  1. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Vanir: I suppose a related question is do you find the Allies lack of mobile AA in CM (no M16 AAARGH!!) to be a significant disadvantage? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Actually, most Allied tanks are also mobile AA vehicles. That flexible Ma Deuce is actually excellent at killing Jabos. In the two scenarios I've played as the Allies against the AI in which the AI's had fighter-bombers, flex-mounted .50s on my Shermans have killed both fighters. Considering that air support is considerably more expensive for the German player anyway, I'd say that the Allies' lack of a dedicated AA vehicle doesn't put them in an disadvantage at all. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
  2. No. Unfortunately, this would be harder to implement than it may seem. It may go in for CM2. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Lah: [b Does the other player see the same victory score as I would, I'm sure this gives different scores to each player from banter with my opponents..?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> The victory score which you see is based solely on what you can see. For example, say you advance a platoon to a point 100m away from a VL which is, as far as you can tell, undefended. The VL will change to reflect the fact that you seem to have taken it, and the score will change. If, however, your opponent has a hidden platoon right smack on top of the VL which you can't see, the VL will still belong to him in reality, and the "correct" score will reflect that. The only time you'll ever be presented with a completely accurate score is at the AAR screen. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
  5. To just echo what MT wrote: I have absolutely no problem with anyone playing the game in any manner they want. It doesn't bother me in the least. I personally enjoy playing the game in a way I believe approximates historical WW2 actions as closely as possible, and as such I prefer to play people that feel the same way. It's no slight to folks who feel otherwise - y'all paid your money for the game, it's not my or anyone else's place to tell you the "correct" way to play. I don't like being misrepresented however. I never stated that anyone is "supposed to" memorize TO&Es, consult Achtung-Panzer! before giving their orders, or do anything else. Yet it seems like every time a "gamey" thread springs up, those of us who do enjoy sticking as closely to reality as possible get attacked for trying to force others to conform to our style of play. It's simply not true. Dr. Brian and MT, I'd like to thank you two for trying to keep this thread somewhat reasonable. I don't think it's a pointless discussion, otherwise I wouldn't try to wade into it each time it comes up. But unfortunately, it always gets needlessly polarized. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Henri: Now what worries me is this: apparently a player is supposed to know what the standard TO&E of every army in WW2 was, and buy his units in accordance to their proportion in the TO&E? Jeez, and I can't even remember what Fionn's rule of 75 is! <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> To be frank, I don't care what you know or don't know. Panther 131 asked a question which I attempted to answer, using a historical source to back up my answer. I even provided a link to the source I used. I don't recall saying anywhere in my post that if you don't know a TO&E, you're not as cool as I am, drive a ****tier car, and have a smaller penis. By some of the responses I've seen on this thread, however, it seems as if that's how my post and the posts of several other people have been interpreted. Well get the hell over yourselves. No one is attacking you. Play however you want. I believe that's all the "historical" people have been calling for this entire time. Before I bought my copy of CM, I had no idea what a TO&E was, let alone what they said. I did some research because I was interested, not to carry out some sort of slander campaign against people who choose to play the game differently than I do. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Panther131: I just wanted to know if buying five 81 mm mortors is gamey in a 800 point ME<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I wouldn't call it gamey (ie, it doesn't take advantage of a limitation of the game's code), but it is ahistorical. Here's a TO&E for US Infantry Batallions 1940-45: <UL TYPE=SQUARE> <LI>BHQ of 30 men, 3-4 jeeps and 4 light trucks. <LI>3 Rifle Companies each of: 1 CHQ of 16 men (and 3 bazookas) 3 Rifle Platoons of 40 men split into 3 sections of 12 men and an HQ element of 4 men. 1 Heavy weapons platoon with 3 60mm mortars, 2 MMGs and 1 HMG <LI>1 AT platoon with 3 AT guns and motorised tows. <LI>1 Combat Support Company with a CHQ of 16 men, 1 Mortar Platoon with 6 81mm Mortars (and 3 bazookas), 1 HMG section with 3 HMGs and 2 MMG platoons each with 4 MMGs. Notes: Prior to the introduction of the Bazooka AT weapon no AT weapon would be issued. AT guns in the AT platoon would either be 37mm or 57mm depending on the period. Source: britwar.co.uk In an 800 pt ME, with 5 81mm mortars, he couldn't have had more than a company of infantry. In which case, to be historical, he should have omitted the 81mm mortars and included the Heavy Weapons Platoon. Considering that 5 81mm mortars comprises almost all of a batallion's organic artillery support, I think it would be extremely unusual for batallion to commit that much support to one company, especially in a Meeting Engagement, which simulate, as far as I understand it, actions in which neither side was expecting to make contact in any strength. Hope this helps. 9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Berlichtingen: 2... They still have Pommies in their country... a problem the rest of the world has managed to solve<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> See, the funniest thing about living in England is the degree to which some folk hang on to their whole Anglo-Saxon thing. I suppose it would be impolitic to tell them that half of them are Danes and half of them are French, and the monarchy's German. Ha! And that, as they say over here, is a piss take. In other news - Seanahoochi-ya-ya-ya-ya has lost the only thing propping up his worthless attempt at a plan- the StuG of Doom. Now that it's gone I believe we'll see many dead German people very shortly. His Puma is being targetted from the rear (not an unusual circumstance for one of Snoochy's Viennese Mädchentruppen to find itself in, I'm sure) by my massive, thrusting, turgid .50 Browning and will soon be blown all to hell. Snoochy is also jealous of English beer, to which I say Chug-a-lug, old bean, wot? Squirrelichtingen hasn't set anything on fire yet, I'm starting to get worried about him. Although that could be due to the fact that his Wasp is dead, dead, dead. As is the Firefly he apparently thought would be holding off my tank advance. Throw in another Sherman and a Universal Carrier and I've got quite a decent bag so far. Only a few miscellaneous Churchills and Fireflies to dispatch, and I'll be sitting right pretty, drinking my good, good beer. Scrota has managed to expose most of his anti-tank assets in the first few turns of play. They will go die now. Not much else going on, except that he has a silly taste in movies. Heh. Gladiator. Evan Shando-rf is the luckiest, armored-car racing-down-well-defended-road bastard ever. Since I don't know where exactly he's planning on going with said armored car, it doesn't really throw much of a monkey wrench in my plans, but it's annoying nonetheless. Poor boy still thinks he's winning, which is amusing. Snoriarty is veeeeeeery slooooooowly advaaaaaaancing. Hop to it, soldier! All die soon. xoxoxoxo ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
  10. Modelling buildings as vehicles would introduce a whole muddle of weirdnesses. We'd get buildings getting knocked out by weak spot penetrations, failing to block LOS, and being rotatable in the pregame setup. I like Mace's idea better, although as he said, I think it'd be a CPU hog - moreso in the turn resolution stage than in the actual playback, I'd imagine, but even so I'm sure the game's speed would take a hit. I think the most likely solution for CM2 will be for BTS to include more types of buildings, including multi-tile buildings (ie factories) and higher buildings (the Stalingrad silo comes to mind). ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

  14. Oh come on. Placing CM in such a category is neither illegal nor unethical. And guess what? Most likely, the statement about CM selling fewer copies than most retail games is true. IIRC, last year, Jagged Alliance 2 was placed in the same category, as well as the Best Strategy category. After the Gamespot awards, sales of JA2 picked up dramatically. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

  17. Actually... I've seen quite a few photos of Kubelwagons with MGs mounted. Whether this was standard or whether it was a field conversion I have no idea. I also have no idea how common it was. But judging by what I've seen, it was done. I'll try to scan some photos and post them, but it won't be until tomorrow at the earliest. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
  18. Before I bought CM, the best game I'd ever played was System Shock 2. It's brilliant. It should be dirt cheap by now, so if you don't have a copy, buy one. I'm serious. 21. I was a flight sim geek before I found CM. I think I first heard of CM on a Desert Aces forum (before Sierra freaking cancelled it, but that's another story...). Of course, in my wisdom at the time I figured CM would be another over-ambitious wargame that would fall by the wayside. Pity I didn't check it out back then, or I could be a 4000 post forum god by now Anyway. I have no problem with games that emphasize quick reflexes, like flight sims. I enjoyed Doom, I loved Duke 3D, and the Marathon games caused me to fail a class and possibly to lose a girlfriend as well. More recently, System Shock 2 was the best game I'd ever played until I hit CM, and the few times I've played Counterstrike it's been crack-like addictive. CC2 was the only RTS game I ever enjoyed (and like many here, I played it to death when it came out), but even CC2 had a relatively sedate pace compared to the C&C style games, which I really don't like. My hand/eye coordination is decent, but it's not up to frantically band-boxing units and sending them off to kill things while making sure that invisible tanks aren't blowing up my base. And as others have said, the quality level for most "commercial" games in the past few years has been pretty dismal. Games that require patches to work properly aren't games that I want to spend my money on. When the good examples of the "twitch" genres come out, they can be awfully good. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

The other way to do it is to increase the playback speed, but that's usually unintelligible.
