  1. WooHooo! Another copy in SF! BFC- you guys rock. WELL done w/ the logistics! Too bad i have to work tonite, but me thinks a couple of QB's will be nice till then....
  2. Ok, to save endless hair splitting, I'll edit out the "in '45" part. Does that help?
  3. Fair enough, but were ALL russian infantry vet or better in '45? There must have been green/'script russian troops still in '45. Heck, i think many (most?) countries fielded green troops in the final months of the war. They're called replacements. Wouldn't the concept of a "vet-replacement" be quite a rarity in any army in WWII? The point of my original statement was that although early war axis inf may have been able to "stand to" human wave attacks, i doubt late war troops were able to do so (thus, the greater effetiveness of a late war wave attack). This would be especially true should the game have defenders make moral checks upon "receiving" a wave attack. Vet troops can hold steady, greenies go running home to mamma! I'm not up on Eastern front actions, but it would *seem* reasonable that inexperienced russian units had to attack german defenders in '45, and, if so, would use human wave attacks (not all replacement units have the luxury of "getting up to speed" with tactics in a combat zone). If anyone has any info otherwise, please let me know so i can promptly shut my hole!
  4. Well, that makes sense. Can't blame a guy for dreaming, can ya? Would it be possible for QB's, if they were *extremely* limited in force selection? Oh, now that I think about it, the AI handles terrain, so customs scenarios are the way to go. Thanks again,
  5. I completely agree. The modders will have their work cut out for them, for sure! Man o' man, that stalingrad t-34 is amazingly authentic. My guess is that the pixel count will be to the point w/ the rewrite that one could start using actual hi-res photos for mods. Good thing we got CM:BB to hold us over till then.
  6. Well, it is possible that this particular column is *so* thick that it looks like a line! Too bad the pic wasn't better quality to see how deep it was. Considering it *is* a battalion, across such a short frontage (100m looks to be right, in retrospect...damn, that's nuts!), it doens't surprise me that's it's hard to determine their formation. Now, where the *@#%!!! is that canister round when you need it!
  7. well, this is all I could find... (.pdf formated link) Russian Airborne Organizations
  8. Nice one, gents. Hats off to all for getting this one out the door. Looking forward to using that 14" arty (and air support) on the landing zones! One question: has anyone tried a QB using this mod? Are there certain conditions that favor an "accurate " QB without much mod "artifact" from the original game?
  9. Quite true (provided you have the '42's and arty). The poor german grunts at yelnia didn't seem to have much of either. I would think vet troops and up would have no problem dealing w/ this type of attack (provided they had the manpower and sufficient ammo). However, reg troops and below, would probably need a moral check (please don't tell me hundreds of people rushing your position isn't intimidating, unless, of course, you've done it a few times). This type of attack on green axis troops would seem to be highly effective, no? Though the russians get raised moral from using human wave, does anyone know if axis troops take a moral check as well when confronted w/ wave attacks? Would be *quite* interesing if they did. 10. From john keegan's book: "The Face of Battle" c.1976 Though this pic is from 1914, it gives you an idea of what a large "wave" attack looked like from the defenders view. What's the frontage here? 200meters. 300meters max? for a batallion? Yikes!   BTW - great book. especially interesting are the sections on The will to combat and The trend of Battle.
  11. sleeker, yes, but that shot trap on the gun mantlet is rather unsettling. BIG kitty w/ a nasty achilles heel. imagine loosing your KT to a "lowly" 76.2 mm round. (or maybe even, *gulp*, a 45mm round). ugh!
  12. this makes a lot of sense. was it common practice for tankers to wear earplugs? um, me thinks not. between the noise and concusion of a 6" round hitting a few feet away, i can't imagine anyone having the wherewithal to keep fighting (at least for a good length of time) Perhaps we'll get a treat, and everytime a heavy tank is hit by a large HE round, the crew will be SHOCKED, regardless of whether there were casualties or not.
  13. wasn't it guerdian that said the appearance of the t-34 was "very worrying."? after playing yelnia a few times as the germans, i can feel his pain! '41 will be quite challenging. so will '42, '43, and heck, even '44 and '45 (depending on what units you're playing with). all around it's going to be *quite* interesting seeing how we do, compared to historical outcomes.
  14. heh... glad someone's puttin' those posters to good use! those others you got are pretty nifty too. if you're feeling gracious, please send them to me, and i can add them to my collection. i'll repost the posters once the game is out. more fuel for the mod cauldron.
  15. ...but to have smoke and dust ALL over the battlefield? Enough to portray realistic battelfield conditions? That would seem to take a LOT of graphic power. I'd love to see it. Maybe by the time the rewrite is done, we'll have 10 ghz machines and 512mb vid cards. Whee!
  16. Orientation in *any* buttoned AFV is VERY difficult. I had a chance to TC a Bradley IFV whilst I was in the US Army. These vehicles have excellent vision blocks, sights, and communications. I still had to unbutton continually in order to keep the vehicle oriented along the line of attack. Once the dust and smoke start flying, it become quite difficult to see anything out of the vision blocks, or the sights for that matter! This is especially true while advancing on/over an objective. Vehicles and men get mixed up (attempted-controlled chaos is a good way to describe it), and it gets increasingly hard to discern friend from foe. I could never imagine having to advance on target looking out of those puny vision slits on soviet tanks. While playing the demo, my Russian tanks kept unbuttoning as I was sweeping the objective, and I got livid! I then remembered how I had to do it (back in the day), and realized another gem in this game. I guess the trick will be to see if russian crews unbutton more than german ones. Now *that* would be pretty neat.
  17. Picture a tense meeting at the War Room, at the height of the crisis: "Gentlemen, this sounds like a job for...(drum roll please).... CMMOS!!!"
  18. A final nudge, for those who actually *did* something oever the weekend....
  19. I tried HW in the tutorial. Snuck up right in front of the german AT gun, used MG's (w/ covered arc) and the mortar to keep their heads down, and went for it. All the squads broke right as they left the tree line (so much for suppressive fire), but the leader made it....who was then prompty waxed. I would think low quality troops would need this type of attack, as it's the one unique command the ruskies have available to them. May have to do w/ terrain, or weather, or something else...guess we'll have to wait a few weeks and find out!
  20. {compiled all the below links, and a few others. this should suffice 'till demand settles a little, eh?} Too many links all over, so I thought it'd be nice to have one place to go for folks. Maybe this'll help y'all. Please add links as needed! 21. Hey, I kinda like this one...not all smoke is thick and oily, right? However, it would sure be swell to have *different* .bmp's for each type of burning object. ie; one for vehicles, one for bldg's, one for vegetation, etc. Heck, if one's going to go to the trouble, different smoke .bmp's for each *type* of vehicle, bldg, veg, etc. Maybe BFC could push back.... Whoops! Heh Heh.... One for the rewrite, but of course....
  22. COI scenarios Bright makes my day Oops wrong thread
  23. Petes- You's best be tip-toeing 'round these parts with that "D" word. These sum pretty sensitive folks. Trigger happy, at best! Heck, my neck's still all kinds of chaffed from that last thread... For the record, there's three (maybe four) of us in the "D" camp, 9000+ in the other...food for thought....
