Fairly OT: Better dead than Red...
Chupacabra replied to Chupacabra's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
According to this website, only 400 of the Mk-54 warhead were produced, production halted in 1965, and they were retired in 1971. So no chance of these things showing up in your local neighborhood intifada anytime soon, although it's not like we don't have plenty of nukes floating around anyway. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super -
...or at least, that's what you'd have to think to fire one of these bad girls. Trust the Cold War to produce something so unbelievably stupid.
quote:
Originally posted by Benny Manieri: The files ain't up yet, I'm having trouble trying to learn how to upload a file and set it up for downloads.....

1) Use ftp to upload the file(s) to your Geocities webspace. I think it's ftp.geocities.com. 2) Once it's up, add a link to it the way you'd link to a website. For example, if the file is called "profanity.zip", you'd add the line {a href="profanity.zip"}Download my profanity mod!{/a}. I couldn't figure out a way to use regular html carets without UBB thinking I was trying to actually link to something, so I used the curly brackets {}instead. Change the brackets to carets and you'll be in business. Also, make sure they file's not too big for Geocities. I think you've only got 15mb to play with. Aaaand finally I'm not sure how Geocities addresses bandwidth issues, so they might not be too keen on you putting up large files for people to download. The best route is probably to see if another CM site will host the file. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super -

Commandos and their US counterpart, the Rangers, were not used in their special roles very often. IIRC after Normandy both simply saw action as regular infantry. Again IIRC both also used the same TO&E as regular infantry. As Germanboy said, elite units can be for sneaky-sneaky type stuff. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

Dead FOs & continuing arty fire
Chupacabra replied to Bimmer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
IIRC Bullethead has commented on this, saying that modern arty FOs are in constant communication with the gunners, and if communication is lost, fire stops immediately to avoid the potential for friendly fire. Photography Mission: Urban Terrain In CM
Chupacabra replied to David Aitken's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I had the same thoughts when I was down around Hastings a few months ago. I think the issue is the 20x20 tile size, which simply doesn't offer enough variation per tile to display realistic cities. I think CM2 will either have to go tile-crazy and have a tile for every circumstance (ie- building + wall, wall + wall, wall + road + trees) or decrease the tile size. Stalingrad was such a muddle that 20x20 tiles as they're currently implemented will only portray a very watered-down version of it. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super -

quote:
Originally posted by Binkie: So considering I will be outclassed tactically and experientially, what purchasing/map strategy combo would give me the best chance? A plan that's simple to execute...

Most of the following will be under the assumption that your opponent, like many CMers who take the German side, will go tank-heavy. Smoke and cover are your friends. Don't expose your tanks to fire until they're very close to your enemy's tanks, and if at all possible, take flank or rear shots rather than head on. The M18 Hellcat is a cute little TD, and with Allied tanks more likely to use tungsten now, can kill most German AFVs easily. It's still best to avoid head-on confrontations, however, as the M18 has insanely thin armor. Use infantry aggressively to ambush his armor, killing it at best, causing it to button up at worst. Once buttoned, his tanks will be easier to kill. Figure out what the crucial terrain is and ignore the flags for the time being. It's much more important to seize the best ground than to go after victory points. Wipe your opponent out and victory will come anyway. Good luck! ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

Questions about Weapons
Chupacabra replied to Morphing Cell's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I'll try to go through this in as much detail as I can.
quote:
what is a rifle best for?

Short to mid-range fire. Rifles were the basic combat arm of all armies, and will do the bulk of the killing in most CM games.
quote:
A submachine gun?

Point-blank to short range fire. They rule the school at close combat. At anything much above 50m, they're fairly useless.
quote:
Why are there 10 semi-automatic rifles, a submachine gun, and an automatic rifle in an American rifle squad?

This is a combination which worked well in practice. The US Army's main rifle, the M1 Garand, was the finest semi-automatic rifle of the war. The submachine gun added some close-range punch, and the automatic rifle added suppressive firepower.
quote:
Why aren't all rifles automatic?

WW2-era automatic rifles, a la the BAR, weren't modern assault rifles. They attempted to fill the same role as light machine guns such as the English Bren or the German LMG42. That is, to pump out suppressive firepower to allow the rest of the squad to fire or maneuver. The BAR's muzzle climb when firing fully automatic was high, and so accuracy tended to be low. Moreover, the BAR only held a 20-round magazine, so that it ran out of ammo very quickly. The Germans developed the first modern assault rifle, the MP44, which saw service in limited numbers in 1944-45.
quote:
What is a recoilless rifle?

A recoilless rifle has openings in both the front and the back, so that when a projectile is fired, the projectile goes out the front, while the propelling explosion goes out the back. A bazooka is an example of a recoilless rifle.
quote:
What are the differences among an AT gun, a tank destroyer, and artillery?

AT gun: Not really sure how to descripe this, actually. Um, it's a gun, it sits on the ground, it kills tanks. Generally not moveable by their crews, they usually had to be truck or horse-towed. Tank destroyer: Mobile AT gun. Usually eschewed armor in favor of speed and firepower. Artillery: Long range, indirect fire. Drops High Explosive shells in salvos.
quote:
What is the advantage of a tank destroyer compared to a tank, when a tank can destroy other tanks too?

In the Allied case, it was a question of doctrine. Allied tanks were generally designed as infantry support units, and as such were not really given guns that were especially effective at tank killing. Tank Destroyers on the other hand were unsuitable for infantry support, but were good at killing tanks. Until the end of the war, most Allied tanks had woeful anti-tank capabilities. You will learn to love the Allied TDs as you play. On the German side, TDs were cheaper to build then Main Battle Tanks like the PzKw IV through VI series. It was a question of economics. Say your enemy's tanks cost 100 dollars, and your tanks cost 200 dollars. If your tanks can kill three or more enemy tanks before getting killed themselves, they're doing well, but if not, you're operating at a loss. Now say you can build tank destroyers for 50 dollars. Even if your enemy manages a 1-1 kill ratio, he's now the one losing money.
quote:
And where can I read descriptions of combat vehicles in WW2?

Try AFV News. Good luck! ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super -
