  1. Don't waste your points on high end purchases. They rarely perform to the level of their cost, and die just as easily as a lower level purchase. You also get fewer assets to work with when you splurge on the expensive (and more often than not unrealistic) toys. For instance, a crack platoon of standard US M4A3 in July '44 cost 872 points. Add a regular rifle platoon (gotta have some infantry) and the cost shoots to 1016 points. Now buy the same tank platoon only at a regular experience level. Add 2 each of rifle '44 platoons, 60mm mortars teams and 5-man M1919 MMG teams. Cost = 1011 points. -or- Buy individual tanks and mix the types to get the best of both worlds. For instance, buy 2 reg M4A3 and 2 with the extra armor and 76mm gun. Keep the 2 rifle platoons. Drop one of each of the mortar and MMG teams (but raise the experience level of the remaining two to vets) and toss in a couple of BARs. Cost = 1017 points. You can handle more situations and survive more engagements with the second and third options than you would with the first.
  2. The problem you are experiencing is common with CMBO, and still exists to a somewhat lesser extent in CMBB and CMAK. Basically the computer is programmed to draw the new demarcation line direcly across the map in as straight a line as possible. This new divide is determined by two factors - the location of the farthest advanced unit from the attacking side, and what distance is chosen for the 'no man's land' setting. This results in situations such as the one you encountered. In the Carentan Op the no man's land distance is set at 160 meters. This means that you could have advanced (assuming you are the Americans) up to but not over the bridges by the end of one of the battles, and when the next battle begins that 160 meter divide has now shifted the new demarcation line well past the bridges, allowing you to cross unopposed without a fight.

  4. What would a lone 'bolt be doing at that altitude deep inside 21st AG's AOP, over a battle already fough out? Granted, I know the USAF and RAF both flew over each other's zones when needed - the Typhoons over Mortain being a good example - but the pic does not suggest it is a bombing run by a 'bolt. What the pic does suggest is a low level photo run by a spit, which IIRC was used for aerial recon. Aerial recon grog - was it common practice for photo runs to employ two planes, one high and one low?
  5. This number seems low, IMO. I would think that the losses incurred from Perch and Epsom combined would account for those 146, if not more. On top of that you have the losses at Le Mesnil Paltry, around Buron and of course the landings.
  6. Much abliged. It is interesting to see that the ratio went from almost 4:1 to less than 3:1 in the span of two weeks. AIUI, the Commonwealth maintained a 4:1 ratio of 75/Fireflies in their tank platoons until much later in the war. Was it that much harder to get sufficient 'flys, or are my numbers wrong?
  7. Looking for info on what versions of medium tanks were in the US 3rd Armored division during the first weeks of August '44. What was the ratio of 75mm to 76mm equipped tanks at this time? Were the assault gun companies already equipped with the M4/105 or M8 HMC? I know that CMAK overrepresents the Rhino-equipped vehicles, but how about those with wet storage or added armor?
  8. IMO, there is no better method of scoring a tournament than the NABLA system. I should add that I am referring to the complete NABLA system, which included the computer program designed by Jarmo Hurri a.k.a "Nabla". The modified version I adopted midway thru ROW III (or was it IV?) and used from then on was discovered to have some flaws in it, a fact I'll be the first to admit.

  10. Which CMBO scenarios are you interested in? I've converted close to two dozen so far.
  11. There may be a slight gain in concealment, but that is offset in a big way by the added vunerability of treebursts. Better to put the trench behind the tree line.

  13. Jason, Thanks for the info. Quick question: Are you sure about this? I've seen several references that state the 1st SS Panthers stayed with Kuhlman (since he was commander of this battalion anyway) and were commited along the St.Barthelemy-La Rossaye-La Vallee-Juvigny axis.
  14. For Op Luttich the 2nd Panzer division was divided into 2 seperate KGs, with the northern one advancing via the St. Barthelemy-Belle Fontaine-Le Mesnil-Tove axis. Does anyone know what the OOB of this KG? I know that the 1st SS Reconnaisance battalion under Gustav Knittel was part of it, and because of this it was sometimes referred to as KG Knittel, although I'm not entirely sure he was in overall command.

  18. You'll need Pyewacket's map converter program. Do a search in the scenario forum under "Pyewacket" or "map converter". Make sure to download version 1.29. Once downloaded follow these steps: -Fire up CMAK and either CMBO or CMBB (your choice, but they all must be the latest versions) -Open the CMAK Op in the editor. Go to the map section and drag the cursor over the 2-D map. Minimize the page to desktop. -Repeat the same procedure with the other CM game. Again, make sure the cursor is over the 2-D map before you minimize the screen to desktop -Fire up the map converter program -Click on "Read CMAK v1.03". Wait until you get the message that the data was successfully read. -Click on "write CMBO 1.12" (or CMBB 1.03 if this is the other game you chosen). Again, wait for confirmation it succesfully wrote the data to the other game. -Preview the other game's map to confirm it transferred over. -Now go back into CMAK and click on "new scenario". Open the map editor, and with the cursor over the 2-D map minimize the screen to desktop. -Enter the map converter program and repeat the above conversion steps but this time you will be 'Reading from CMBO' and 'Writing to CMAK'. -If all goes well you will have converted the Op's map to CMBO (or CMBB) and then back again. Once you convert a map it loses whatever parameters it had from the original version, and reverts to the default setting, both in size, time and battle type. You can now tweak the parameters to whatever you want. Keep in mind that in all versions of CM (CMBO,CMBB and CMAK) the Op maps limits are bigger than the respective scenarios, so you may lose some terrain if your Op was originally bigger than the largest map allowed for a scenairo. If for whatever reason it doesn't work send it to me and I'll convert it over for you.
  19. AI stands for Artifical intelligence, or as some might say artifical idiot. It's just a fancy way of saying the computer. Richie, I'll fire up my old PC to get the old ROW IV and V scenarios. I haven't tweaked 'Push', so if you happen to have a copy use that for the Pack.
  20. Richie designed Tiger Valley, Methode Champenois, St. Edwards, Across Moltke bridge and is also the custodian for St. Nazaire. Nidan1 designed Highlanders in Hell. I designed South of Vevi and Push to Maleme. The remaining scenarios were designed by people who no longer frequent these boards, so that makes me the de facto custodian of their scenarios. For the ones deisgned by Richie and Nidan1 I would suggest first looking in The Scenario Depot II. If you can't find it there, or want one of the others, then contact the designers directly. That way you are assured to get the most updated version. A bit of advice - don't waste them against the AI. Find a good, reliable opponent and have at it.

  22. Not if you take into account the angle at which these plates are set at. A CMAK M4A1 has the upper hull set to 51mm at 56 degrees from vertical. This works out to roughly 3.56", or about 90mm, when measured along a horizontal plane.
