  1. Gorgeous Tanks. I'm looking forward to down the line when folks like you, Fernando, Gordon, Marco, AndrewTF, et al stop letting real life and things like playing the new world's best game get in the way of making my CMBB as grand as my CMBO. (Make no mistake though, stock CMBB is magnificent to begin with, which means higher highs when the Artists have had their say) [ October 23, 2002, 04:19 PM: Message edited by: Vergeltungswaffe ]
  2. All nice ideas, but, with the exception of possibly making it look like there is cammo netting on a bunker or something, the hard-coded 3d models don't exist within the game.
  3. Great first AAR. I enjoyed living a little piece of your experience. That was a great series of scenarios. I forget the title but there is also a German set that covers a completely different battle and timeframe. Its always great to hear that a new convert to the world's greatest game(s) is having a wonderful time.
  4. How about this. Soviet Shermans modded to American. German captured T-34's modded to Russian. Infantry modded appropriately. Voila' instant 1945 or Korean War.
  5. For the same reason that the map has a mathematically precisely rectangular shape- because it's a game, and some aspects of reality either can't be modelled or are very difficult to model. I disagree with the statement when read literally. In today's Delta Force and GPS and all that world, why, I can easily see a commander saying that if you maggots don't take that hill by exactly 0700 hours then the HALO guys are gonna drop in enemy territory and it's all gonna suck. But I can't believe that in WWII a battle which lasts twenty minutes, in which I've decimated all the enemies armor and reduced his men to a handful of routed exhausted men would be considered a "defeat" simply because another ten minutes could not be afforded. For me, I've just about had it with the end game victory determination- from now on I'm going to set my turn limit to the maximum, and simply drive him off the board, (assuming I win!). [Ed- I mean in my QBs...] At any rate, my point is that if both players agree to a time limit, then perforce they are agreeing to "unrealistic" end game behaviour. Otherwise, they are inviting dispute by providing an inducement for unreal behaviour; perhaps the best way to avoid bad feelings about the end game is simply not to have one- let the game run on until both sides can see exactly what the outcome is. It's been said that people will abuse that system, refusing to admit defeat by running their last squad of peons all over the board hiding or whatnot... well, just don't play those people. ? 6. Just a clarification for you. Neither CMBO nor CMBB models gun depression. If the Panther didn't fire at your Daimler, there was another reason.
  7. Sorry about the assumption, thought sure you were he. As far as a situation where smoke was used with no particular purpose, off the top of my head, the closest I can recall reading about was a case where an American tank company came upon 2 or 3 Panthers (iirc) and, doing what they were trained to do, immediately smoked things up big time. However, they weren't able to settle on who was going to bait and who was going to flank, and by the time the smoke cleared, they had basically done nothing. The funny part was, the Germans knew what the smoke meant and pulled back, so when the smoke cleared and the tankers thought "Oh S**t!", there was nothing. So, not exactly their intention, but a use of smoke that did nothing but kill time, lol.
  8. You probably have to look at it in terms of why is the scenario X number of turns. In this particular battle, there was some reason why things had to be concluded within the given timeframe. Whether thats massive reinforcements for the defender, or the need to tie up the defender for some period of time so they can't assist elsewhere in the sector, or whatever. If we accept that premise, then we can accept that both sides are aware that time is fleeting. That being said, the use of smoke to hold off the attacker is perfectly reasonable. However, I think by your post, you don't really like it, and since you didn't use the smoke, I think thats definitely the case. I agree with you and would have been much more likely to call in HE on my own position as well. I am very happy about the variable ending turns in CMBB. While it isn't perfect, these situations are a lot less pronounced. Speaking of not speaking in a long time, I remember you from your AcePylut days on the Taldren boards. Man, I got sick of the dynaverse problems and gave up on SFC II before Orion pirates came out. Wonder how many are still there and will play SFC III?
  9. If you have the time and inclination to offer it without the number, it will be more popular. Nice job, btw.
  10. Why choose? I'm grabbing both. I'll just have to manually swap 'em until Gordon blesses us with the CMBB CMMOS. Hmm, thats one hell of an acronym, maybe he'll call it CMBBMOS, or some such. Edited to add a thought. [ October 17, 2002, 12:03 PM: Message edited by: Vergeltungswaffe ]
  11. He's probably too busy having to police the Wild Bill's of the world to do nearly as many constructive things as he'd like.
  12. AK, hope that didn't sound like a complaint, because it wasn't. Just trying to be helpful. I am totally in awe of what you do at the Depot.
  13. Speaking of which, played a totally random QB with computer pick. I play more often as German than Soviet, but played Soviet for a little change. Computer gave me captured Panthers, AI had captured T-34's. Talk about deja vu.
  14. Would be nice, but still not possible, however, FO's can observe from vehicles now, and that is definitely nice! [ October 15, 2002, 12:43 PM: Message edited by: Vergeltungswaffe ]
  15. I agree with your assessment. Tired/exhausted troops fight poorly, and I suspect that was the problem.
  16. BD, to actually answer your question, no, there is no way to measure the distance between point A and point B unless there is a unit at one of them. The best thing to do is use the LOS tool to approximate the distance between the two points you are curious about in the 7 or 8 view, depending on how far you are trying to measure, the 6 view if its a very short distance.
  17. Admiral Keth, for the last two days, I have been unable to review any of the CMBB operations. You may be well aware of this, but just thought I would mention it, in case.
  18. Ah, I recall that cammo scheme now. Sitting at the office, couldn't remember if I had ever seen one quite like that. And the one I referred to as greyish could easily be called grey green, chalk it up to a bad choice of description, but I definitely like it.
  19. Nice variety. I particularly like the greyish one. Are the greyish one and the cammo one based on actual pictures, or your own thoughts?
  20. This will be my first online stop-of-the-day from now on. Bless you, Gary.
  21. I'm highly in favor. It should just replace Tips and Tricks since those topics are perfectly appropriate for this forum and appear here anyway. The scenario forum is very important and shouldn't be touched.
  22. A bit like the black and white stripes on many allied tactical aircraft for D-Day. There for recognition purposes to avoid friendly fire.
  23. One question, Affentitten, did you put plenty of suppressive fire with covered arcs on the trenches prior to and during the assault? If not, the excellent job you did in getting your troops up close, undetected would go for naught. If you did, then you did everything right, and just had bad luck, unfortunately for your men. Not a single man came down the hill. Damn.....
  24. When people are shooting at one another at close range, there is not a lot of aiming going on, so hits aren't as prevalent as you might think. However, when one or the other squad decides they've had enough and gets up to run, you will see people who are no longer being shot at actually use the sights on their weapons. While playing last night, 3 squads of German infantry came across a single Soviet squad, and traded fire at very close range for about 40 seconds, at which time it became known that there were 9 of 11 men remaining in the Soviet squad. In the 41st second, the Commies decided they had had enough and jumped up to run. Within 9 seconds, 7 more casualties, versus the 2 that occurred in 40 seconds. I think this is excellent realism, personally.
