3. I actually think that the range of crew reactions in CM is quite broad and accurate, IMO. For every time I've seen a tank crew panic and do something stupid, I've also seen a tank crew do something smart or even heroic. In a game I was playing against the AI a couple of days ago, quite late in the game I set up a scratch ambush with a regular zook and a half squad of regular US infantry to take out a veteran Puma that it was trying to work back towards my Batallion HQ and assorted artillery FOs. The zook held fire until the Puma was about 20m away, and nailed it with the first shot. Now imagine my surprise when the Puma crew jumped out of the wreck under fire from my half squad (which had a BAR, btw, so no lack of short range firepower), charged the 20m to my position, routed the half squad and took the 'zook team prisoner. Now THAT was extremely frustrating. So from my own experiences playing CM, I'd say there's nothing really wrong with the crew AI. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

Before the American entry into both World Wars 1 and 2, American public opinion war strongly anti-war. The feeling was that they were both European wars, and that American boys had no reason to go off and die for European interests. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

Did they knock you out when you flew across the Atlantic or what? Do you just remember drinking a case of Labatts and waking up in Hamburg the next morning naked, covered in blood and with your arm around a dead male hooker? Otherwise you might remember the big pretty silverbird you got in that was loud and then went high. That was called a plane. You got in it and it flew you to Europe. I did the same thing, except with less drool. 13. No one is arguing that mortars are capable of indirect fire. The argument is that allowing completely indirect fire - ie, not within the command radius of an HQ units - would be unrealistic because an RL commander would not have the same omniscient view of the battlefield as you the player. And, to be honest, if you believe that mortars are useless, the problem is with your tactics. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

 16. Wrack it up, Lorak the Liquored- Morse-win Chup-loss The lawyer managed to pry a tactical from me. Oh well. At least I got in a few swift kicks to his tacticals before I went down. 17.
quote:
Originally posted by Mr. Clark: Thanks Charles! ... and to everyone else here, I cannot believe we argued through 6 pages of posts to come to the conclusion that was stated in the opening post... and that CM is fine the way it is, as the quirk (aiming for a weak, hull down turret) is a real life one.

Hrm, you've been on the board since September and you can't believe it? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
 18. Also, how exactly do you add blood to CM? When a soldier's hit, should a big gout of blood spurt out? Wow, you mean I can see that at 500m? Damn my eyesight's good. Or should there be a nondescript red splotch on eliminated unit figures? How is that any more realistic than the current lack of blood? Yes, blood is a part of war. And if I want to see flying viscera I can probably go sign on with Doctors Without Frontiers and see plenty within 24 hrs. But in a tactical simulation, what good does it do? Does it make my experience any more realistic? IMO, nope. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.

 21. The patch to having Allied tanks use tungsten more readily when they have itis, IMO, a good thing. I believe however that there is an ahistoric overavailability of tungsten among Allied tanks in CM, and the change to tungsten is somewhat highlighting this. IIRC tungsten was only officially issued to TD units. The rationale I've heard for giving tungsten to Allied tanks other than TDs in CM was that tank commanders would mooch tungsten from TD units. As far as I know however, this wasn't reflected in the TO&E. However, there are plenty of instances in which units used equipment which wasn't in the TO&E which aren't modelled in CM. One example off the top of my head was American infantry units unofficially adding as many automatic weapons as they could carry, including more BARs or in some cases captured German weapons. Basically I feel that the change to tungsten has solved some problems but created others. Allied tanks are now far more effective at killing German armor than I believe they were historically. What I'd propose would be to either go back to the official ammo loadouts and restrict tungsten to Allied TDs only or at the very least to make tungsten considerably less available to non-TD units than it currently is. I'm sure someone's going to accuse me of being a German übertank apologist, and there's not much I can do about that. Except to say that I'm playing around 12 PBEM games right now and I'm playing at least half of them as the Allies. I'd appreciate feedback on this. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
 22. Chief - If you have infantry close enough to a tank, and if they're not suppressed or otherwise unable/unwilling to do so, they'll attempt to close assault the tank. This is represented graphically by your squads tossing hand grenades at the tank. This representation is an abstraction for someone throwing open the hatch and dropping in a grenade, or sticking a gun through the vision slits, or however else infantry might kill a tank. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
 23. Right. Looks like I was having problems sending emails containing attachments (don't ask me, it's the university's ISP, I just use it) a few days ago. It SEEMS to have cleared up now. If you sent me a file a few days ago and never received a reply, drag your face off mommy's withered tit for a sec and drop me a line. Ta. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
 24.
quote:
Originally posted by Phoenix: Hmm...after all these months it's not until now I read that units firing AP can't destroy unarmored vehicles. Is this for real? If so.....why?

Hrm, actually, looks like I was wrong. Set up a test map with Daimler firing at Kubelwagens. In 15 turns the Daimler wound up with 10 kills...all from its MG. So yeah, I'd say something's a bit buggy there. It looks like what's happening is that the unarmored vehicles don't have different "hit locations" as armored vehicles do, so the shots aren't actually hitting the vehicles. With no blast rating, the AP shot is just burying itself in the ground around the vehicles. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh. 25. Hrm, no, I disagree with that actually. The Soviet Union mass produced lots of molotov cocktails. LOTS. IMO if these were simply represented as satchel charges, you'd have to either deny them to units other than engineers, which would create an ahistorical underavailability, or make satchel charges available to all units, which would make for some seriously weird gameplay. Molotovs are great for burning stuff, but they can't demolish a house nor clear a minefield. If you were arguing that they should be represented as part of the current way CM models close assaults, I'll go along with that, but I think making satchel charges and molotov cocktails interchangable would be a bad idea. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
