I'm using an 8mb card and I was using hi-res grass for a while. Worked fine, it was just slower than I wanted to deal with. 2. Don't worry, it gets more on-topic... In this week's issue of The Economist, they provide a brief, but positive assessment of the Half Life mod Counterstrike, which can be read online here. The interesting part, to me, is the last bit:
quote:
But perhaps what is most surprising about “Counter-Strike” is that it challenges the notion that all people want from online multiplayer computer games is mindless violence. In fact, it seems they want their violence in a more cerebral form entirely.

In this light, it'd be interesting to see The Economist's take on CM. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
3. IIRC DU dust is also highly pyrophagic (sp?), bursting into flame on contact with oxygen. Assuming that a tanker survives a penetrating hit on his tank by a DU round, he probably will have inhaled quite a bit of the dust, meaning all sorts of internal nastiness. DU also may or may not have a rather dire environmental impact, depending on which study you look at. Jane's has a faq on DU here. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
4. Jobs (and Apple) are great designers. The iMac was a coup. There's a reason PC developers all started designing see-through candy-colored computers after the iMac came out. Unfortunately, there's a gap between design and marketing, which Apple hasn't managed to bridge yet. It's a shame. I really do think the Mac is a better computer. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
5. Halo and Black&White are my excuses for buying a new computer. Doesn't hurt that CM'll be a whole lot nicer on a new computer either ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
6. MASH. The Robert Altman movie, not the smarmy TV show. Great performances, great direction, funny as hell. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
7. The trouble with Macs have always been price and software support. It's a vicious cycle: Macs are more expensive than PCs, so fewer people buy them, so fewer software developers develop for the Mac, so fewer people buy them, etc... Macs have survived mostly by having a few killer apps, mostly multimedia stuff. I've used both Macs and PCs for MIDI sequencing/digital recording, and I would happily chop off my nose rather than go back to using a PC for that stuff. I love Macs, but as cool as they are, Apple still hasn't figured out a way to take a market share that's not a niche. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

9. I would love to see a sci-fi game based on the CM engine. Probably more than I'd like to see non-WW2 historical CM games, actually. What can I say, I'm a geek. The last sci-fi strategy game that I really enjoyed (okay, so it was turn-based tactical, close enough) was the original X-Com, and that was...'93 I think? Mmm. X-Com tech tree and strategic level + CM tactical engine. Drool. Drool. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super [This message has been edited by Chupacabra (edited 01-09-2001).]
10. The debate between academic and popular writing isn't confined to philosophy. In fact I'd say that it's going on in just about any academic field you could mention. I'm taking an MA in International History at the moment, and every year, academia produces hundreds of absolutely turgid, unreadable books. Often when I tell people that I'm studying history, the response is something like "ugh, why put yourself through that?" as the only experience they've had with historical texts has been frustrating. However, these academic texts often contain important research which is impossible to ignore. I also think that there is a place for specialist literature within the field. Unfortunately, many academics are quite critical of popular history - not of specific works, but of the idea of popular history in and of itself. The argument tends to be that popular history is held to less academically rigorous standards than academic history. This is IMO a valid criticism - it's somewhat annoying to pick up a history book which doesn't contain a bibliography, for example, something which happens too often. And being a popular work, it can give a lot of people wrong ideas. My best example of this would be Daniel Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Executioners, which is fundamentally flawed on several levels, but being a bestseller, it misinformed a lot of people who wouldn't have the access to more accurate academic research on the topic. However there's also the feeling among many academics that writing popular history is a waste of time, or that any history written for a popular audience must necessarily be so diluted that it's no longer valid. This is one of my main criticisms of academia. Many so-called "popular" historians are excellent scholars who also happen to be able to write well. But for this they're often pilloried by academics. C'est la vie, I suppose, but it's unfortunate. Well, I think I've sidetracked this conversation enough ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
11. And now, the Cesspool's own Hiram! Shandorf was saying something about the gameyness of sending fast units into an opponent's backcourt? He'll get my surrender next turn, but he may want to sit in a corner for a while and think about what a bad boy he's been. Scrota is being vewy vewy qwuiet. Too bad his Hetzer isn't very good at sneaking. It's about to get flanked a lot. Berli was clearly in league with Squirminboy to produce a Completely Historical Scenario. Completely historical in this case meaning that the Allies get tons of artillery, tanks, and air support, and the Germans get some Bavarian grandmothers and a cow. I'm still winning. Ha! Machu Picchu is displaying his brilliant "overwhelm things with superior numbers" tactic learned at the feet of the finest Soviet generals in the glory days of 1941. Boreiarty is going to run out of time before his troops make contact with mine. Or possibly he'll shoot a massive amount of crank and get the energy to attack. Either way. SheepPetterNZ is.........waaaaaaaiiiiting......... Seanahoochi ain't doing much either. Yawn. Watch as he moves another tank...verrrrryyyy...slooooowly....into.... positiiiiiiioooon. For the love of god people, smoke some crack, get angry, and get a move on. Chop chop, let's go. Speaking of crack smokers: PolTroon you raggedy bastard, when are you going to send me a file??!??!!! If any of you think I owe you a file, you're clearly a gamey bastard who uses his crews as Insta-Lovetoys. I hate you, and I will use your entrails as wigs. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
12. Bocage fighting was historically extremely bloody, and the Allies got their asses handed to them quite regularly until they developed some specialised tactics for dealing with it. I don't especially enjoy bocage scenarios, but I think the majority play out fairly close to what I'd expect. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

14. Halftracks historically were not a very useful weapon. IIRC the US halted production of all halftrack models after 1944 and has never looked back. That said, they're useful as infantry movers as long as they don't get shot at by anything more imposing than a Mauser. Also, 150 rounds of .50 Browning goodness can be a huge asset. Mobile fire support is always handy. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

I know that, being from Canada, it's very hard to tell one frozen wasteland populated with hockey-playing Alannis Morisette listeners from another, but son, it's a baaaaad idea to tell a Brooklyner he's from the Bronx. The current response isn't bad, so I'll start setting something up. Please don't send me photos yet. I'll let you all know when I'm ready. I've got classes and such, so it probably won't be until the middle or end of the week. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
20. Kant is IMO the father of modern philosophy, although he's not the easiest read, but he's definitely worth reading. Hume is good fun. Locke and Hobbes are key for understanding 18th and 19th C. history. Nietszche's cool, Schopenhauer's depressing but interesting, and it's a shame Heidiger supported the Nazis, he has some interesting ideas. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

22. I've found that with a veteran spotter with LOS to the target, the spotter's clock runs almost exactly in sync with the game clock. If the spotter doesn't have LOS, I usually double the spotter's estimate to figure out how long it'll take. With higher quality spotters (ie crack and elite) I've had considerably faster service. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super

In any case, I am going to try to sleep off a few lagers now. I hope that when I wake, sullen and headachy, there will be many a cheerful "Why yes, friend Chup, what a lovely idea" posts to revive me. That and coffee. Coffee will be key. Thanks to those who've responded so far, and Kitty, thanks very much for offering to help. I may very well take you up on that offer ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
24. Have you ever wondered just how pasty-faced your opponent is? Have you ever dreamt of meeting someone with glasses as thick as yours? Have you ever had nightmares about hordes of chubby, acne-scarred wargamers invading your computer screen? Well look no further. Maybe I'm stupid, maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm drunk (well, I'm definitely drunk, but that's beside the point), but out of the whatever goodness is left in my blackened, shrivelled heart, I've decided to attempt to give something back to the community which I have alternately gloried in, mocked, and flung feces at monkey-style. This is a poll to give me a rough idea of how many people would be interested in a website displaying photos of other CM players. If I get a positive response, I will begin designing a site and collecting photos. A) This is a yes or no question: would you be interested in something like this or not. Please respond in this thread. This is still only a poll. Please DO NOT send me photos at this time. C) My html skills are extremely rudimentary. I can guarantee that a page will be set up, but I make no guarantees that it'll be pretty. In the interests of saving time I may even use a lame design program. That said, if I do get a positive response, would any of you budding webmasters be interested in either helping with or taking over the design of this site. Thanks for responding. ------------------ Soy super bien soy super super bien soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super
