U.S. Navy still uses hard mount binoculars nicknamed "Big Eyes" by Navy men. I have some nice photos of a volcano erupting at dawn in the Philipine Islands at about a range of 10 miles by successive attempts at shooting various shutter speeds using a Canon SLR and various lenses. Edited because I had the pictures shot with a cannon rather than a Canon. Just as fun to shoot but the first wouldn't have the same desired effect.
