  1. I've got a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy Gamer card. Works good for me. I also have the Creative Labs 5.1 surround speaker system. I have never had any problems or complaints with this combination in regards to any application on my PC. Combat Mission sounds great with this card/speaker combo.
  2. These mods are very good. I will be downloading these. Good work kamerade!
  3. Your right. I do have an attitude problem. I just don't understand it. No matter how hard I try, I can't get along with most of the people who post messages to this forum. But you'll have to admit, I haven't called anyone any names yet. In any case, thanks to everyone for the feedback which, Hansson so kindly pointed out, I did ask for.
  4. Sorry. I reread my last response and found it also to be a little on the aggressive side. I apologize. Without using too many quotes here, Someone mentioned knocking down buildings to obtain a line of site. I don't see that as "gamey" at all. I can easily see this being done in order to get to the enemy units that are known to be behind such buildings. I have done this myself. I don't want to expend a tank by exposing it and I know that the enemy unit that has been giving my men a real hard time is behind a particular building. I don't see this as gamey. Also, someone else responded about their definition of gamey being to exploit a flaw in the game engine. Ok. I guess my definition is a little different. I see gamey as doing anything the game engine allows that takes a great strategy/simulator and turns it into a "game". To further clarify my point, I am talking about this situation being done as a sort of "rule of thumb". In other words, me as a player, the first thing I always do if I have a few tanks and I'm on the attack, is pull them up and blow up every building, whether or not there is a reason to. I hope that I have made this clear for everyone interested in this thread at this point.
  5. I guess that kinda depended on the year for the Germans. Artillery barrage on the town/village to prep the area before sending bodies in. I stated this. Wow! Startling revelation here. Wow! Another startling revelation. Do the real AAR's of US forces go on to say that it's the tankers job to, "knock down every house in the town/village"? As a matter of course, do you play this way every game? When I say this way, I mean, pull up a couple of tanks and blow up every house on the map in the enemies zone of defense. Doesn't this get old after a while? As you can hopefully tell by my response, you have not convinced me in any way shape or form that this is/was a realistic tactic. You have convinced me that this is how YOU play Combat Mission when you have armor and are attacking a town/village.
  6. Not sure what your point is here. Personally, I think the practice, I really would rather not call it a tactic, is ridiculous and gamey. I agree wholeheartedly. Furthermore, would a tank commander not take into account that if he expends his ammunition on destroying buildings that there will be none left to defend the infantry he is supposed to be supporting or his own vehicle should it come under attack during the battle? You mentioned war crimes. I had to laugh when I read this, especially after reading the US soldiers response above. I can see it now, the Mogilny's are just sitting down in their hovel for a meal when suddenly Schwere Abteilung 502 tops the rise and blows their whole village to kingdom come, using 75% of it's ammo in the process, not even realizing that the enemy is on the other side of the map (LOL). Anyone ever heard of Oradour Sur Glane? I think the little town was left in it's destroyed state as a sort of horrific monument. I suppose one could design a scenario about squashing the Polish uprising and one of the objectives would be to demolish every building in the Warsaw ghetto. I haven't seen that scenario yet and I sincerely doubt that the original poster of this thread is describing his opponents demolition tanker practice in such a scenario. Some of you are saying that to reduce to rubble every building on the map is not gamey but I can't see it. It takes a perfectly good WWII strategy/simulator and reduces it to the level of some sort of pointless building smash-up derby.
  7. So what your saying is, it isn't gamey to pull up your tanks/tank destroyers/self-propelled howitzers and specifically target EVERY building in a village or town, not knowing if there are enemy units in it, and systematically blow them all to rubble? Did I interpret your response correctly? In my post, I specifically stated that I used to play an opponent that did just that. If I did not make myself clear I apologize. I see this as "gamey" for several reasons. If you intend to prep a target, area artillery barrage is the more realistic way. All of the armored units in the game have a limited ammo load, as pointed out by Redwolf's post. This ammo loadout generally consists of different ammo types, HE, AP, etc. With the tactic stated above, your units are literally using/wasting a limited supply of ammo on targets that may or may not be enemy occupied or for that matter, of any strategic importance. I can see blowing up a building that you are almost certain would pose a real problem should it be occupied with an MG or other dangerous unit. But to systematically blow-up every building in a town or village seems a bit much.
  8. Is this a common tactic with your opponent? Does he see your men in the buildings or is this just preparation before moving into the destroyed village? Sounds kinda gamey to me. Any other opinions on this? I use to play a guy via e-mail who would do this right off the bat. He would pull up a big self-propelled howitzer or tank and start destroying all of the buildings in the village or town. How ridiculous can you get? This is why I prefer to play the AI rather than a human opponent. It's one thing to prep the target by laying down an artillery barrage, it's quite another to pull up a couple of tanks and specifically target and then level every building in site. It would be great to see some feedback on this post.
  9. An AMD Athlon 1.3ghz processor on Googlegear is $43.00. The GeForce Ti4200 with 4x AGP, 8X AGP causes problems because of driver issues, runs $100.00+.
  10. It seems that there are some very good mods out there for the earlier model Panther's but not the G / G late. I'm a big fan of playing October 44 and later. No rarity penalty for Panther G and Panther G late. Perhaps if I missed a mod someone can point this out. Something other than making it look dirty or dusty.
  11. You may want to also consider a processor upgrade. Can your current motherboard support a more powerful processor? This might be the smarter upgrade in your case.
  12. I play my share of Combat Mission and go to Mass on Sundays. I don't feel that CM is sinful unless of course you are obsessed with it and it occupies every waking moment of your day. Now if you will all excuse me I have to make an appointment at the rectory for a confession and an exorcism. Uhhh ... just kidding.
  13. My machine had a tough time with this one as well. Very sluggish scrolling around and takes alot of time to figure out what's going to happen. My rig is not up to this challenge. Is there anyone out there that can play this operation without too much pain?
  14. This is truly a great mod. I can't believe how good this looks in the game. I apologize for the late reply on this old thread.
  15. MikeyD, That last Stug III mod was the best yet. The ambush scheme on the 3/4 bullet riddled side skirts was a great idea and a nice touch. The latest Stug III & IV mods from Flesh and yourself are almost too good to get blown up ... almost. Thanks.
  16. Once again, great job! These beauties are already churning up the bitmap earth on my monitor.
  17. Hunting Panther. Technically not a tank as it does not have a revolving turret for it's main armament. The long 88 can take on all comer's and if you are unfortunate enough to be greeted frontally by it you are in real trouble. I also like the Elephant and the Stug IV. For the Allies, the Firefly and the Easy-eight Sherman.
  18. Does the scenario, "To the Volga", come with CMBB or is this something you guys downloaded from a website? I'm at work so I don't have access to CMBB right now. I would like to give this a try to see how my system handles this: AMD 2700+, 2.17ghz, 1gb Ram PC2700, GeForce Ti4600 128mb. Thanks for any replies in advance.
  19. I eeked out a draw in this quick battle. The clock saved my ass. Four Soviet tanks were closing in on my entrenched infantry just shelling the hell out of em. I like to play late war quick battles as the German defender and always give the Soviets +50%. I seem to get two panzers and a company of grenadiers plus an anti tank gun or flak gun and end up going against 12-15 T-34/85's and IS-2's 3-5 armored cars and two to three times as many infantry. Even though I am playing the AI it still is tough with those odds.
  20. I'm in the process of playing a scenario as German defender against AI Soviet attacker. A real nail-biter occurred as an IS-2 stumbled into a village thinking nobody was home. I had three German squads assault it with 60M panzerfausts all getting hits with penetrations and it kept going. It blasted one squad and the driver of the Stalin tank hit the gas hard and drove quickly to get out of the village. It drove right into the only panzer I had left, a Panther G. Both tanks hurriedly spun their turrets around but the Panther got the drop at less than 90 meters. The Panther fired. RICOCHET! AAHHHHH! Then it was the IS-2's turn. BOOOOM! My Panther is on fire. It looked great with MikeyD's mod. That IS-2 is still in the game and I'm scrambling for a way with just infantry to take it out. It's like a bull in a china shop.
  21. You asked if there were any takers for the tri-color splotch version of the Stug IV? (Hand Raised)
  22. I would like to see some more Panther G mods. Gautrek had a pretty good late model one with an ambush scheme and there were quite a few Panther A early/late war mods put out. There were even some good Panther D mods recently. Perhaps with some optional divisional markings, Leibstandarte, Das Reich, Totenkopf, Wiking, Hitler Jugend, GrossDeutschland... The latest Stug III, IV, Panzer IV mods have been fantastic. They really beef up the visual when playing. Also, total re-work on IS-2 was great. Thanks for all modders continued efforts.
  23. All mods shown in this thread are fantastic! Stug IV is one of my favorite vehicles. Can't remember how many times I built that Tamiya 1:35 scale kit when I was a kid. Now I can download the mod and play Combat Mission. I guess some things never change or ... uh ... change a little bit.
  24. Good light reading. I felt it was worth the money. Goes into detail on some tactics which I would never have tried otherwise. Not to kiss up or anything but I also bought it to support Battlefront. I started playing other games recently, "Day of Defeat", "Diablo II", and just found that after half an hour I was bored and wanted to go back to CMBB. Personal opinion but it seems to me that so many other games on the market are real garbage. The other games I mentioned were birthday gifts. Looking forward to CMAK.
