  1. By all means gents, DO carry on. Fascinating stuff. John + Dr. Rosenrosen, thanks for the info and the website. So a tank loader can lose an arm, finger or hand if he fiddles to much after the "up" command? [ March 01, 2003, 03:18 AM: Message edited by: WineCape ]
  2. Badger, A dangerous "little" story. Thanks for sharing it! I suppose the modern SABOT charge do pack a mean exploding punch. Any idea what mm thickness they can penetrate if fired from 120mm guns?
  3. Scott, Much obliged. No worries about hi-jacking the thread. If 2 tankers meet up because of the thread, I say fight it out via CMBB/CMBO Very interesting. Thanks for all those that chimed in. 4. Been playing CM now for almost 3 years, in all this time taking for granted the gunner’s smooth firing/loading operation of the tank about to fire. Do loaders ever screw up in loading the breech, apart from the wrong shell type? Anyone here know the exact firing procedures and commands issued by the TC to their tank personnel while in combat or about to engage/fire enemy tanks? Modern or WWII tanks. Just wondering what each person’s job is within the tank when an enemy tank is sighted, apart from sweating and praying that the first shot is on target? The TC’s orders to his gunner, the process of the gunner loading the breech, getting range, off-loading the shell from the breach. These shells are hot after a discharge, are they not? I assume there were a set of firing SOP to follow for WWII TC’s depending on the different tanks and how do they differ from Axis tanks regarding actual fire procedures? Would be interesting to know from those in-the-know or had experience of firing against enemy tanks in combat. Sincerely --Charl [ February 28, 2003, 06:43 AM: Message edited by: WineCape ]
  5. Hello KR, I have been informed by SA Postal services (when I queried the wine prize transit times) that all containers that went out before 1 Jan. 2003 and up to 2 months before this date was delayed. So please expect delivery times closer to 20 bloody weeks. Sorry gents, but SA had one of the busiest seasons ever in all manner of exported goods, and while I envy the Singapore and Hong Kong container terminal through-put per day, SA does not even come close if things were send via the very slow snail mail method. Latest estimated time of arrival being middle May 2003. Ask Kiwi Joe, he had to wait even longer, but he got the wines...eventually. 6. As an avid PBEM Helper user before this new current invention/idea by Fuerte (and Karch), I will be following this thread with curiosity. Well done Fuerte! If you can make it work via a practical, fool-proof way, consider yourself richer with 6 bottles of South African wine as just reward for your current and continued efforts with your e-mail program. 7. Ahh, but this is a non-issue, as we are playing for South African wine!
  8. My humble take on the artillery discussion. More of a Side note: I have read numerous threads for the past weeks and though the debate is mostly relevant or interesting at least, we need not to lose the focus IMO. My focus/comment is more based on GAME mechanics in general for the PLAYER in the Combat Mission series. While I’ll leave to learned others (as per this thread) the more in-depth discussion regarding artillery doctrine per se, my comments are based on improvement, visual or otherwise, in the execution of FO artillery orders for the PLAYER. We need to make the PLAYER USE of artillery in future CM’s more exciting or “sexy” It is pure JOY to use, maneuver, order etc. infantry and AFV’s around in CM. They are simple, effective and each order is executed to the best of the AI’s ability. There is a multitude of orders for these combined warfare components and a lot of effort has been spend programming on them. Artillery is much more approximated than the other arms of combat, so admitted by BFC. What do we as CM PLAYERS need: We players need more visual aid/control over certain aspects/mechanics of the artillery usage - also a sort of wish list if you prefer. Realistic PLAYER aids/suggestions, which still fall within the scope of realistic artillery usage: (1) The ordering of only X amount of shells to be fired from the total load-out. (2) The spotting round should be visual to players, say a taller smoke/colour plume or whatever Charles fancy is more appropriate for easy spotting. The searching for a spotting round is currently not practical as a PLAYER aid. (3) Setting/selecting basic firings sheafs by the player. … to name a basic few examples. We know and trust BFC to adhere to realistic approximations of artillery execution in CM, but we as players need less artillery approximations currently in CM or at least better/more interesting ideas of using/executing those given approximations for the player as currently envisioned by BFC. Jon, your insight and discussions are always interesting. While it is true that something or other MUST be approximated in CM for the sanity of Steve and Charles, as there is only so many programming hours in the day, we need also to focus how to help Charles implement improved approximations for artillery in Combat Mission for the PLAYERS in general, based obviously on realistic use of artillery doctrine. To this end, many forum members (including you) suggested many an idea before. If Steve can give us an rough insight what ideas Charles/BFC are currently entertaining – if any at this moment - or worth entertaining given Charles’ programming priorities for CMx2 for artillery, then we might steer the discussion on artillery to more concrete and fruitful direction for the sole programmer, Charles. 9. How apt, the "Magnus Effect" as highlighted by Picklehead above refers to inter alia a cricket ball, given that the World Cup Cricket kicks of tomorrow here in Cape Town when SA plays the West Indies. "The commonly accepted explanation is that a spinning object creates a sort of whirlpool of rotating air about itself. On the side where the motion of the whirlpool is in the same direction as that of the windstream to which the object is exposed, the velocity will be enhanced. On the opposite side, where the motions are opposed, the velocity will be decreased. According to Bernoulli's principle, the pressure is lower on the side where the velocity is greater, and consequently there is an unbalanced force at right angles to the wind. This is the magnus force. The head spins. I suppose that #(2) on my original post could be programmed in future CM's by setting the %Hit chance to 5%-10% less (or whatever) for windy long range duels above certain ranges? Now we will have more people cursing the accuracy of their AFV's. Careful what we wish for...
  10. Jussi, Charles drinks South African wine: i.e. therefor he is bright; it might not be beyond him to entertain such possibilities for future CM worlds you know... Cheers! Charl
  11. Me thinks that Charles and Steve need more SA wine to smooth the edges and keep on the great programming/interaction with their client base. Fuerte, I'm using your PBEM Helper and it is a God-send. Thank you. But if Charles tells you that he tasted "bacon" in the Kanonkop Pinotage 1998, you better believe him... Regards, Charl Theron
  12. It just struck me that it might not be beyond Charles to code this in CMBB: Does a high wind setting increase the resistance of a fired AP round on relative longer range duels with AFV's, so much so that the AP shell might not penetrate? (1) If an AFV is shooting "directly into the wind" over a distance of, say 1000m+, will it affect the AP penetration possibilities if the fired shell was very close to its max. penetration envelope without wind? (2) And by the same token does the wind affect the accuracy of a shot over relative longer distance duels? Sincerely, Charl Theron [ February 07, 2003, 01:39 PM: Message edited by: WineCape ]

  15. Keep 'em coming. Always good to hear what's going on in the CM world and I'm an avid reader. 16. So it seems that the "current 5-speed settings" for turret rotation speeds are still going to be the best aproximation for the next release of CM. Just too many factors involved to set an arbitralily x-second turn for each AFV's turret based on some (rather scanty) grog info out there. Oh well, I suppose testing the penetration abilities of the glory AFV's after WWII were more interesting than turret speeds...
  17. Yup, you Andrew Fox. The modder gentleman. Send me your address and I'll send you 6 bottles SA wine. No plonk BTW, just the good stuff, as I realised that I have so much of your mods on my HDD that it is abouth time that you get rewarded for your many hours of CM dedication. E-mail is in the profile. That's it! 18. Jaws, Brightblade, I realize there will be a lot of factors involved, even among the same type of tanks but with different quality crews. Question is, do the well-known authors on ground combat warfare during WWII (and after) have any figures on rotation speeds at all published? Or are the rotation speeds almost non-usable: i.e.rotation speeds are so dependant on crew quality that each tank (same type) will always have different rotation speeds and thus it is not worth simulating to a higher degree than what it already is in CM? If simulated more closely than the current "Very fast, fast" for all tanks, it will make for more "interesting" and realistic tank duels, obviously modified by crew quality. Ahh, so many requests on one man. Poor Charles, he has his work cut-out now for the next 15 years... Sincerely, WineCape
  19. is there just to little Grog info floating around for the next CM game regarding these stats in seconds, i.e. how long it takes for the turret of a specific AFV do the full rotation. Or is the existing "Very fast, fast, medium" etc. considered enough of an aproximation for BTS/BFC?
