2.
quote:
Originally posted by bigmac: PBEM match (my first...GOD I LOVE THIS GAME!!!) and observed something unexpected. I had maneuvered my Daimler SC behind a house due to the presence of multiple halftracks. Next turn had it reverse down a slope and out of site in front of a copse of tall pines. Set it to "rotate to" face an elevated road which would expose said halftracks to me should they venture down the road as they passed in front of the house. Well, surprise surprise, the Daimler starts up the hill following the path laid down by my "rotate to" command... Directly into the path of a green 'Shrekt team. One shot from 150m later, one dead Daimler. Now, I've used this "rotate to" command many times, but have never observed the unit to proceed along the path as if it were a move command. Is this normal or was this some type of fluke? It is my impression that the rotate to command doesn't involve any movement with the exception of spinning in place to face the indicated direction. Regardless, this is the most awesome game I've EVER had the pleasure of playing. Anyone that would venture a piece of Big Mac can bring it... I don't mind playing allies at all either...

I'd say almost certainly you inadvertantly gave the Daimler a reverse command by mistake (ie. hotkey "R" is in fact reverse whilst "O" is rotate to) so your armoured car happily reversed up the slope towards the Panzerschrek team! That's my reading of the situation. Regards Jim R. ------------------ Inspector: "Does your derg bite?" Dog Owner: "No, my dog does not bite" Inspector: "Good derggie (pat, pat...growl- snap!)... 3.
quote:
Originally posted by 4FanAWOL: Thanks IPA for the posting. Don't want to get into a flame war but Monty was the first allied commander to defeat the germans in a major land engagement in WWII At the battle of El Alemain. His opponent was a fella called Rommel His victory raised morale of the civilians and military of the Allies. He proved that the germans could be defeated in battle. If he was cautious, it was as a junior officer on the western front in WWI that he experienced at first hand the waste of soldiers lives by callous commanders. High casulties for limited returns were unacceptable politically in the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc throughout WWII. For America with a population over 200 million and low casualties from WWI the situation was different. Post Vietnam, American military thinking has also changed.

It's interesting you should say that about Monty's experience during WW I bringing about his renowned cautious approach. If that was the case, then why Operation Market Garden? I just wonder what happenned in that period of Monty's life to cause an about face & have him backing a risky plan at best while others would describe Market Garden as having been reckless right from the start. Just curious. Regards Jim R.
 4. I'm hoping someone else out there has had this problem & knows how to fix it. I have a P III 500 with a Voodoo 3/2000 Video card & have 3 different versions of the game able to be played from the Combat Mission directory. (ie. ver. 1.01, 1.03 & 1.05). The frustrating thing is that ONLY under ver. 1.01 will it load the updated bmp files I've downloaded from Madmatts site & placed in the standard BMP subdirectory of Combat Mission directory. Whenever I play v 1.03 or v. 1.05 it must use the default bmp's on the CD as my CD driver goes beserk when playing these 2 versions yet is fairly quiet when playing v. 1.01. So clearly the updated bmp's are in place in the BMP sub-directory (as it all works under v. 1.01) yet for some reason the later versions don't pick up on these bmp's in that sub-directory. And, BTW- there is no alternate BMP sub-directory with the old bmp's in it so I'm at a loss to understand how the defaults are getting loaded unless they're direct from the CD. Oh, & just one more thing, it seems the same thing is happenning with the sound files as well since all I get is the default sounds under 1.03 & 1.05 yet playing 1.01 allows me to enjoy the sound mods I've downloaded into the WAV sub-directory. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jim R.

 8. Since we're all talking about the Rugged Defense tournament, I'd be interested to hear from others how they reckon the Poms stand up against the Germans with the parameters that have been set. My gut feel is that with the limited choice of equipment & infantry the British have & the specialisation of their armour (ie ONLY H.E. or A.T. rounds) that the Poms would be lucky to win 25% of the engagements if that. Anybody else have any thoughts on this subject? Regards Jim R.

 10.
quote:
Originally posted by CavScout: While it is true the U.S. was leaning more on Germany it didn't give Japan a breather. Hell, the U.S. basically was ONLY fighting the Japanese for much of 1942. Coral Sea, Midway, Eastern Solomons, and Santa Cruz all come to mind as a few of the battle we fought that year. One can argue that by '43 it was clear that Japan could not win the war. Cav [This message has been edited by CavScout (edited 09-14-2000).]

I'm sorry, I can't let that one go. I believe Australia & N.Z. were doing their fair share of the fighting against Japan in 1942 from my recollection. In fact it was the Aussies at Milne Bay which inflicted the first decent defeat on the Japs back in '42. Sorry, but we here in Australia kind of get sick of the old "McArthur" attitude that it was only the red white & blue that fought in the Pacific theatre. Regards Jim R.

 12. Please tell me I'm imagining this but is it anyone else's experience that Churchill tanks seem to suffer an exorbitant number of gun hits thereby rendering them useless. Was there a design flaw with their guns or something? Weak gun mantles perhaps? The reason for my query is that just about every time I chose a Churchill it almost inevitably suffers from a gun hit often early on in the piece. Is it because of its largish turret perhaps? I really dont know & would appreciate other gamers thoughts on the subject. BTW, I did a search but the only word that produced a response was "Churchill" by itself & as you can imagine I wasn't prepared to plough through 200+ topics to try & find a similar thread. Regards Jim R.

 15. OK, then it must be Naked Mole Rat season then. Mind you, it must be a fairly limited season as I've never seen them round these parts & so I guess they must be getting near to extinct. 20. I think this topic is important enough to bump it up, hoping BTS will take notice. Regards Jim R.
 21. I third it. Can be more than just a tad annoying when your troops run screaming towards the nearest flimsy copse of scattered trees when they were in perfectly good foxholes located on the reverse of a slope & hence, in most experts minds, in pretty darn good cover. Just shamelessly trying to get this topic to catch BTS's eyes. Regards Jim R.
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Sirocco: Well, he predicted the PzKpfw IV would advance on the left of the M10, and lo! it did. I can't understand the argument that because it didn't politely step on the exact spot predicted that the M10 should hold fire. The PzKpfw was a threat, and a mortal threat when it opened fire. When judging these things, it's tempting to bend logic to fit an otherwise excellent game engine, but looking at it from the battlefield itself, what would your reaction have been if you had been the commander of that M10..? "Holy ****! Fire!"

Thanks guys for all your considered responses to my initial "gripe" (although I hope I didn't come across as a whiner). Personally, I think that Sirocco sums up my thoughts exactly. Perhaps I did make a mistake by using the ambush marker to rotate the turret but there was a good reason to have the tank still facing forward, so it could back out of there in a hurry if need be rather than delay in first rotating to then back out (there was a forest just to the right rear of the tank). As Sirocco so succinctly put it, in real life, sure the PzIVh may get the first shot in, but once the M10 crew sees & hears a 75mm shell whistling past its turret surely the crew would disobey my possibly poor use of the ambush order & immediately adopt a self preservation mode & at least fire back rather than act like a "roo caught in the headlights of a car", as we like to describe it here in Australia. Regards Jim R.

 24. I'm wondering whether anybody else has experienced this. I set up a game with my unbuttoned M10 hiding behind a hill so it can't get taken out front on (ie behind the hill) but has a line of sight to the left hand edge of the map. To ensure his turret is facing the likely threat axis I set an ambush marker at maximum distance of 300 metres to its left. Sure enough, a PzIVh rocks up some 400 metres or so away virtually directly behind the ambush marker & proceeds to target my M10. Guess what happens next...the PzIVh fires off 3 shots at the M10 with the third one striking it & destroying it without ANY return fire from the M10. This struck me as rather weird as the M10's turret was facing directly towards the PzIVh & yet it just sat there & took it as if completely oblivious to what was going on. Has anyone experienced something similar & if so, what was I doing wrong? If I hadn't set the ambush (which I always thought was an advantage to the "setter") then my turret wouldn't have been facing the threat axis. Any thoughts? Regards Jim R.
