30 minutes. If you want to win every scenario with a total victory, then here's the right place for some rushing gamey tactics. If you prefer taking care of your men and equipment, you'll need time - too much time for a total victory in this scenario. This tactics worked for me: after losing a PzII and a 251/1 i decided it were more healthy to clean the woods first, before advancing with the other paper thin armoured vehicles. In reality you would search for a route. Here only the direct approach is possible and IMO the best way is to keep at least one flank safe -> a path on the left border of the map. So a direct route to the woods on the left with a squad in a 251/1 at full speed while all the avail. MGs and HMGs give suppressive fire to all the areas where i estimated AT positions. Once the squad was there the rest was easy (thanks to borg spotting ): the advancing squad identified the xxx and the overwatching tanks did the rest within seconds. I think it depends on how well the enemy position is identified, before the AI decides to shoot at it. It doesn't shot on every rabbit which is good IMO. 12. 1. DD's Terrain Mod (CMMOS) 2. DD's Terrain Mod 3. DD's Terrain Mod My absolute favourite is DD's terrain mod (CMMOS). I had no idea how it will look when i D/L it. On the first look i immediately saw, that i had been playing for hours a scenario at dawn. I was totally blown away. All looks so realistic. The colors are a dream. For those who want to try it: it's on CMHQ. [ June 15, 2003, 07:27 AM: Message edited by: Schoerner ]
  13. The TacAI's limitations are mostly because the AI can't remember what already happened to it. Interesting how well the AI does without memory, isn't it? It seems to be quite sure, that the new engine will give units a memory. Now imagine, when the AI's tanks go into cover, they still know, where the enemy tanks are, from which direction the shot came, where the threatened areas are and where the safe ones are... Then add to the new AI-memory the much better LOS-capabilities of the AI for finding paths and voila, the new AI will be much stronger. [ June 14, 2003, 05:24 PM: Message edited by: Schoerner ]
  14. For the realism-freaks out there: in multiplayer games the option, to block view levels higher than 1+2.
  15. Besides all the other good tasting bones, IMO this is the best news! The unbeatable experience Charles already has, combined with BTS plans and visions, will make the good things in the engine even better and the not so perfect ones disappear which fits perfectly to the evolutionary way of developing CM further. Excellent. Good luck & best wishes to all.
  16. Regarding the learning-effect, i have the following idea: audiovisual AARs (acoustically commented movie-replays). All we need for that would be the possibility to make 'movies' out of the full game replays. A videorecorder function, with cut/copy/paste and the possibility to attach zoom level and camera positions to each scene. I guess whole game replays in general will tend to be not too much of interest for other players, but a cut movie-version including only the important and most interesting scenes, enough for revealing the plans and tactics and showing the best scenes (ACTION! - hey, CMX2 will offer eye-candy, too, so why not) ? If CM would offer that, then players could record their comments and explanations for the scenes with a mic and include it as mp3 with the movie-replay. Synchronization between the movie and the explanations: all that's necessary is to start the audio file first, which is including a countdown for starting the movie within CM. Imagine a download depot, with hundreds of analyzed battles (sometimes from both sides) with all the information about the plans, how they were executed or why they failed. 17. Impossible mission, hehe. Well, is there woods on his flanks? I made the experience, that even very good players tend to become carelessly, if they feel to strong. 3 KVs is heavy, but it is always worth a try and if you make a good trap, he will lose one. With some luck the second. And then everything looks different. Problem is you don't have the forces to gain initiative. So you should try to involve him into some adventures, shouldn't you? You mentioned, he spread the KVs over the whole front. Maybe he tends to use them seperately, too... You've got Pz38 and no trucks. So you will have to use the tanks as trucks. If you can find some woods on his flank, this should be the first trap for the first KV. Try to keep the infantry hidden and move an additional vehicle there, so that his KV becomes hungry... Let your poor PSW drive around his nose, show him the side of the sleeping PSW-crew (but out LOS of the KV! ), so that he can't resist to come closer. Keep the artillery ready, to block LOS in the rear of the KV, once he has decided to come closer: it is possible that your men have to leave the wood and then they will need any cover they can get. Depends on the map, where to put the Pz38, but i could imagine that Shoot&Scoot against the other KVs, while your infantry is attacking one KV, would be not that bad. Additionally you could consider, to include another plan: hunting his smaller vehicles with your Pz38 and moving your Pz38 that way, that his KV will come closer to the woods (i.e. to protect his smaller vehicles). Just my two Pfennig.
  18. HAve you already tried DaemonTools? Maybe this helps.
  19. A very difficult situation. When purchasing units, i always take at least one with a decent gun (mostly PAK43 or 88; they are the life-savers). I usually i keep it hidden as long as possible and it comes into play, if usual tank tactics are without success: at this point, usually the enemy keeps his tanks visible, or i know at least where they are. Timing is very critical for the following, not new tactics, but usually it works: then i call in smoke from the mortars or PzIV, blocking LOS from PAK to his tanks, except the most ugly. The smoke should be placed in that way, that the enemy believes an infantry or tank attack from the wrong direction is possible and he also should be in the misbeliev, that his tanks have LOS to that estimated direction (but in the meanwhile, they are already blind ). The nest part is as usual: Shoot&Scoot with own tanks at the end of the minute to attract fire or keep the turrets rotating away from the PAK and the beast is gone... If the further use of the PAK is critical, then simultaneously dropped smoke in front of the gun usually helps to keep it alive for another tank. 20. Opens all doors for cheating. IMO the better solution is the full game replay.
  21. Trash? I tried my best to be as clear and factual as possible. Did you discover a mistake in my argumentation? If so, i would be wondering, but feel free and let me know. Otherwise i think, you just want me to become shut up, because i have a different opinion. Great attitude, Rex Inquisitor. How can you accuse anyone else, if you obviously can't respect the opinions of others?
  22. Ofcourse each one traded with each other. Why not? The USA also traded with the CCCP and had not the same system. Germany also had some kind of market economy, if you define market economy as not planned economy. If you take a look at the capitalistic monetary theories (all mainstream theories, all, without any single exception are built on economical growth!). Stagnation already means, the losing of jobs and all the theories are just caring how they could keep the economical growth as high as possible. It's hard to imagine, but every singe economist you see on western-TV or University, is only learning and teaching theories how the economical growth can become secured! How totally absurd, ill, crazy this system is, shows the 'Josephspenny' example: if Joseph lent only a single penny 2000 years ago with an interest rate of only 5%, what do you guess, how much would Joseph own today without moving only a single finger? Can you say: 23900000000000000000000000000000000000000 Pennies? This is out of imagination. Another example: Assuming an economical growth during only the last 50 years of only 2% each year, results in an 269% expanded economy. In each and every single year 2.7 times more cars, more clothes, more beef, more milk, more resources, more energy consumption than 50 years ago... If this would continue 50 years further, the economy in the year 2050 would need in only one single year 724% or 7.24 times more recources than 100 years ago. But a hairdresser can't cut more peoples hairs from year to year. The mason can't build from year to year more houses. The whole bill for productivity gain has to pay mother nature; it is pressed out of nature without any scruples and some strange politicians are always talking about peace, freedom and democracy and even more strange people are really believing the lies of such a system? Everybody can see, that such a system can only lead to total destruction. If this system is globalized, it has to lead to global destruction with thousands of millions of starving and suffering people. The western system doesn't have errors. It is the error itself. The Volume of money has to grow from year to year in such a system, because its economy is built on lent money and the capital plus interests must be payed back. This produces on one side the productivity gain, which is good. On the other hand, almost the complete production gain is eaten up by the interests of the money lenders instead of resulting in higher income or less working time. The worker's real income doesn't grow. Although a modern worker in i.e. a car-production facility, has several hundreds percent higher productivity than decades ago, he still has almost the same income and has to work almost the same time. Every year he has to produce more and more cars within the same time, while his children are already ill from the smog the cars are producing. If the interests wouldn't had robbed the productivity gain, he could produce within 10 hours, what decades ago needed 40 hours. If he would work 40 hours, he could earn 4 times more real-income, or could earn enough to life after 10 hours and spend the time better with his children and family. In the great system we have and are so proud of, a small percentage of mankind has a higher living standard, and this is mainly not because our income has grown. No. The production gain is mainly eaten up by the interests. The money-lenders earn the billions of Dollars, where every Cent was created by productive work, but ends in the wrong pockets. Our higher living standard is paid by mother nature and other exploited nations. Does the homo sapiens use his brain and get rid of those, who are praying the interest-slavery? No, he invents cars, that produce less smog, just to be able to produce even more cars. And who is elected by the democratic, clarified and mature citizens, thinking that they are much more intelligent than the people 50 years, 100, 200 or 500 years ago? They are even electing those criminals, who are promising, that the economical growth will rise much more, if they become elected. And the people in this strange time really believe, that former times were dark and evil... Therefore the only correct name: interest-slavery. And therefore it is the biggest legalized deceit in history. And one of the first actions of Adolf Hitler was to immediately leave the old, on gold and interests built, monetary system. From one day of the other, the german money had no worth per se anymore, unlike in the other economies. Money wasn't multiplying itself anymore without productive labour ('from now on our money is built on labour and sweat and nothing else'). A lot of other actions were taken and it's not really that hard to find useful info on the net, although there exists not an authentic written down theory, i.e. by Halmar Schacht. But one point, why the new economic-system of the first nationalsocialistic state became that dangerous for the capitalistic system, was because the trade was made over index-points, which was very attractive for countries, with 'weak' currencies, compared to those currencies, that were built on gold, like the Dollar. Suddenly many 'poor' countries, forced into the capitalistic monetary system (in the 1930s over 30% of all money reserves of the world in gold were stored in Fort Knox; what an enourmous power to make pressure on governments with gold-based currencies), had an alternative for free trade but with the benefits, to receive a fair 'price', meant mostly machines, for their products, instead of being forced to give their products away almost for free, because of being debtor with a weak currency. Since WWII exists no alternative; whenever we hear in TV, that WorldBank or IWF, are 'helping' a 'poor' country by giving it generously a new credit, we should remember, that they will never ever be able to pay even the interests back; this is the best deal: a 'poor' country, which is rich of resources and cannot pay back the credit; an endless flow of interests, if they cannot pay, they have to give our companies the rights for oil, for gold, for coffee,...; a war without soldiers, but an endless war with even more suffering and dying people; and before such a country collapses, again very generously, the system cancels the credit; the 'lost' money will be payed by the own citizens anyway, while the companies already had filled their bags over decades and the business continues with the next credit. Whoever with some lections in economics takes a critical look at the economies before WWII, will see, that the capitalistic systems were caught in their interest trap, while Germany over eight years had - reduced unemployment rate without increasing inflation (not possible in mainstream economy theories) to almost zero - almost no inflation (measured as buying-power) - greatly increased income of the workers and families - multiplied social welfare - reduction of foreign-depts - exploding foreign trade with countries with 'weaker' currencies (esp. South America) The capitalistic systems also had no theoretical economical explanations, how to deal with that situation. The german economical wonder is not explainable within the mainstream theories fundamentally built on interests. Ofcourse it easily is understandable, when the ominous curtain that is placed over money, economics and interests, like over a kabbalistic secret, is lifted and if money is seen again as what it really is and should be: the proportional share, how much an economical subject anticipated on the productive economy of a nation (not really good times, for money lenders and speculants), but the money has no worth per se and therefore doesn't multiply itself over time. The western system stands and falls with interest-slavery. In the past and youngest history, there have been much worse reasons for wars. If Axis would have won the war, mankind would be liberated from that most devious and deadly deceit already. [ June 06, 2003, 09:34 PM: Message edited by: Schoerner ]
