BETA AAR- Spoiler- Discussion Thread
c3k replied to vincere's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
Ouch... I think the two exchanges (Bil's Hellcats and that Panther) leave the two sides about as they were at the beginning, relative to one another. Bil saw a solid opportunity and took it. Baneman needs to use overwatch and prevent freebies like that. Meantime, the infantry slowly advances. -
CM Final Blitzkrieg - AXIS (Attack) BETA Battle Report

This will not be complete until the Jadgtiger fires! Even if it's at a jeep. -
Best Christmas gift ever! Getting to see ChrisND use his shiny new +1 Banhammer of Smiting! Well swung, sir, well swung.

Ahhh, the poster must've mistaken Christmas (since this is the "Christmas Bones" thread) for something else. See, on Christmas, people get gifts from a magical elf. Goods for free! Isn't it wonderful? Apparently, the poster thinks that's a model for economics. "You give me stuff for free, and it's good for everyone. Well, maybe not you, but it's good for me, so you should do it or you're greedy." Funny, but I'll bet he'd resist working for free for me. Shrug. That's the kind of outlook you get if you spend your days living under a bridge waiting for the unwary to pass by. The Battle Pack sounds like an excellent idea. I know...I've seen it. Ken

IS-2 - thickness of gun mantlet armor measured

IS-2 - thickness of gun mantlet armor measured
c3k replied to Amizaur's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
(Hmm...I "quoted" erroneously, somehow...) Looking at the above image, I am curious about the profile view on the right. The thickness seems to be measured to the center of the mantlet (the black line). Yet, the same numbers are used in the center figure for the thicknesses on the right edge (as viewed). I think the mantlet gets thinner towards the top and the edges, and perhaps the image is just a "generic" image. Is that correct? -
If my only CM achievement has been to get Bil to adopt my battlefield ID technique, I can rest easy, knowing that I have reached a gaming pinnacle to which many aspire. A Pinnochio pinnacle, but a peak, nonetheless. Of course, that halftrack will probably try to stick its nose where it doesn't belong.

IS-2 - thickness of gun mantlet armor measured
c3k replied to Amizaur's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
LOL! The best part was this: "Few years later I got my hands on simple but functional ultrasonic thickness gauge (OK, OK, I admit - bought it just for armor measuring :-)). " The second best part was realizing someone else was taking the pictures while you were holding the device. THAT person (wife?) deserves a medal. Or a dinner out. This deserves honorable mention somewhere, and a free game. Or two. Ken -

Combat mission literally breaks my computer. Please help.

This. My suggestion would be to totally uninstall the game. Reboot, run some diagnostics (sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt, for just one example) and make sure your Windows OS is running properly. (There are other diagnostics.) Then, reinstall the game, keeping a close eye on where the game installer puts the savegame files. (You may have them in a non-standard location. If you have changed the User Profile locations, or permissions, you may have introduces some instabilities. Ask me how I know. ) But, all the above is pure conjecture. The Helpdesk ticket really is the way to go. Ken -
These two statements do a nice job of defining the current state of CM post-penetration ballistics. Whereas the actual projectile/armor interaction is very well modeled (with a few outlier exceptions), the post-penetration effects on the projectile do not seem to modeled (beyond first-order effects?). The lack of dynamically changed projectile deformation, shear, disintegration, or other physical changes seem to be what's causing some of the excessive performance. This is obviously an extraordinarily complex topic and to model it in-game and keep any kind of framerate would require extreme simplifications. Having said that, I don't think any engine block presents much of an obstacle to modern armor piercing projectiles. Engines utilize light-weight metals, chosen for their thermodynamic properties. Magnesium (rare), aluminum (very common), and other materials (rubber hoses, water/anti-freeze, air gaps and cylinder spaces) do not present anywhere near the resistance of a layered, composite, armor. High powered rifle rounds (.50 caliber class) can easily penetrate engine blocks. It is not solid metal. Penetrating an ERA block from the opposite direction it is designed to resist would, in my opinion, almost totally negate the ERA block's resistance values. (Since that resistance is predicated on the explosive properties of the block, coupled with shearing movements of the overlay armor. Penetrating from the back of the block may not even allow for any detonation of the block.) So, rear armor, then engine block, then ERA from behind does not offer a tremendous amount of resistance (as measured in relative terms to the RHAe of modern glacis/front turret protections).

Yes, this is going to be nice. I've enjoyed CMFI far more than I thought I would. It's got such a great combination of flavor, units, and terrain. More and better is always good.

Yeah, I think you're okay. I =never= mention numbers or "what would you do if he had a Leaping Lizard tank behind the barn" type of hypothetical. Any specific could leak info, or, could induce him to think there's something where there isn't. That would do the same. ("Hmmm, that poster mentioned a Leaping Lizard. I hadn't thought of that. Now I need to guard that barn with an Exigency Laser.") I ask about "your opponent" or "his forces". FWIW. Again, unless there's a clearly identified unit. Like the Sturmtiger in the CAAC. Then I'd ask about it. Meanwhile, yeah, I'd love to see some autocannon vs. M36/Jeep action. -
Is FB more optimized than the others?
c3k replied to Nercon's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
Agreed with all the above: your machine should be smooth. FWIW, when my i7-4770k used a GTX670, the play was smooth with no lag. It's not raw hardware. It's not the game. The two suggestions posted (tell us how you play the game and start a helpdesk ticket) should help get this sorted. (Since it's not hardware or game related, that leaves drivers, other programs conflicting with it (whether using ram or cpu cycles or whatnot), or network lag, or some other factor.) Ken -
That's a great Christmas bone! You do know that it sets the bar for every Christmas which follows?
