  1. Funny, I've been to almost every 3rd world country out there, and when you said that you were in "a Banana Republic" I flashed to a lot of my experiences. I couldn't imagine the exchange happening quite the way you described. THEN I grokked the retail store reference. D'OH!
  2. You guys are doing us a great service with this program. Thank you. Ken
  3. Um, the fix, mentioned by Steve right above, will not fix this issue. I mean, Charles was working on wAndering troops. There's nothing in the pipeline for vacant gazing, wool-gathering, bewildered, wOndering troops as asked about in this thread. Just sayin'... Ken
  4. Seriously. I mean, Civ II was just an update fixing all the problems with gameplay and graphics in Civ I. $60 for it? Do you know how much work I put into my Aztecs? Gone with the update that I had to pay for. This is outrageous! Every new update WIPES out my progress! AND I have to pay full-up, new-game, prices for it. Now, since Civ IV, they've stopped including the whole world! I have to buy separate games for Colonization, Revolution, Warlords, Rome, Beyond the Sword, and the list goes on! That's almost $1,000 invested in a game the developers just didn't bother getting right the first time! No doubt the influx of cash made them forget their goals. I'm not saying Sid Meier is lazy or greedy, but Civ I certainly wasn't released in a ready state. Currently my gaming buddies and I are playing tiddly-winks. It is just as nerve-wracking and rewards strategy just as well, but with more real-life fidelity. I'll go back to Civ when the Civ VI patch is released for free. Ken
  5. They just returned from a sightseeing trip to Rio... Known. (But funny. As long as I'm not playing as Germans.) Ken
  6. I have several v2.0 pbem games going on at the moment, with no problems. All were FRESHLY started games under v2.0. Are your problems with games started under v2.0? Have you posted in the tech support forum? Ken
  7. Game vs. Simulation: Reading Jason Mark's "Besieged: The Epic Battle for Cholm", p. 17, he tells of a German company counterattacking a Soviet regimental assault group. The two units were in contact for 10 hours. The German company stopped the Soviet advance. Ten hours of combat resulted in 4 dead and 3 wounded German soldiers. I think we all would beat our heads against the computer screen if we had to endure "realistic" attack tempos. Oh, the WIA:KIA ratio? Yeah, 3:4, not 3:1. That's 4x as many KIA as the oft-cited ratio would have us believe. Ken
  8. Georgie, The majority of problems seem to revolve around continuing current battles. There IS a method to take a current battle in v1.10 and update it so it will run in v1.11. However, it is NOT foolproof. It will PROBABLY work...but may not. Likewise, battles in v1.11 CAN be updated to v2.0, but there is a possibility that battle update will fail. The patch, v1.11, and the upgrade, v2.00, work. It is BEST to update to v1.11, THEN apply the v2.00 upgrade. However, if you have a particular battle in which you've invested a lot of time and effort, you may not want to gamble with it by updating THAT battle. (FWIW, my experience is that the larger the savegame file, meaning the more complex the game, the higher the likelihood that the update process will not work. There are incredibly complex interactions which are not all fully understood going on under the hood in each savegame. Every turn is unique. There is no way to test every savegame update permutation.) See this: http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=107758 for information about how to have v1.10 (or v1.00), v1.11, AND v2.00 all running on your computer at the same time. If you keep 3 installs, then you can use v1.10 to run your old savegames. Likewise v1.11 and v2.00. Once you wrap up your old games, you can delete the old CMBN installs. Post if you have any more questions. Ken
  9. Childress, Thank you for taking the time to test, picture, and post. That makes it far easier to track. (FWIW, I've just had the same thing happen in a game.) So far, only with bocage. Any other terrain? Or, is it for any deploy in any terrain? Thanks, Ken
  10. Sorry man, that was me. I saw your car go by while I was waiting to turn, so I clicked my lights off and took up a tactical trail position. Then, when I thought it best, I zoomed up and closed the distance. I matched speeds with a dab of downshift so you wouldn't see my brake lights flare. (FLARE!!! I said it.) Then I turned on my headlights. I timed it just right, apparently. It's what I do...
  11. I had almost an entire company lined up behind one row of bocage. Sure, I had that nasty back-of-the-head tickle. You know, the one that says, "Oh, that is a really bad tactical deployment." I ignored it. Guns up. What could go wrong. "Boom." Huh. A spotting round out front from the enemy. Hmmm, he knows I've got someone behind the bocage. I probably have 2 or 3 minutes before any arty comes close. I left them there...for just one more turn. That was the turn in which the linear mission came in on target. Not too many men were left. An entire company wasted. I wish that were a one-off bad decision. My men wish it even more. Ken
  12. siffo998, Sincere questions: Is the result of the Lynx 20mm something you disagre with? Should a burst of 20mm with HE result in damage, or not? Should a burst of 20mm AP with no HE result in damage, or not? (My opinion: the radio sets were much more fragile - tubes, not chips - in the '40's. There is frequent mention in AAR's that radios get knocked out by non-penetrating hits.) Ken
  13. This guy is pretty funny. Seriously. It's obviously a prank post. You know he's got his buddies in his room with him and he's saying, "Watch this", with each post. Thanks for the laugh. Enjoy, Ken
  14. (snipped and italicized by me) No, it's just that almost everyone else has the brains to think about it before posting. I'll give you your FREE patch. Really. I'm about to do you a favor, and show you how giving this community is. I won't even request that you PM me. I'll set it up so you can download your FREE patch from a 3rd party server. Look up. Not that far up. Just up to the top of the forum announcements. There! Yes, that's it. The part that says, "Combat Mission Battle for Normandy patch v1.11". Here's the link: http://www.battlefront.com/community/announcement.php?f=124&a=579 Sure, you wanted 2.0 for free. Well, 2.0 is an UPGRADE. v1.11 is a PATCH. So, there you go, one free patch, from me to you. Now, you want movable waypoints? Upgrade. And pay for it. You want... Ability to assign special uniform types for select units types on a unit by unit basis. Target Armor Arc Command Expanded Floating Icon Categories "Fog of War" Floating Icons 2D Editor Map Overlay Auto-Assemble Road/Wall/Hedge Tool Camera Jump to Groups Target Briefly Command New Rendering Shaders Bump and Normal Mapping Improved Framerates Pausable Realtime TCP/IP Mode Well, you've got to PAY. See, the original wasn't broken because it did not include that stuff. So, no patch to "fix" what isn't broken. Now, I'd like some ice cream - for free. Why can't we have THAT? Ken
  15. Discussed a lot. Highpoints: - Aggressive play - Oft-cited 3:1 WIA:KIA ratio is THEATER-wide, not at the pointy tip of battle. (A lot of minefield, harassing arty, etc., over a long period of time.) Back area guys get lighter wounds (relative) and faster medical care and live in more hygienic conditions. They survive more. - Modern stats are FAR different from WWII: smaller bullets, better care, body armor. There may be room to correct this, but I'm not sure this is a game-play problem. A search should show a lot of posts. Ken
  16. Anecdotally, I, too, have noticed in many of my battles that the machingunners (heavy or light) had far fewer kills credited to them than just about any other unit...of any size. I could just be bad at using MG's. (Skew: play vs. AI means you're attacking. Less opportunity for good MG use. Ken
  17. Targeting Buildings Gents, this has been covered MANY times. Here's a summary of the issue. If there is an enemy unit in a building and the enemy is SPOTTED by the firer, barring any intervening LOS block, the firer will be able to TARGET the ENEMY. Capitalized for emphasis. If a firer wants to shoot at a building, then the action spot is what is the target. In order to shoot at a building action spot, the action spot must be in LOS. The action spot is at the center of the building facade for each floor. (That is a slight simplification.) If you can see the edge of building, but no enemy in a window, you cannot fire at the building. If you can see the full width of the building, you can fire at it. (The above applies on a "per floor" basis.) If you can an ENEMY in the building, you can target the ENEMY. Ken
  18. The Germans need the extra chin strap length. Have you ever tried shouting orders in German? It's all in the jaw...
  19. My bold. So, let's see: BFC released a game which specified which OS it would run under. Windows 8 most definitely wasn't listed since CMBN came out well before Windows 8 was available. You changed your OS to Windows 8. CMBN stopped working. It had a bug. In an OS it wasn't advertised to work under. BFC released a patch which enabled CMBN to run in Windows 8. So, BFC enabled a game to run in a new operating system which was never thought of when you purchased the game. Remind us all here, how much did the v1.11 patch cost? Oh, it was free? Hmm, one could almost call that (wait for it)...unethical? The highpoints: 1) Let's recognize that altipueri, after complaining elsewhere, made up for that by posting his thanks in this thread for the resolution of his problem. That was a class move, reflecting well upon the aforementioned gentleman. 2) BFC provided a FREE patch for a problem based on a user migrating to software not advertised as safe to use to run the game. 3) Did someone get something for nothing? I think so... Back to it. (Edited to add: Please don't think I'm picking on altipueri. I am using his post to show the significant efforts made to improve the game...for free.)
  20. Big Al, Get the demo. Play the demo. Buy the game. Ken P.S. I'm just up the road from Charlotte, past Statesville a bit.
  21. Well, from what I've heard so far, if those 85 beers cost $5 each, about half the drinking well-wishers would be well-drink welshers.
