1. Final score in on my game with CDIC. 82-18. I rolled over him like a fat girl on her way to a Ho-Ho box. Jarmo is messing with me and it is very annoying. He has gotten way too lucky. jeff

3.
quote:
Originally posted by John Kettler: As Shandorf correctly noted, the miserable fog nullified much of my experimental force buy. At a stroke, it neutralized my onboard mortars, semigutted my FOs (weren't in stone buildings like Shandorf's; I couldn't afford to expose them to a hail of direct and indirect fire), neutralized my sharpshooters, and deprived me of most of the utility of my heavy weapon platoon, since long reach MG weapons had to fight at point blank range. I did buy several jeeps to move MGs around. There is another aspect to this which hasn't been addressed. That's maneuver and fire support units bought for a given expenditure. Shandorf claims he bought almost no support. Examination of the map shows he had: 81 mm mortar FO (150 rds), 105 mm howitzer (60 rds), 120 mm mortar (50 rds). All were Regular. Cost? 366 points. By contrast, I had: 81 mm mortar FO (200 rds), 105 mm VT FO (80 rds?), 155 mm FO (25 rds), all Regular troops, at a total point cost of 478. Thus, his heavy rounds outnumbered mine 2:1, against far more lightly protected and exposed targets. In the lighter stuff, I had more rounds, but he was able to bring down observed fire. Again, he was hunkered down most of the time. A Green SS rifle company cost him 268 points, a Regular one 327. My Green rifle company was 448 points. Had I been able to afford a Regular rifle company, that would've been 559, I believe. So, Shandorf had near parity in artillery at worst, or effective superiority considering FO observed fires. He had four AFVs against none for me (479 points, all Regular (almost exactly the amount he berated me for putting into fire support)) and still was able to field two full companies of powerfully equipped SS infantry. His squad: 2 x MG-42, 3 x MP-44, 1 x MP-40, 5 x Kar-98K. My squad: 2 x BAR, 1 x SMG, 9 x M-1. Such a deal! For the same money as the Americans, the Germans were able to field a force greatly superior in line units, HQ quantities, average morale and infantry firepower. They also had artillery parity or even superiority under the conditions, plus four front line AFVs to the Americans' none. My noninfantry support = 478 points. His noninfantry support = 845 (366 fire support + 479 armor). My crude analysis thus suggests that something may be out of whack on force costs. Had I scrapped my FOs altogether, I would still have been left with around two companies and a platoon or so of infantry only facing two very high firepower SS companies, still supported by the above FOs and the four AFVs. How is this even remotely possible? Shandorf, this isn't the Cesspool, so I think calling me a bastard here is not on, as the Brits put it. I think you'll find my standard of discourse here is high and that I don't resort to personal attacks, especially when I'm winning. Treeburst155, I'll send you the end of game file directly. Regards, John Kettler PS I still can't read the top link for the Invitational. Please post the list in this thread.

You failed to mention the Heavy weapons company you blew 554 points on or less if you deleted a few units . When I say support weapons I specificay meantioned Mortars and MMGs. That is where you went wrong if you would have spent that on a rifle company you might have faired differently. You spent over a hundred more points than I in Artillery which could have bought you that AFV. Also 2 companies of american Infantry with partial deletions up 150 point would buy you another AFV. The fog was your bane. I bought a light fast moving assult force and you bought a slower, more heavy firepower force. I went for manuver and you went for attrition. As for the bastard comment.. Come on.. you know me.. Don't take me seriously. How many times do I have to be so over the top beofre you realize I take little seriously. Besides.. I sense you want blood... Send me a set up and you can be the germans. Same conditions but a QB, okay? Jeff

7. You would be surprised how fast a Panther can spin it's hull. I had tht same shot on two of Fionn's tanks in one battle. One Panther failed to rotate the hull. He died. The one that did... it survived. Jeff

9. Why are you guys griping about gamey play? Any veteran player ov Cm worth his salt knows that if you play gamey you play to lose. I have challenged people to play gamey with me in the past just to prove I can still beat the snot out of them, so I just don't understand this at all. I play to win. Sure, I want to have fun but I still want to win. And I know better than anyone that if you follow sound military doctrine and stick to you battle plan you have your best chance of winning. There is nothing else as far as I am concerned. Jeff
10. Okay, I have to admit I have been a little busy, new job and all, ya know... So, to my surprise I stroll in here and first read the tourney is over and then it is on again, and THEN the thread is locked. What gives? I am going to try and get my games going here tonight but I need to know the status of the tourney before I do so. As for all this gamey play stuff... I have yet to see any tactics in a game I have played I would call gamey. There were a couple games I forgot to negotiate a rule and paid the price but I am not bitchin. I just say, "Oh well", and carry on like a good little soldier. So, if this tourney is on please post here Treeburst to the following and start a new thread please. If I see that then I will proceed with getting 3-4 new games underway tonight. Jeff
11. In regards to draws... Well, all my games now are turning out too close to draws it seems. Maybe its me? Maybe it's all the damn FOG maps I keep getting. Grrrr... Jeff P.S. I want some MORE games. Send me an e-mail at: jshandorf@mediaone.net. As for you lay-abouts that can't get back turns ASAP. You suck. [ 08-10-2001: Message edited by: Shandorf ]
12. Here is everything you want to know about the 7.92x57mm cartridge. This cartridge was used by the german Mauser Karabiner 98K, Gewehr 41, 43 and numerous other rifles as well as in aircraft, vehicle and infantry machine guns. As the german standard rifle cartridge it was called Infanteriepatrone 7,9mm ("infantry cartridge"), also known as the 7,9mm - Militärpatrone ("military cartridge") or as Mauser - Standardmunition 7,92x 57 (Mauser as the weapon company that introduced the ammo for its famous 98K rifle; 7.92mm is the calibre and 57mm the length of the casing (not the chamber as in the US); also, in germany a bore's caliber is measured from land to land). The total production of this cartridge during WW II was 10,475 million (that is over ten billion). Sometimes, esp. among angloamericans, it is also referred to as 8 mm Mauser. The fired projectile of the Infanteriepatrone had a typical initial energy E0 of 3,700 Joule (sS - projectile of 12.8g at a V0 of 760m/s) but could reach initial energies of over 4,500 Joule (some V-Patronen) depending on the concrete ammunition type and firing weapon. Between 80 and 90 % of all 7,9mm ammunition produced was of the 7,9 sS (sS for schweres Spitzgeschoss = "heavy pointed bullet") type; the complete cartridge weighed 27g, it was 80.6 mm long and contained 2.7g of gunpowder; the projectile weighed 12.8 g and was 35mm long. When fired from a MG34 or MG42 (as well as from the other rifles using the cartridge) it had a typical V0 of 755 m/s. The regular sS projectile had the following penetration performance: 85cm of dry pine wood at 100m, 65cm at 400m, 45cm at 800m and 10cm at 1,800m; 10mm of iron at 300m, 7mm at 550m; 5mm of steel at 100m; 3mm at 600m. The second most used type was the SmK (Spitzgeschoss mit Kern = "pointed bullet with core") bullet that measured 37.2mm, weighed 11.5 g and contained a hardened steel core (about 8% of all produced 7.9mm rounds). Another type was the SmK L'spur (L'spur = Leuchtspur = "bright trace" = "tracer") bullet that was the previous type combined with a tracer that burned for 800 to 900 m (a little less numerous than the SmK). In the picture at right a soldier is seen preparing a 7.92mm ammunition belt for a machine gun (presumably adding tracers at every seventh round). The lS (leichtes Spitzgeschoss = "light pointed bullet") which had an aluminum core and therefore weighed only 5.5g which resulted in a higher speed of V0 = 925 m/s but of course also in a shortened total range (the bullet was used mainly in the air defense role; about 4-7% of the total production), the lS-L'Spur which with a length of 37.2mm and a weight of 6.1g was again the tracer version of the lS (less than 1% of total production). A version produced mainly for use with the MG 17 as aircraft armament was the so-called V-Patrone which had an increased powder charge that increased the V0 by 15%. This ammunition type was available with the PmK projectile ("Phosphor mit Stahlkern" = "phosphor with steel core") or with the B ("Beobachtung" = "Observation") projectile contained a little phosphor and exploded upon impact, the latter ammunition type was also known as the B-Patrone and was used as an incendiary round; both types are not counted in the 7,9mm production . The final and most interesting (for our purposes) bullet type was the SmK(H). The H stood for Hartkern (hardened core), this was the armor piercing version of the 7,9mm Infanteriepatrone. The projectile had a length of only 28.2mm, weighed 12.5 g and contained a tungsten core that was 22.5 mm long. The propellant gunpowder of the shell was increased to 3.6 g. The bullet had a penetration power of almost 20mm of plain steel at a range of 500m (90° impact angle). However, production of this ammunition type ceased in March 1942 because of an acute shortage of tungsten; still, SmK(H) cartridges continued to be issued to the troops as late as February 1943. while it was still inproduction, this ammo type accounted for 1 to 2 % of the production of 7,9mm Infanteriepatronen. When the machine guns used the normal sS ammunition they achieved an armor penetration of up to 10mm and more at close ranges. Now, on to the machine guns themselves. Development of the german machine guns went towards a general purpose machine gun, therewith abandoning the differentiation hitherto between light machine guns carried around by the assaulting infantry and heavy machine guns that were intended as stationary support weapons. First developments in this direction were the MG 29 and the MG 30. The latter was not accepted by the german armed forces but by the austrian army; therefore, after austria became part of the third reich, the Wehrmacht eventually had this weapon too. It was also produced during WW II in a small production run for the finnish forces. Another development by the companies Mauser and Metallwarenfabrik Kreuzlingen led to the LMG 32 that formed the basis for the MG 34. That should do it. Jeff
13. LORAK! Please scribe the follwing: jshandorf with the kung-fu grip: WINNER Yesterday's furby Seanchai: Loser. Must run. Jeff
14. The problem is that Shermans and earlier model Amis tanks did not have an independent drive system for each track. Thus a Sherman could not turn in place. The Panther and Tiger and tanks could. The Shermans and other Allies tanks could only lock one track and spin the tank in a wide circle. So historically you are getting a leg up as far as the Shermans go because of the game’s engine. I suspect in the engine rewrite they will change this. Jeff
15. Historically you would only get a flak attachment (6x 20mm) for an infantry battalion. Otherwise you would get none. So try and keep the flaks to a minimum I would suggest. Jeff
16. Well, the only battles of major interest are my fights with Fionn and SuperTed. Fionn: Like a champion prize fighter he has me against the ropes as he pounds away mercilessly on my kidneys. I am finally getting a few jabs in here and there but I will have to struggle mightily to pull out a draw. SuperTed: So far during this battle he’s been anything but super. I have decimated one platoon and I have another two fighting for their survival. He has managed a frickin lucky schreck shot at 160 meters during night but the trade off is acceptable. Jeff

18. Well, Treehead, considering his nick is Winecape I would bargain that his wine cellar is quite large and full to boot. Ahhh.. Reading the latest string of posts it seems I have climbed higher for the prize of Good Sportsman. Muahahahaha! (<-JOKE) Fionn can be a grueling teacher I must admit. Even I have lost my temper in a game or two with him, but alas, it means nothing. Tis a game after all. Speaking of Fionn and games.. I have seen the map that Fionn and I are to battle on. All I can say is that either I will be fighting for my life after turn 2 or I will be sweating nervously many turns into the game. I have one word to describe this map...FOG. I hate fog. Fog hates me. I will say nothing else since Fionn is a master at picking apart my words here and may deduce my plan. As for my games.... The depraved Aussie Mick In all truth I don't know if Mick is an Aussie. It is just that I can't help picturing Paul Hogan in a leather vest when I think of him. Anyway, our battle continues to be a game of cat and mouse but I have made a few moves to force Mick's hand. My 105mm VT arty continues to pound his troops on the reverse slope of the gargantuan hill that dominates the center of the map. Only 4 more turns left in this one. The ending should be quite bloody. Manpie His super stealth KT KOed one of my tanks and then abruptly turned on its cloacking device and disappeared from the map. Quite annoying if you ask me. Berli (The Tourney Whippin' boy) Hey, I didn't come up with the title... I have wounded him grievously, but I fear I have back a wounded animal into a corner. But hopefully I can put the dagger in him and twist it vigorously within the next few turns. SuperTed Well, since the pool table battle was tossed out, I won it BTW, we are prepared once again for a new battle. I still need to deploy. Claymore Sent my picks of to Mike. Haven't heard a thing back. Fionn His over confidence is his weakness. My faith in my ability is mine. BTW... Since it appears that Fionn is taken the tourney to school, so to speak, I say we have a prize for the tourney contestant that loses to Fionn by the least. Jeff
19.
quote:
Originally posted by Lorak: Shandorf, Some might take offense at you thinking that all irish people like whiskey and have tempers. Take me as an example. I'm irish. Now it is time in court for a little sing song. a one and a two God loves a hanging, thats why he gave us necks. It tightens up your vocal cords, it losens up your pecs. Ok, enough of that. Bring out the next whore....err witness.

You forgot waffles, Lorak. Don't forget the waffles. Jeff
20. Apparently some of you took my poke of fun at Fionn as truthful and factual. In no way is it. Personally I think Fionn is a great guy and I miss his posts here. I was merely having a bit of fun with someone I know casually through e-mail. To say the least I was shocked and offended when Maximus came in and said I was right. Not only were Maximus's comments offensive I find it disturbing when he agrees with me. Makes me feel all dirty and violated. My apologies to anyone that might have though I was personally attacking Fionn, which I wasn't. There the air looks clear to me now Lock me up, Matt! Quick! I hear the trolls coming, and they are hungry! Jeff
21. Well, well, well... sneak out of work to catch Kiss of the Dragon at the movies and the little ragamuffins like Maxipad take the advantage to pull their head out their ass to squawk a bit, like the poser boy he is. Taking that personal cheap shot at Fionn in the DNS thread was lower than even I care to go. Not even in the Cesspool does one do such a thing. Obviously he is making up for the lack of something. I wonder what it could be? Is he short on wit? Intelligence? Or is it the extra pair of socks he goes through every day? One has to wonder. While I enjoy a good teasing and poking even I draw the line at personal attacks. Sure Fionn's Irish...and I bet he likes his whiskey... am I bastard for alluding to it? No. In no way did I intend for my comments to be taken personally. That is, unless I am referring to Maxi-munch. Then, I don't care. Apologies to any I might have offended. And yes…that includes you Fionn. Mind you, this doesn’t mean I am not gonna mention the whiskey.. and the temper…from time, to time. Jeff
22. GAME UPDATES Well, this is rather strange posting an update here, but with your pleasure, or disdain, I will proceed. Berli Ahhh, his, I must say, masterful initial assualt with Shermans and mounted engineers laid a heavy blow to my 251/1 mounted panzergrenadiers. You see we are playing a map with heavy woods in the center divided by a single river which is only crossable with vehicles by a lonely bridge. The main flag is on the bridge with four minor flags forming a box around this bridge. Two on my side, two on Berli's. His initial assault practically wiped out my grenadiers and thier HTs, but lucky I anticipated trouble and had a few reinforcements nearby. With them and the now vaulted UBER schreck unit his 5 tanks lay in waste and he now atempts an odd flanking manuver. I suspect he has atleast one more trick up his sleeve since I doubt Berli is a one trick pony. The depraived Aussie Mick This battle is so far a game of cat and mouse. A large hill dominates the center of the map with two major flags atop it. So far Mick has attempted reconing the hill. Needless these forces were quickly routed with a precision arty strike. Time is slowly ticking by with so far neither of us show thier hands. I have a feeling the lst few turns of this one will be quite bloody. Manpie He hides. He waits. He drops arty blindly. Either I am walking into a trap or I am winning. Who knows? That is all... Jeff [ 07-18-2001: Message edited by: Shandorf ]
