  1. Just thought I'd post my experience with the example I gave above, hiding recon tank hunter team. I have been in this situation more than once, mostly because this tactic works. I have played it both ways, with a conscience and like a mindless automaton with no fear of death. In the instances in which I have sacrificed the TH team, 90+% of the time an enemy tank was destroyed and so was the team immediately after they did their dirty work. It seems that the reality is their sacrifice allows many of their comrades to survive. One less 76mm or 85mm shelling friendly positions/armor does make a difference and after all, there were only two soldiers in that tank hunting team. It reminds me of a Splash screen mod someone had posted which had a picture of Hitler and Stalin with quotes. Stalin's quote was, "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of one million men is a statistic". In what category does the death of a two man tank hunting team fall? I'm betting Stalin might have deemed this a tragic statistic??? Or maybe a statistical tragedy??? Oh, I don't know.
  2. I read your post and like your ideas. Certainly would seem to be worth some thought on Battlefront's part. Don't know how feasible this would be for Battlefront to do. Good thinking.
  3. I'm glad to see that this thread got some feedback. Here is another example of what I'm talking about. I often use tank hunter teams as scouts when I'm playing a scenario in which I'm defending. Often times the tank hunter team does find out where the enemy armored column is coming from. The conscience comes in to the equation when the tank hunter team finds itself surrounded in a wooded area by 3 or more enemy tanks. The team is in hiding so they are no found out and probably won't be for the remainder of the scenario. They do have an excellent chance of taking one of the enemy tanks out. If they do, the other tanks will blow them to bits. Do I take out the one enemy tank and lose the team or not? Should I look at this from the two man teams point of view or from a cold hearted General's point of view? What do you do? Just curious.
  4. I'm in the process of reading a good book , "Blood Red Snow", written by an Eastern front veteran. He mentions that several of the new tank destroyers, Ferdinands, were brought to his sector and they gave the Russian armor a real pasting. He also goes on to say that the Russians tried very hard to find out what it was that was giving there armor such a hard time.
  5. I lost a Panzer IVH to a Soviet infantry squad using molotovs just recently. I know what your thinking, "What the hell is he doing letting his armor get that close to enemy infantry un-supported?". I had a Panther and a MK IV shelling a vicious infantry attack on a friendly trench line that was in jeopordy of being over-run. A fanatical Soviet infantry squad charged my panzers from the side and knocked out the MK IV with a molotov. I couldn't let the men in the trenches just die, I felt I had to do something. Does anyone else out there take on a conscience when there men are in danger of being killed? In my case, I pulled up armor a little too close in order to give support. In the past, I have also revealed hidden anti-tank or infantry guns to help take pressure off of anti-tank teams that have gotten into trouble out in front of the main line of defense. It's kind of like your unit sees that it's comrades are in trouble and refuses to stand by and do nothing while they get slaughtered. In the above case, the outcome was a major victory for my forces as the panzers had already taken out the supporting enemy armor, about 10 assorted T-34/85's and IS-2's. It was just that infantry battle against the trench line that was left and the AI just kept throwing one wave after another at it. They just had to have that trench. They did end up with the trench and my men were killed/captured that had occupied it but I made them pay a high price for that slit in the ground. Unfortunately, I lost a panzer and all the men in the trench.
  6. This is a perfect example of playing a non-historical scenario. 15 T-34/76's against 3 or 4 Ferdinand tank destroyers would have been more like it. Refuse to play with this opponent unless they realize that pitting 3 or 4 German heavies against as many T-34/76's is not very sporting and certainly not historically accurate.
  7. Thanks to all involved for these great Stug mods. I just played a scenario where I had four of these beauties under my command and I lost all four of them each to the first shot from enemy T-34/85's. They even looked great when they were burning. Miracles can happen as after I lost all of my armor, all four Stug's, I eeked out a minor victory by giving his infantry a vicious beating with my infantry. Great mods! Thanks
  8. I've been seeing the term: "SPOILER ALERT" used in many different threads. Anyone care to enlighten me as to it's meaning? Thanks in advance.
  9. Welcome to the Eastern front. I have not played this scenario but it sounds like an interesting puzzle. It certainly sounds like the odds are historically accurate. Not having seen the map, it sounds like the key to this engagement is ensuring that the Nashorns engage the T-34's only when they are equal in number or have numerical superiority. Those of you that have played the scenario, Is this possible using terrain features or smoke? Anyone agree/disagree? I think when I get home from work, I will fire this scenario up. Is this scenario historical? If so what was the outcome? Can't wait to take a crack at it.
  10. These websites sell uniforms and equipment for re-enacting. You should be able to find a hat on one of them: 1944militaria.com Atthefront.com Landser.com Lostbattalions.com Good luck.
  11. I thought my recent upgrade to a 21" Sony Trinitron monitor was good. This puts my monitor to shame. That really must be great. I'm happy for ya.
  12. I'm currently playing "Diablo II". A little old but I just got it recently for my birthday. I also received "Day of Defeat". This game looks like a fun first person shooter but it appears as though you can only play on-line. Before Combat Mission I was playing alot of Panzer Commander, Steel Panthers, and Talon Soft's East Front. Where can you get "Wizard of Wor"? I remember playing this in the arcade when I was a kid.
  13. Schrullenhaft, Good job! I've seen many of your responses to people having trouble and your advice is invaluable. Take care.
  14. I haven't used the Ferdinand tank destroyer much although it is one of my favorite vehicles. I did download a mod for it.

  16. GenSplatton, Without going into too much detail, I would purchase CMBB. The game engine is more realistic than the game engine in CMBO. JMHO. I really don't play CMBO much anymore. I'm really looking forward to CMAK so that I can play both Italy and the West Front with a game engine more in line with the one found in CMBB. Don't know what your financial situation is but if you enjoy gaming and have the extra cash, pull the trigger on a CMBB purchase. Again, just my opinion.
  17. I would definitely download one of the versions you show here. Good stuff!
  18. Well... I got the Chaintech GeForce Ti4600 card with 4XAGP and after installing it as expected it works great with the 30.82 drivers. Bye-bye alt-tab.
  19. Phil, This new system of yours sounds awesome. Good luck with it.
  20. Michael Dorosh, After being away for the weekend I just saw your last post and was shocked. What are you doing making a demeaning comment like that? I thought about taking this offline because it seems to me, after seeing your last post, that this has somehow gotten personal. We can play one up-manship all day long on the Battlefront forum. I have an opinion and so do you. I don't have any problems with people who have opinions other than my own. I didn't feel that my last post warranted such an abrasive, demeaning reply. For all that it's worth, your probably right about this MP44 topic. After your last post I no longer care about the topic at all. I stated before that I don't have any problems with people having differing opinions. I don't. In fact many people that know me think that I am one of the easiest guys to get along with. What I do have a problem with is people throwing disrespectful comments around while hiding behind the internet. As for capacity for critical thought, it was your argument that went from intellectual discourse to having to degrade me as a person. It seems to me that your critical thought capacity is the one that's on empty.
  21. Sounds to me like you fellas are back at the rifle range. Weren't you telling me two or three posts ago that the battlefield isn't the rifle range? Guys...YOU'RE CONTRADICTING YOURSELVES! I'm leaving for the weekend. It's been great. God Bless.
  22. I think that you may be a little pumped up on this example of a British infantry unit having some success with bolt action rifles. Are you basing your opinion on the topic on an individual firefight as opposed to the general concept of being able to throw more lead at the enemy with semi-auto/full-auto weapons? I'm gonna fall back on my last post here and ask the obvious question, "why does every modern day army in the world issue assault rifles to their infantry?" Wouldn't the German Army of WWII have benefited from this as well? There have already been posts to this thread stating that there were many other factors including armor superiourity, artillery superiourity, air superiourity, etc. These other factors obviously weighed heavily against the German infantry but to say that putting an assault rifle in the hands of the majority of the German infantryman on the battlefield would not have helped the Germans is, I'll use one from Michael Dorosh, laughable.
  23. Icm1947 - Just curious, what types of Allied tanks are knocking out the Tigers when you play? Generally, when I run across a Tiger on the CMBO battlefield, my favorite tactic is to rush it frontally with two or three Stuarts. I might lose one but the other one or two are bound to take it out with a "Frontal Penetration at Weak Point". Then I just laugh and laugh until I stop.
