  1. Guys, My educated opinion is that Jelly Judder's kill screen is some sort of staged shooting gallery set up scenario. I have played a lot of BO & BB, and I may be wrong, but I have never seen anything apporaching this kill score against the AI much less against a semi competent, non sleeping, non drugged human. Cheers, Richard
  2. Guys, What is an nVidia Ti4800 ?? I have heard of Ti4200, 4400, 4600s and FX Ti5800s. However, what is a 4800 or is the reference supposed to be a 5800 or 4200/4400/4600 ?? Cheers, Richard
  3. Vulture, Looks like nuclear arty to me. Cheers, Richard
  4. Guys, Holy semoley! These people are some serious. And darn, are they cool. This is a true tribute to those who served on all sides. Cheers, Richard [ March 06, 2003, 09:53 AM: Message edited by: PiggDogg ]
  5. RS, Here are some answers: 1. As far as I know, yes, non tracked vehicles can set of AT mines. 2. As far as I know, depending upon the type of terrain in which the holes have been placed, your enemy will spot foxholes at the same distance whether occupied or not occupied. 3. If the vehicle on which infantry is riding hits an AT mine, the inf will dismount, possibly and probably with casualties. Cheers, Richard
  6. Guys, Wow. I have not seen Wellington's Victory or Terrible Swift Sword mentioned in quite a year. I'll have to go back into my wargame closet and pull out those puppies. (As an aside, I have board wargames going back to 1958-60 with Tactics II and the original rectangle unit Gettysburg. Yep, I'm that old. ) I spent a zillion hours on both WV & TSS with a substantial edge on WV. In fact, I authored (with the great help of some friends) the major rewrite of the WV rules that premiered in Quatra Bras. Yes, it would be great to have Civil War and especially Napoleonic and Seven Years War games brought to life on the computer with a CM type system. I have to agree with Jason's observations regarding the features of such new games. Indeed, the Nappy age need for 15 or preferably 20 minute turns would eliminate CM's wonderful 1-second-is-1-second play which allows each major round be visible from tube to target. However, one would have to suffer through such inconveniences. Cheers, Richard
  7. Coe, Treat the uber Cats like unter Cats. That is, protect their flanks with terrain, use keyhole firelanes, and plan for first shots. Also, in addition to the uber Cats' flanks being protected by terrain, cover the flanks of the uber Cats with AT guns, PzIVs, Marders, PzIV/70s, and/or anything that can kill T34s at range. Keep these unter Cats hidden. Wait for the T34s to rush forward and expose themselves. Then ambush the crappe out of the T34s, preferably on their flanks. After the exposed T34s have been controlled, the uber Cats can be a bit more brave. However, remember: "treat uber Cats like unter Cats". Cheers, Richard
  8. Walpurgis, Goodness, I was not implying that you were critical of Jason. In the context of the thread, I was simply saying that halfies are quite fragile and because of that they are of limited use. Additionally, because of their limited use, they are quite expensive pointwise. I just don't purchase them in a human choose troops games. HTs can be used, but one must be exceedingly careful with them. Xerxes & Jason, You both are right. Trenches with wire in direct HE fire protected terrain will be real tough nuts to crack. Of course, the defender's skill will be in not allowing the attacker to get "odds". If you all play, keep the unwashed masses and rabble apprised of the game's progress. This will be a learning experience. Cheers, Richard
  9. Bell, Without any historical or factual citation, in BB, all vehicles seem to turn waaaaay tooooo sloooowly, especially AFVs. I suspect that there may have been some threads on this subject hopefully with BFC response. However, being lazy, I have not recently looked these up. Cheers, Richard
  10. Walpurgis, As is obvious from Jason's posts here, Jason is explaining how to defeat men in trenches with the minimum and barest amount of force, that is, on a shoestring. There are other ways to accomplish that task. Such as, if one has lots of direct fire HE, preferably somewhat bigger direct fire HE (105s & larger) or some other overwhelming firepower advantage, the job will be easier to pry well entrenched guys out of their WWI and late American Civil War engineering necessities. As far as halfies, Jason has a recent post (with which I agree) on the most efficient point-wise use of those expensive modes of transport. Look it up. Personally, I don't purchase halfies because they are quite expensive for some so vulnerable. However, they can be used if they are very carefully and very cautiously handled. Indeed, if halfies are forced upon one, one should use them properly and most efficiently as Jason pointed out. Jason, You are quite appreciated, at least me and probably by many others. Take some time off and have a good dark Guinness. Cheers, Richard
  11. Terrapin, You are from Baton Rouge? I'm here in Metairie. Maybe we should play a BB via pbem some time. Turbo Dog is just one of the best biers (yep, German spelling) around. Also, Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager is most delicious and local New Orleans. Also, I belong to the Crescent City Homebrew Club. I am within a 3 or 4 days of the final rack on an American Pale Ale. Also, on this coming Saturday, we are brewing a stout. Life is good here in New Orleans. Yankee, You know of Turbo Dog in New York??!! Good bier travels fast. Everyone, Remember. A bier or two per day is "very" good for the heart. It is good medicine. Cheers, Richard
  12. Off-map mortars that can be on-map (81s & 82s) and 50s are substantially better than their off-map counterparts. (Yep, 50s have no off-map counterparts.) First, those mortars must be used in grand batteries, that is 4, 5, 6, or more tubes, plus a spotting leader. Penny packet use of these on-mortars is not effective. Second, on-map mortars are more accurate than their off-map counterparts. Third, on-map mortars have a near instantaneous response time compared to their off-map courterparts' lonnnnnng time on target time. On-map mortars in grand batteries can only hit one area in a manner similar to off-map mortars. Indeed, the off-map mortars' quantity of smoke shells and cheaper cost per shell are off-map mortars' only real advantage. In short, except for off-map mortars' smoke or as part of a cheap infantry battalion, on-map mortars are much more effective than their off-map brothers. 13. Goody, I thought that this thread was about bier: Guinness, Bass, Anchor Steam, Newcastle, Salvator, Warsteiner Dunkel, Dixie VooDoo Lager, Abita Turbo Dog, and other wonderful brews. However, Sosh was talking about these military sites. Bier is much more fun than this war stuff. Indeed, if those wonderful brews are mixed with CM, then one has a wonderful mix. Goody, thus, you don't have to defend the honor of such an esteemed brewery as Guinness. Now, let us have a pint of a few of those good hearty brews. Cheers, Richard
  14. Deadmarsh, You are totally correct. Patch 1.02 should adjust the BB arty costs. Cheers, Richard
  15. Yank, Thanks for performing the test that I was too busy, ... make that, too lazy to perform. Cheers, Richard
  16. Jason, Mikey, & All, Question: In BB, what is the approximate range from spotting enemy infantry at which defend MGs in good cover (woods, tall pines, heavy & light buildings) go from sound contacts to spotted ?? From experience with BB, my guess is that this range is somewhere between 200 to 250 to 300 meters, probably between 200 to 250. However, if someone has some more precise infomation or educated guesses, please come forward. Cheers, Richard
  17. Juardis & Jason & Guys, You have seen the "Arty Sucks In BB" threads at BoB. We just have to face it. In BB, arty sucks. In BO, I was a lover and massive user of arty. However, in BB, to put it succinctly and without much explanation, arty sucks (I keep repeating myself, don't I ). I doubt that I will purchase much of it unless it is big and probably German. Instead, I'll probably buy good direct fire HE AFVs (T34-85s (seems OK), StH-105s (should be OK), SU152s (I don't know with its sloooow rate of fire and small ammo load), etc.) Anyone has comments on arty alternatives in BB? Cheers, Richard  [ January 25, 2003, 01:13 PM: Message edited by: PiggDogg ]
  18. Jason, Good to see you back after your long (4 month or so?) absence. Cheers, Richard
  19. Poop, Is it worth it? I say, yep. However, BO or BB may not be for everyone. It is not perfect. But by far, it is the best wargame-simulation out there, ever. Indeed, it is very much worth it for me. Read, learn, & play. Give it a chance. Maybe, it will be for you. Cheers, Richard [ January 25, 2003, 12:57 PM: Message edited by: PiggDogg ]
  20. Dead, I don't have any historical or factual backup, but I suspect that the ATR can't do anything against the T34's tracks, at least in BB. Cheers, Richard
  21. Agua, Jason is truly an incredible wealth of info on CM and how it relates to history. Jason, thanks. Cheers, Richard
  22. Vadr, 1) In my cold, calculating, and realistic opinion, in BO ord BB, it is 'NOT' gamey to send a) any tank anywhere, c) at any time, d) for any reason, e) for not any reason during a CM game. If it was not gamey to pick the tank in the first place, you can use it any way that you please. 2) Further, since your action was in a variable end BB game, you opponent has even less of a justifiable gripe. Indeed, I feel that he has no gripe if you had been playing a fixed end, BO game. If you send a halftrack, a jeep, a truck, a PzI on a suicide mission on the last turn of a game, so be it. Your opponent may not like it, but he should have battered you so badly that you could not have made that suicide move. In short, you can use any weapon that you have, in any manner that you wish. If you would have pulled such an evil move against me, I would have congratulated you on a good move. If required, I would have pulled such a move against you or anyone. I expect that my opponents would do the same to me. Remember, CM, both BO & BB, are just games, pretty accurate ones, indeed. One plays by the rules whether imposed by the game itself or by the players by agreement. So don't feel guilty about your action. Your opponent was a whiner. Cheers, Richard
  23. Wow!! There are way too many residual drugs floating around Ozzie's brain for him to be able to apply enough mental process to play CM. However, maybe I'm wrong. Cheers, Richard
  24. Vadr, I just happened to see this thread. What you did was in no way gamey. It may have been somewhat risky or foolish, but it is not gamey. You guessed right and got lucky. Most anything that BO or BB allows "during" play is fair and right. Generally, the only gamey things can be things done "before" play starts. Examples may be picking German Flak trucks or mixing Brits and Americans. Other fine people may be able to think of some other gamey things. Somewhat surprisingly, CM contains not many gamey gameplay issues. Certainly, that is quite good. Indeed, CM is a game, thus it should be played as a game. 25. Attorney General Ashcroft is a pinhead. Yep, this is a Bill O'Reilly term for Ashcroft with which I fully agree. Cheers, Richard
