  1. Hello Lars, Moraine, Thanks for the fast feedback. I'm not clued up that much, but I do know that it should be a multi-zone unit, thus no zone restrictions - as Lars pointed out, Zone 0 it seems. SA falls in ZONE 2, but specifying this specific zone has it own problems, because if I buy a specific Zone 2 (SA) recording unit then I cannot play USA DVD's bought online! Will this is the assumption anyway. Thus, I prefer a zone-free/multizone/Zone 0 Sony unit. Again, thanks for the quick responses. [ November 22, 2004, 07:46 AM: Message edited by: WineCape ]
  2. Ted, Yankee, much appreciated: Yankee, you seem to be on the correct track with regard to multi-zoned units: In essence, and as I understand it, if I buy the SONY DVD recorder in the USA, the unit will (probably) be coded/zoned to only play DVD software that has the USA zone specification (USA=Zone 1) on it. Thus I probably will NOT be able to play South African DVD’s on the USA-bought DVD recorder. Is this assumption correct? Since I want to play South African DVD’s (legally bought here in South Africa), I suppose it’s best to cover this issue with the SONY electronics seller in the USA by: - Phoning SONY retailers directly (online retailers or brick-and-mortar Sony dealers) to ask if the SONY RDR-HX900 can be changed to a zone-free/multi-zone unit – and if so, whether this can be done before buying (less trouble to you) or after buying the unit. With regard to the latter, according to SONY SA, they are aware that it can be done through a second party electronics shop, but SONY is obviously duty-bound not to disclose these electronic dealers, whatever there reason. I doubt whether online retailers are aware that the SONY RDR-HX900 is probably zoned only for USA DVD playback. But then, they might be able to help you… Thus I need you to ascertain: Is the RDR-HX900 a multi-zoned/zone-free unit (can it play legitimate DVD’s bought in South Africa), if not, where can it be changed (can the online or offline retailer do it themselves?) and if not, how do you go about changing it at a second electronics dealer? PS: I know that if I want to buy DVD’s software online from a USA website, I must specify specifically that I want a “zone-free” DVD, otherwise the software will not play on any South African hardware. Much appreciated in advance. Charl

  4. Seanachai, have patience, will ya? Yup, it's that time of the year again, and my wish list has just been updated. Can the Pengville help? Maybe U can help, maybe not. I’m looking for the new SONY DVD recorder (product code: RDR-HX900). Problem 1: They cost the equivalent of $1,500+ here in South Africa, and they are not readily available. In the USA they go for $799.00 and less. I can buy one on Amazon.com online, but they cannot freight them to SA, probably something to do with the DVD zonal restrictions, which brings me to the second problem: Problem 2: Is it possible to find a SONY RDR-HX900 in the USA that is hardwired/programmed to be “zone free/multi-zoned” so it can play any DVD from any regional/world zone? I don’t think USA online retail shops will be of much help here, unless you phone them direct and ask about the multi-zone capability specifically. I’ve phoned SONY South Africa and the marketing manager say it’s possible to change them from e.g. Zone 1 (USA) to zone free/multi-zone, but SONY themselves will not do it here. If you can find a zone free/multi-zoned RDR-HX900, could you help me out via the following procedure: 1) I’ll bank transfer the cost of the RDR-HX900 unit to your account, the freight charge to your USA address (if it needs to be delivered) as well as the packaging/onforwarding air freight cost to me in South Africa beforehand. 2) Since it is a Xmas gift for me wife (and for my 2 daughters to play their Walt Disney DVD movies - moi will use it certainly too!) it will be appreciated if it could reach me before the actual big day. Anybody able to help out here on the forum? 10. Capt T, As winner of the one Finalist RoW IV section I need you to send me your delivery details as well as social security # for delivery of your RoW prize. Reason for your social secury number, as one gent asked earlier, is as follows, if you want to stomach a long-winded reason that is: The USA Food & Drug Administration needs it - via their “Prior Notice” online website which I fill in at https://www.access.fda.gov/oaa - when the wine enters the USA via JFK airport. All wines from South Africa via TNT first go through this airport by air before being re-directed. All consumables (even dog food!) needs to go through an online “Prior Notice” process, due to the USA’s Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, effective 12 Dec 2003, with the added details of social security numbers of recipients being needed. The act stipulates that any importation in or through the USA of food/drink articles must be notified to the FDA prior to arrival on US soil. As a consequence, any shipper (like me) must register on the above FDA website and this Prior Notice certificate must be completed before shipping. Life sucks even for us foreign wine merchants after 9/11! 11. Hello, Congrats to the winners of ROW IV as well as all those participants that have stuck it sportingly to their opponents one way or another! Capt T, Heavy Drop and WN please send me your delivery details (and contact numbers) so that I can arrange their wine preferences as well as shipment details. (email in profile) I believe I've already send to the scenario designers the invitation for a "wine thank you" via email. Let me know who will co-ordinate the goodies state side. BTW, do the designers live all in the USA? Kingfish, I need *relatives* living outside your damn Florida everdry state... Just sold my house to an UAE investor for a tidy 115% return over 23 months, akin to winning the state lottery here, for me anyway. So cost at_the_moment not an issue, hehe. Will contact you after RoW XVI~ for ideas when the well has dried up. PS: Anyone know where I can buy a Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 (nF3 Ultra) motherboard in the USA while the going is still good? To create brand-new scenarios, battle tested in tourney format with the high volume of AAR feedback is surely the highpoint for any scenario creator. Rest assured there is no scenario better tested for public consumption then the “RoW tested + approved” version. My sincerest thanks to the Boots & Track scenario creators. A commander of men requires these same qualities in even greater measure and in addition must be outstanding in his toughness, devotion to his men, instinctive judgement of terrain and enemy, speed of reaction and spirit. In General Rommel, these qualities were embodied in rare degree, and I have known no other officer in whom they were so combined. --Lieutenant-General Fritz Bayerlein, Chief-of-Staff and later Commander of Deutsche Afrika Korps [ June 21, 2004, 09:01 AM: Message edited by: WineCape ]
  25. Hello Kip, This (possible?) addition will certainly be a stunning achievement on its own, I agree. But I think that BFC knows already in what direction they want to go with CMII, with the help and input of all here on the forum to guide them. BFC still adheres to the under-promise and over-deliver concept, which is refreshing indeed and makes sense. Hence their reluctance to promise anything concrete yet with CMII. I rather not have expectations of vague promises from BFC and then all falls flat because so-and-so feature was not included in their next engine release, as per so many gaming companies the last few years. BFC will surprise us again - pleasantly. Of that I have no doubt in my mind. Sincerely, Charl Theron [ June 21, 2004, 05:00 AM: Message edited by: WineCape ]
