  1. When CMSF came out I tried RT but quickly realized that I would invariably lose a unit or two through getting over-focused at another place. And that would invariably cause me to lose. In CM1 this wouldn't be so much a problem due to the number of units of a typical scenario and the considerably less lethal environment. But, I find CMSF to be very "unstable" - like a modern fighter that requires a computer to keep it flying in control. Small errors can be catastrophic. So, the loss of a squad or a critical unit can change the game quickly. I just tried "A Trouble In Herat" (a very good/fun CMA scenario) in RT and despite my extra 2 years experience I had the same problem again of losing units unnecessarily. Also, it still took me about 3 days of average 6 hours per day to complete it - so not a lot faster than WEGO. My prejudice is that I "feel" that the discipline of having to issue orders that are as "safe" as possible for a one minute increment is more "realistic" (to me) than the ability to pause and have everybody turn on a dime in one or two seconds. It's just a game, so it's simply personal preference. I generally hate wrist twitch games even tho' I play Call Of Duty genre games every now and then for a change of pace.
  2. One day, you gonna regret not getting that SSD for your OS. (I know I do...) heh.
  3. Yes I agree. I think I already went on the record as saying how much I like your scenarios and campaigns as they have that "je ne sais quoi" that make them so much more tasty than most. (And your donations to the "Save the Erwin Foundation" have been much appreciated btw.) So get off your butt and do a decent CMA scenario or campaign plz.
  4. Argh, run from her! Women, the scourge of good time CM play every time! But, if you simply give the A/B a set-up zone, that would be easy (I hope). Oooops have ta go, wife watching...
  5. Command delay was one of the features that made CM feel "real" and not just a video game. I have missed it in CM2. Even in the age of computers etc., it still takes time for instructions to register esp in a combat situation with noise and other "distractions." The comments earlier from BF make one think that in the effort to make things more "realistic" exactly the opposite effect is being achieved.
  6. Just finished "A Trouble In Herat" which is a CMA scenario but serves as an example. It's a great situation and I loved playing it (assault into a town by the Soviets) But, after each session of play I would save and ceasefire to get an idea of my progress as am not experienced as the Soviets. After the first 20 mins I had a "Minor Victory." But, every time I saved and checked after that and including the final result, I also had a "Minor Victory." It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game, but I wonder what is the point of Victory Conditions at all if they really don't change much regardless of your progress. So, when designing, please make victory conditions that change with progress. Thanks...
  7. It's just part of the fun of CMSF! So many details.
  8. I see you mean it to be like a historical event, but I suggest that you at least start the game with the A/B in cover. Otherwise, I felt a bit cheated when I couldn't move them to cover fast enough. Presumably, since they had already been ambushed, they would be in the best defensive positions already. BTW: Any reason you don't have set-up zones and all units are fixed at the start? I only played 3 turns, but I liked the situation. I just hope you can at least put the A/B in cover at the start or allow us to set-up as desired.
  9. Apache: AFAIK, the issues you describe are frustrating a lot of people. Not sure if it's a bug, or simply a weird/poor design choice. It just adds complexity without any gameplay value (that I can discern). I think it's all in an effort to "look" like an accurate simulation when it's really primarily an entertainment game.
  10. Thanks Berto. I just hope that someone somewhere does a new Campaign or two for CMA. It's rather skimpy on scenarios and only has the original two Campaigns AFAIK.
  11. I hope this is a sticky thread GAJ. I never noticed it b4. Presumably you have the same for CMAK and CMBB?
  12. Am playing a (CMA) scenario where the squads have SVD rifles, but according to the ammo bar, no 7.62 ammo (that's what it takes right?) of any variety. I think the SVD takes 7.62x54, so b4 starting the scenario I had to replenish its ammo. Is this an overlooked error or...?
  13. Nice to have some new scenarios. Thanks. Any chance of another Campaign?
  14. Yes, Alan is correct. ALL 7.62 etc. ammo is indicated in the 2nd bar. This is particularly noticeable when you play the Reds (or Soviets in CMA) as the 7.62x39 as well as the 7.62x54 go in the 2nd bar and it's confusing to know if there is an abstraction at work and in fact ANY 7.62 ammo is used by all rifles and MG's taking "7.62mm" and you really don't have to worry about the x39 and x54 variants (or whether it's rifle or MG ammo). AFAIK this is yet another example of a rather vital bit of info that is NOT in the manual. I suspect that it's a bit of a trick played on us to disguise the fact that the CM2 system is less of an accurate simulation than a (very good) game full of abstractions.
  15. Hope this helps: AMMO TYPES EXPLAINED #11 [-] General Posts: 7978 (16-09-10 08:05:20) ReplyQuoteEditMore My Recent Posts From BFC forums: Ammo and corresponding weapons data Pistol rounds Used in SMGs and handguns, not acquirable. 16. Sorry about that. (I kinda assumed this was a work in progress.)
  17. I tried a few turns of this scenario Zeb, and it is an interesting situation. What bothered me right at the start was the arty attack on the A/B as set-ups are fixed. Given that this isn't a sudden ambush but something that happened some time ago, you should allow the A/B at least to have a zone of set-up. I hope you'll do a fix and then I will try it again.
  18. Holy cow... How much will VAT be then??? Over 20%??!! My only comment I learned when I bought my new machine is that you may get more bang for the buck by getting a (small) SSD for exclusive use by the OS rather than spending many hundreds of dollars on a slightly faster processor etc. But, am not a techie, so...
  19. I'm sure tech support can help. Quite a few of us have had the same problem with Win7. Have you checked your security level? Eg: Make sure you "Run as Admin." If you have ZoneAlarm you need to disable the "Toolbar" part. etc.
  20. There are 5 columns for types of munitions. In the original CMSF manual I don't see an explanation of what types of munitions are repped by each column. It's important as after using up ammo on missions one needs to know what types are left. (Dangerous to order LIGHT when all that is left is HEAVY etc.) Anyone know? Thanx...
  21. LOL. Brilliant description of "Pentagon mission creep!"
  22. Market Garden is another obvious one as both sides get to attack and defend - that is part of what makes a great game/campaign. Really looking forward to Ardennes. I'm sure it will be a good first module, but I am am a bit blah about Normandy. (I'm from the generation that had to be paid to play Allies.)
  23. I think it all depends on whether you like "wrist twitch" games (as that is the predominant game form these days). I love the thoughtfulness of WEGO - working out reasonable tactics that my pixeltruppen have to follow for a minute at least - rather than assuming I can always pause and correct every second. I just don't like that sort of video game. The downside is that yes, WEGO games do take a lot longer. But, the planning is what makes it fun. So, far I still love watching the graphics repeatedly too.
  24. And yes, as Mord said, I also LOVE watching the playbacks - often from the troops' ground level POV. What was the point of working on all the great graphics otherwise?
