  1. Redwolf - It's generally a "Frontal penetration at weak point". It seemed to happen so frequently that I just sort of gave up and accepted it as a problem with the game engine. Any info you or others may have on this would be great. Merry Christmas all!
  2. I have to give you my honest opinion on the Tiger in CMBO. Far too vulnerable against smaller caliber guns. I have lost too many Tigers vs 37mm guns. Frontal penetration. This is not modeled well in CMBO. Tiger is modeled much more accurately in CMBB. I can't tell you how many times I have had Tiger tanks knocked out by Stuarts who were reversing out at high speed to avoid getting clobbered by the Tiger. Stuart pops off a shot while reversing and knocks out the Tiger. Don't kill yourself with this dilemma. In my humble opinion this is a flaw in the game engine.
  3. Done. When the results come out, someone should post them to this forum.
  4. I know there isn't a chance of this happening but I would love to see BTS go back to CMBO and put the CMBB engine in it. It just seems more realistic when a tank continues to slam shells into an enemy tank until it sees the crew bail out. I also much prefer how a squad of troopers caught with their pants down get literally wiped out by hidden squads/machine gun nests etc. Any opinions? I still play and enjoy CMBO but it doesn't seem as realistic as CMBB. I will say that with al lof the great mods that I've downloaded over the years, that my CMBO looks just as good as my CMBB game.
  5. I wanted to see fog so bad that I went out and dumped my ATI card for a GeForce Nvidia. I play alot of Combat Mission and for me it was worth the investment.
  6. Try turning anti-aliasing off and other goodies your wizbang video card may have. I was playing around with the settings on my video card, Gforce TI4600, and found that turning certain things on made text and other things disappear from view. Good Luck.
  7. I still play both however I am playing less and less CMBO. The game engine in CMBB is, in my opinion, more realistic.
  8. What Richard says is correct. In a nutshell, the numerical superiority of the Soviets in the right places defeated the over-burdened, over-stretched Germans. My suggestion to the original poster of this thread would be to play and or create battles that represent this in a more historical fashion and not play QB's that have 10 Panthers and 12 T-34's or 10 KV-1's and 15 Panzer MkIII's etc. These types of scenarios will inevitably lead to threads not unlike this one. - ALSO - Stuka ... yeah they definitely helped. Overwhelming air superiority early in the campaign helped the Germans tremendously. Set up scenarios that depict this. Throw in a couple of Stuka's in an early war scenario. Late war scenarios should have the few German tanks harrased by Sturmovik tank busters. As I had stated in the last thread, get a real feel for how the conflict really was otherwise play un-historical scenarios and find out how it was not. It seems a shame to have such great game from an accuracy perspective and then play scenarios where 10 Panthers beat the piss out of 15 T-34/76's. It just doesn't make any sense.
  9. I just finished making several posts to a thread entitled, "Axis 10 - Soviets 0". The problem here is that historically when the Axis was mopping up, early war, in CMBB, they have a hard time winning. On the flip side, from 1943 on when the Axis was retreating and losing, in CMBB, the superior tanks like Tiger and Panther give them the edge and it is hard for the Soviets to win. - Quite the historical accuracy dilemma - The next question is obvious...How can this be? (Get's up from chair...gets a drink...sits back down and waits) Seriously I am intersted in anything anyone has to say on this point. Good thread here!
  10. Spinlock has some excellent points/observations here especially when it comes to QB or pre-packaged battles being the exact opposite of what was going on at that time period in the war. That's why I say, as a sort of rule of thumb, 4 to 1 or 8 to 1 odds Russian to German. You'll soon get a better picture of what the Germans were really up against. - ALSO - Another thought...take the rarity factors to heart. I try not to select anything that is over 20% rarity factor when I am able to choose my equipment. Often times this will quickly eliminate many of the German "Big Cats". Get a better feel for what the Germans were really going through. Playing a QB with 10-15 T-34's up against 7 Medium to heavy panzers and accompanying infantry, artillery, etc. will just get your Soviet "Ass kicked". 10-15 T-34's against 2 PZ IV's with accompanying infantry, artillery, etc. will get you closer to the reality of what was happening from late 1943 on.
  11. I hope that this post is appropriate for this thread...anyway, here goes: I'm not sure exactly what it is that the original poster is experiencing however I have also found it hard to win playing as the Soviets. One thing I try to do is to keep the odds historically accurate. More Russians than Germans in men and material. This gives the Soviet player a better chance. I also play QB's this way in CMBO, more Allies than Axis forces. It seems to me that early in the war the Russians had better tanks than the Germans but later on this situation was reversed. What hampered the Germans later in the conflict was their lack of numbers of superior vehicles. How many T-34/76's and T-34/85's were built compared to Panthers and Tigers? Big difference! Don't know about anyone else who is playing the Russians but my T-34's go up in flames when they meet up with Panther and Tiger. The T-34/76 actually backs off like they don't have any business being there. Keep the armor odds anywhere from 4 to 1 through 8 to 1 Russians to Germans. This will give a T-34/76 a chance to get in a side shot at the Panther and Tiger tanks and knock them out. The coming of the T-34/85 spells doom for Hitlers Panzers. As can be seen in the game, Panther and Tiger can no longer afford to trade shots with impunity when they are facing an 85mm. I think I've said enough and am now prepared to be ripped to shreds by all of the good guys that frequent this wonderful forum. One question I have for the original poster is, What kinds of Soviet defeats are you experiencing? Remember, especially later in the war, the Germans could not afford to replace knocked out heavy panzers while the Russians replaced a knocked out tank with many more tanks. You get the idea. Many times I have played as the German player and been told at the end of the scenario that I have won a major victory but in my own mind I'm thinking...put the battle into a greater historical context and the outcome is no longer such a "Major Victory" simply because too many men and tanks were lost that can't be replaced.
  12. Yeah....I feel the same way about this game. There is no other game on the market that can touch it. The only games I have on my PC are CMBO and CMBB. I took off all the others because quite frankly, they are just a waste of time.
  13. I have downloaded and am using the real color mod. Some of the other "pink" problems that have been posted I have also seen and have had to correct. When I play this scenario I do not see any pink dots. Have you solved this one yet? Thanks and good luck...
  14. I have downloaded and am using the real color mod. Some of the other "pink" problems that have been posted I have also seen and have had to correct. When I play this scenario I do not see any pink dots. Have you solved this one yet? Thanks and good luck...
  15. I downloaded this mod and applied it. Some of the prior complaints about pink muzzle brakes turned out to be true. I had to replace the afflicted vehicles with the original BMP's to get rid of the "pink". The King Tiger was mentioned as well as the Jagdpanther. I also found some pink in the running gear of the STUG IIIG. I am using this mod and will stick with it unless I find some real problems with it in the future. I am also using it with many other mods, vehicles, bunkers, buildings, etc. I find that the other mods do not look out of place with the subdued colors. Good Luck to all with this mod and thanks for the hard work to the author.
  16. You've got balls dude... Expecting this one to be locked up relatively quickly. Should be locked up and thrown away.
  17. This sounds great! I would definitely buy a guide. Keep up the good work BTS!
  18. I have both and continue to play CMBO. I will say this though. I like the improvements that have been made in CMBB. I wish BTS would re-release CMBO with a CMBB engine. If you think about the tremendous scope of the project that CMBB is they could probably do that same type of a game for the West Front from 1939-1945. Wishful thinking...
  19. Ferdinand tank destroyer. It just screams, "Tank Destroyer"! Machine guns??? Who needs em! Someone put out that fire!
  20. I am interested in the movies. If you could get me more info I would appreciate it. Thanks
  21. Uuuhhhh....In that last post of mine...I was just kidding...
  22. I ran a few tests using a 1977 Ford F150 pickup truck and a six pack of Budweiser. Nine out of ten times I was unable to avoid obstacles while driving the truck at high speed through neighbors yards. Which got me thinking about this post. Were German tankers heavy drinkers? If they can consistently hit the front part of an enemy tanks turret than my test results would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that playing "Combat Mission" for too long can make you lose your grip on reality.
  23. I will double check CMBO. If I recall correctly I concur with Zitadelle. In CMBO the running gear for the STUG IV had 8 wheels and the STUG III running gear had 6 wheels. This is the correct configuration for the respective vehicles.
  24. Anyone notice that the Stug III and Stug IV both have the same roadwheel configuration. I think the Stug IV was based on the Panzer MKIV chassis. It should have two more roadwheels than the Stug III which was based on the Panzer MKIII chassis. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this. (As far as that last sentence goes...I guess some things need not be said.) Thanks
