  1. I don't think it was the best movie, but there was recently a remake of the Humphrey Bogart movie, "Sahara" (I think that's the name) The remake stars Jim Belushi. The movie is very Hollywood, but I thought it was pretty cool. It is about a motley group of allied soldiers fleeing from the advancing Afrika Corps. They decide to make a stand against a German recon force in order to buy time for the rest of the allied armies. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  2. ACTOR, thanks, I knew about the preference file, but you have confirmed what I thought about desktop vs. CM resolution. Maybe the higher desktop resolution won't look so bad on the 19" monitor. I can't wait to get this system. Hurry up Mr. UPS Man!!! ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  3. CrapGame, I tried what you said on my current computer, but when I reset Windows down to 1024*768 CM would not load 3D graphics. It led me to believe that Windows had to be in the same resolution as CM. Maybe it is just a limitation on my current system. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  4. Elijah, I was simply trying to answer your question. Based on your initial post I thought maybe you didn't know how mods work, so I tried to give you some very basic advice. As it turns out, I identified the problem precisely when I stated that you probably didn't notice that all US infantry (other than officers) shared the same portrait because it was a generic face before the mod. I have only been following this forum for a few weeks, but I don't think I have ever run into a nicer and more helpful bunch of people in my life. Please don't be so quick to attack those that are trying to help you. If you get advice that does not solve your problem try rephrasing the question. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  5. I prefer a village with gentle slopes and light trees, but that's because I like a mix of armor and infantry. If you like a lot of infantry you might want more trees or more hills. It is also fun to use mostly armor with lots of hills because you never know what you will find over the next hill. Obviously, if you want a long range tank battle then chose a flat map with few trees. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  6. If all your infantry units are Cpt. Miller, then you must have Tom Hanks as your U.S. Infantry portrait. All of the U.S. infantry should have had the same face before the mod, you probably just didn't notice it because it was a generic portrait. If you want a different portrait chose the one you want in the bmp folder and rename it to replace the Tom Hanks one. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  7. CrapGame, I ordered the 933 with 128MB SDRAM, 75GB HD, DVD, CD-RW, 19" monitor, and 64MB GeForce2. I couldn't help myself. It should get here by Thursday, but I am going out of town on Friday and won't be back until Wednesday night. I hope it doesn't get here until I am gone, otherwise I might not get around to packing for my trip. Does Windows have to be kept at the same resolution to play CM at hi res? I don't want to do word processing at such a high resolution. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  8. I was checking out the stats on some of my units after a scenario, and one of my Shermans had a hamsterschrek and a gerbilwerfer listed in the kill box. I can't find these weapons in the manual. Can someone identify them? ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  9. That looks like my neighborhood; some people have a gardener, some don't. I would really like to be able to place shell craters on the map. I wanted some while working on an Omaha Beach map. Those GIs could really use a bit of cover. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  10. Here's the full link to the article: http://www.nationalpost.com/artslife/story.html?f=/stories/20000814/369485.html ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  11. Sorry, Oddball, I didn't read your question closely enough. Maybe small arms fire can ricochet. Maybe what you witnessed was a desertion, or maybe the unterofficier shot one of his men for failing to obey an order. Maybe it is an X File. The possibilities in this game are endless.
  12. The sound you heard was the crew taking fire. One of the wav files does sound like small arms hitting armor, but I think it is just ricocheting off the ground or something. It was probably a poor choice of sound to use for this effect. If you listen to the files in the wav directory you will probably see that the sound you heard is grouped with the other sounds of infantry taking small arms fire. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  13. I'm not sure about the name, but I think it was "The Battling Bastards of Bataan." In the film the Japanese attacked Bataan with single winged planes, presumably Zeros and Vals, but in the close-up dogfight scenes the Japs are flying bi-planes. A slight error in continuity I guess. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  14. I didn't really know about CM until Computer Games Online announced it was ready to purchase. I bought it after looking at a few screen shots and determining whether my computer could handle the game. (It can, but barely - I just ordered a PIII 933 MHz tonight) I don't know how I didn't know about CM before. I think I recall seeing it mentioned in the CGO forums, but I guess I never checked it out. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  15. I didn't think the German troops were assaulting the town at the end of the movie. I thought they were advancing towards the beaches to attack the forces there. Granted, there should have been some recon ahead of the armor, but would they necessarily have spotted a handful of US Airborne? I think the first the Germans knew of the allied presence in the town was the two guys zipping around on the Kettenkrad (sp?). The reason there were no MG42s in the final battle was because the rest of the infantry moved into the town with the FAST command while the MG teams were unable to keep up because they were limited to the MOVE command. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  16. Yea, CG, that is basically what I am going for. The free monitor upgrade and the free CD-RW really make it a bargain. I wish I knew how long those offers are going to last because I won't be ready to order for a couple of weeks. I still want the 64MB GeForce though. I am sure CM2 will require it. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  17. Ski, there is a panic wav that says, "They're comin' right for us!" I know I've heard that line before. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  18. The American panic wavs are 00001010 - 00001019. You can just paste in the CC panic files if you want to. I thought of pasting in a few South Park wavs, but that would be "gamey," wouldn't it? ------------------ Ow, my leg! [This message has been edited by Pvt. Ryan (edited 08-06-2000).]
  19. Fox, I still think you need more troops, but I only played a few turns since my computer was slow and I was too impatient. I took the liberty of modifying your map slightly and completely redoing the troops. I can e-mail you my version if you want and you can see what I did. The problem with this scenario is the actual gameplay, but it certainly isn't your fault. No matter how you set this thing up, as the Americans you are basically leading a frontal assault by infantry against prepared defenses, or as the Germans you are just sitting back and letting the guns do all the work. This is probably why the game didn't ship with a D-Day scenario. It is very fun to watch though. I suppose there will be more tactics involved once enough US troops get over the sea wall. I think I have made that an impossible task for the Americans in my current version, but since I made them all crack troops they never give up. Another problem I have noticed is that the German pillboxes eventually run out of ammo. At that point the US troops can march in almost unopposed. I have tried to overcome this by having some of the secondary pillboxes hide until the Americans reach the barbed wire so as to conserve ammo. I also found a way to include US air support even with the fog. I chaned the weather to clear and added a FB, then switched the weather back to fog. The plane still attacks even in the fog. Watching this battle unfold is literally like watching SPR, especially with the sound mods. I am having so much fun with this thing. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  20. I was working on a scenario with heavy fog. The unit editor wouldn't allow air support because of the fog. I then switched the weather to clear, added a fighter-bomber, then re-set the weather to fog. When I tested the game the air-support was there and the planes were flying. I assume you could use the same method to get air-support with snow. ------------------ Ow, my leg!
  21. I am considering buying a new system to replace my PII 300, basically so I can fully enjoy CM. I am going to get a Dell PIII 933 4100 series. I was wondering whether to get a DVD drive or just a regular CD-ROM drive. I am not going to watch movies on my computer, so that is not an issue. Will DVDs become the standard software format in the near future replacing CD-ROMs? Also, is more than 128MB of RAM necessary? The upgrade to 256MB is $200 and the upgrade from CD-ROM to DVD is $110. I'd rather not spend the extra money if it's not necessary. Of course, I am going to get the 64MB GeForce2, which in itself may be overkill, but can you blame me? Any advice would be appreciated. 22. If it can start a fire in a building I am sure the backblast can cause brush or trees to ignite. Ain't this game the coolest?
  23. Yea, Fox, I was joking. It was a line from SPR when they torched one of the pillboxes. I listened to most of the wav files for CM. I haven't heard a lot of them in the game yet, but some of them are funny and/or cool. I am about to play your scenario now.
  24. ***SPOILER*** Don't read if you haven't played yet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Fox, I haven't downloaded your final version, but I will and I am sure it kicks ass. I am still fooling around with the map you put up yesterday. About 3 turns in and there were American troops at the beach exit. About 5 turns in a few squads of engineers were assaulting the pillboxes. About eight turns in the first pillboxes were getting knocked out. The pile of bodies in front of the barbed wire at the beach exit is incredible - and that's with one dead soldier representing each squad. The US armor has even't hit the beach yet. I think I made the Americans too tough. They are making D-Day look like a cake walk. I also made the weather clear so I could give the Americans some air support, but the background scenery is now too visible and ruins the ocean effect you accomplished so well. I will try to play your scenario tonght. Based on what you said I assume you made most of the same changes I did. The coolest thing was when one of the pillboxes was knocked out and every US unit on the beach opened fire on the panicked crew. I think I heard someone say, "Let them burn!"
